Girl Dies After Parents Pray Instead of Seeking Help

WESTON, Wis. - An 11-year-old girl died after her parents prayed for healing rather than seek medical help for a treatable form of diabetes, police said Tuesday.

Everest Metro Police Chief Dan Vergin said Madeline Neumann died Sunday.

“She got sicker and sicker until she was dead,” he said.

Vergin said an autopsy determined the girl died from diabetic ketoacidosis, an ailment that left her with too little insulin in her body, and she had probably been ill for about 30 days, suffering symptoms like nausea, vomiting, excessive thirst, loss of appetite and weakness.

The girl’s parents, Dale and Leilani Neumann, attributed the death to “apparently they didn’t have enough faith,” the police chief said.

They believed the key to healing “was it was better to keep praying. Call more people to help pray,” he said.

The mother believes the girl could still be resurrected, the police chief said.

It’s people like this that give Christians a bad name.

Moonbats come in all shapes and sizes, all colors and religious denominations but these people take the cake, the kid is DEAD.

Her folks say it’s because THEY didn’t pray hard enough?? And the mother believes that the girl could still be resurrected??

These people need to be charged with neglect of a child and voluntary manslaughter at the very least.

Before anyone gets all up in the air and starts throwing out accusations saying I am against prayer and Christians, you need to read a bit further, I’m not knocking prayer, if that’s your thing, great, I’m all for you, I know that 3 weeks ago, when I was so sick, I had a lot of great folks saying a lot of prayers for me, and that’s a wonderful thing, but if I had relied on nothing but prayer, I’d be dead right now.

I was, according to my doctors, about 2 days from complete insulin depletion, I too was suffering from diabetic ketoacidosis, that was the exact diagnosis my doctors made, all along I thought I had the flu, but it wasn’t the flu, and I got to the point where I was so sick that my wife adamantly insisted that I was going to the hospital, even if she had to call 9-1-1 and get police and fire help to make it happen.

I gave in and went, still thinking it was the flu, and I was pretty surprised 3 days later when they got my sugars and some other stuff under control and told me how close I had come to dying.

And again, I am not denigrating the power of prayer, but had it not been for the skill and knowledge of my doctors, I would have been gone, just like this child, but I was physically that far down because I was too hard headed to listen to sound reasoning, Madeline Neumann had no choice in the matter, she was at the mercy of some idiots that were relying on nothing other than faith healing, and I suppose full faith healing is possible, I have heard the stories.

I know a couple of folks that claim to have had a full faith healing, be that as it may, to do nothing other than to rely on that faith healing exclusively, and to allow that child to die, in terrible pain, is nothing less than a travesty, believe me when I say, diabetic ketoacidosis is painful, just look at the symptoms, nausea, vomiting, excessive thirst, loss of appetite and weakness, that was how I lost 63 pounds in 2 weeks, and I am still not back to 100% even now, but for me, things are looking up.

If these people had used some common sense and sought medical care for Madeline, in conjunction WITH prayer, odds are they’d still have their little girl today.

This is so sad. I really do not understand the rationale of some people. Folks, we are not living in the time of miracles. Those days ended two thousand years ago. There is absolutely no basis for any Christian to forgo medical care unless your doctor is an insane nut. Prayer is wonderful, but medicine is better. Jesus accepted the medical practices of his day. Remember, that one of his Apostles was Luke, who was a physician.

These people have no understanding of faith in God. Didn’t God make doctors too? Isn’t it the job of doctors to learn about God’s creation to keep us well? Doesn’t it make sense to believe that? By all means, keep praying — but use God’s servants as well!

I put a lot credence in prayer, but ya know, God also gave us brains to use, which in turn came up with researchers who discovered that insulin injections and such could actually fix a problem. Doctors + prayer can do miracles. Sometimes prayer alone can work, depending on the problem, but it should have been obvious to even the most ignorant observer (the parents) that she needed more help than what they giving her.

Yes, these types certainly do give Christians a bad name!

I am not a Christian..I am Deist…but I believe in the power of prayer…I am not sure if it is the combined power of a lot of minds thinking alike or the will of a deity..or is it coincidence? But there is too much unexplained by science to discount the power of prayer.

