SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (AP) – Ten Republican presidential candidates wanting to succeed President Bush embraced a more popular president, conservative icon Ronald Reagan, at every turn in their first debate of the 2008 race.
“Ronald Reagan was a president of strength,” Mitt Romney intoned. “Ronald Reagan used to say, we spend money like a drunken sailor,” said John McCain. And Rudy Giuliani praised “that Ronald Reagan optimism.”
And NONE of them have the character, charisma or personality Ronald Reagan had, all you can do is WISH to be what he was, and invoke his name in your pathetic little debate…
When the likes of John McCain even utter the name of President Regan, it’s disgusting, simply because McCain is about as far from being a Conservative as is humanly possible, hell, he’s not even a good Republican, for him to use the name of Mr. Reagan in any way designed to further his campaign is a travesty and Giuliani is as big a fake as has ever been foisted off on this nation if he expects anyone to consider him a Conservative, he’s about as much a real Conservative as McCain, both are a hell of a lot closer to being Dems than they are anything else…
One by one, they invoked Reagan 19 times. In contrast, Bush’s name was barely uttered; the president’s job approval rating languishes in the 30s.
And the reasons are quite obvious as to WHY they used Mr. Reagan’s name and not that of Pres. Bush, they want to be seen as being like Ronald Reagan, and I don’t blame them for that, most Repubs would be doing themselves a huge favor to place some distance between themselves and the current President, if they have any hope of winning an election that is, think about it, if you were a Repub running for POTUS, would YOU want your campaign to be associated with Bush and Co.??
Attempt to latch on to the Reagan legacy, yeah, that’s the ticket, except for one thing, there won’t be another Ronnie Reagan, he was one of a kind, and these guys pale in comparison to the greatest American of MY life time…
I know Mr. Reagan made mistakes, one being his move on the US/Mexico border thing back when, but at that particular time, the security of this nation wasn’t in such mortal danger as it is today, and the failure to secure our borders, by the current President, or any future president, is just totally unacceptable…
Republican operatives agreed that the debate did nothing to shake up the crowded GOP field.
I was terribly disappointed in my favorite, Tom Tancredo, I am beginning to feel like he’s a one trick pony, and unless there is some brilliance and diversity are shown, and very soon, I will be throwing my support to Fred Thompson, and I am seriously hoping he will declare soon, he may well be the best hope, perhaps the only hope, that Conservatives have today…
In my opinion, if Thompson is willing to run, I honestly believe that Tancredo or Duncan Hunter would make a fine choice as VP, but, we’re all hanging in limbo waiting for Thompson to declare, and hoping he does…

GOP Contenders Embrace Reagan Legacy

What makes me even more angry is when the “Bush Bots” use his name.
Reagan would’nt have anything to do with these “Proctologists for Bush” and more important, Reagan would not have been a Bush supporter.
Fred Thompson or someone like him is our only chance.
God help us if these “BOZO’s” are all we have.
Fred, you should think about backing Chuck Hagel. He sounds a lot like you – solid conservative but breaks with Bush on Iraq. This is making him anathema to GOP loyalists so he may run as an Independent.
If he runs as an Indy, he might be a hell of a deal breaker all around…
My one SERIOUS hangup with Tancredo is that when asked about his plans to run he was asked if there was a chance that he would run Indy if he couldn’t get the RNC nomination, and he said, in no uncertain terms, NO, he would NEVER run as an Indy…
Hell, I have no affiliation to ANY party, for that very reason, I will take a look at Hagel but for now I still feel the most electable one hasn’t made it formal yet…
Looks like the media wants a Guliani-Hillary match-up.
God help us all.
I’m thinking you may be correct, and BOTH are a disaster for this nation…
I see Hillary being elected POTUS and the ‘Stealth Muzzie’ will be the VP. Doesn’t matter who the Repub’s run they aren’t going to win. Many people including myself thing the Repub’s had their chance and shot themselves in the foot over and over again. I’m thinking I won’t vote for anyone for POTUS as I don’t see anyone I like and I’m not voting for Dem-Lite ever again like I did with Bush.
WRT the Reagan name-dropping, I thought Hunter was convincing and credible on national security and the larger war on terror, bringing to mind Reagan’s steadfast commitment to winning the Cold War. The big three could take this to heart: it’s not necessary to mention Reagan constantly if you can successfully embody conservative principles.
WRT the Reagan name-dropping??
What is WRT??
None of these guys will be elected.
Everyone stood by Bush on Iraq, that’s their “Nail in their Coffins.”
Over 60% of the American people have lost faith in Bush’s War in Iraq, do the math.
All one of them would have had to say is that they would send 300,000 more troops, remove their gloves and wrap up this “Cluster Fuck” in about a month, it didn’t happen.
They’re wasting their time and money.
You may very well be correct, but on THIS site, no link, no credibility, Thompson has, or is on, several sites, and for this to be a credible fact, you need to link it to be taken seriously, otherwise, it’s just more BS, and I am not doing the footwork FOR you…
WRT = with regard to.
I already sussed out Tancredo’s “One Trick Pony” nature in my post here. I also wrote about Thompson in Saturday’s post. Overall, I am becoming quite less impressed with the GOP potentials. Certainly we’ll not get “everything” in one package but the packages presented were not what I envisioned. Giuliani, whom I had hoped to come out strong and explain himself fully, looked weak.