However, I also believe that the creator gave us a defense mechanism that she did not give to the rest of the animal world..and that is a creative brain. And to have a sick kid and use prayer as a sole treatment when medical advise/help is available is not exactly what the creator had in mind…LOCK ‘EM UP! And see if they can pray their way out of the slammer.

Maybe these parents just Pissed God off or better yet, maybe he’s just sick of all the Bulls**t prayers people keep throwing at him.

Don’t people realize that he’s a little busy right now.

These parents should be charged with murder.

Great comments folks, and BTW, God’s name will NOT be hyphenated here…

I don’t know if God is male, female, a deity or what but if ya can’t spell the word God out for some reason, don’t USE the word God here please…

I personally find it very offensive…

It’s documented throughout the New Testament Epistles that the Apostle Paul had some type of infirmity. Now, next to Jesus Christ, Paul was the greatest healer in the New Testament but he couldn’t heal himself. He had Luke, a physician, travel with him on many occasions as documented in the Books of Colossians and 2 Timothy. The Apostle Paul also instructed one of the disciples, Timothy, to drink wine instead of water for his stomach problems.

Methinks the doctors would have saved her without anybody praying at all, if only they had been given the chance.

Science will outrank superstition any day of the week.

And if there was a god, this sort of thing wouldn’t happen.

  9. Kate says:

Fred, I hyphenate for personal reasons.

  10. TexasFred says:

Kate, I understand your reasoning, and that’s fine, but please don’t do it here, I am PROUD to say the name of GOD and I do find it quite offensive when it’s done the way you did it..

Please, if you use the word GOD here, spell it out?? It’s a personal thing for me too…

My son is 22 and has had type 1 diabetes since he was 7. the poor girl. her parents are insane…that is the beginning and the end of it. if they truly loved her they would have taken her to the doctor. i would do anything to make sure my son stays well. anything….but first and foremost i know how to dial 911 and i know where is doctor is.

i really just don’t get it. if she was run over by a car and her legs were broken would they have prayed for her while she screamed out in pain?

she was probably so listless she couldn’t even talk. i’m not religious but i truly hope for her and all other victims that she is somewhere far superior with people around her that really do care.

    may she rest in peace

I can personally say that Diabetic Ketoacidosis is one of the scariest things I have ever seen in my life. You see, about 3 weeks ago my husband, big sister, and I headed straight for Dallas to meet my twin sister and older brother. They had gone to visit my dad and step mom. My dad, was very sick and we could not figure out why. We assumed it was the flu. He would not eat anything except a little grape fruit here and there, and he was drinking about 36-42 ounces of water an hour. He was so weak that it was hard for him to sit up and tell us what he was feeling.

Hoping Dad would get better, we all headed back to south Louisiana where we all live. We all had jobs and kids to tend too. The next day, my step mom calls us and lets us know that Dad has been admitted into the hospital. It was bad enough he was in critical condition, and he did have to stay in ICU. Believe it or not, my dad is a diabetic. Normally, everything is pretty good, until, he developed Diabetic Ketoacidosis. When the doctor’s informed our family that we almost lost our dad, it was pretty hard to take. Thankfully, the doctor’s knew how to treat our dad so that he could get better.

My brother, sisters, husband, and myself are all church going, strong faith Christians who pray, ALOT. I believe that God is still in the miracle business, but I also believe that he doesn’t want people to be foolish. I believe God has graced this the world with brilliant minds in order to save lives and help people.

Maybe the miracle those parents were waiting for was in the head of some man or woman in a white lab coat….

:) Understood, and I’ll do m’best! I might slip up a time or two, but maybe I can use something different….like LORD! :) I can do that!

  14. kat says:

I can’t believe that these parents watched their child suffer and did nothing. I would do anything in my power to get my child what they needed. God gave us free will and brains to be able to take our child to the health professionals when they need to go. Where were they when god handed out common sense?

  15. TexasFred says:

Thanks Kate, and regardless of what ANYONE says, you really are a great Ol’ Broad… 😀
