McCain taps Alaska Gov. Palin as vice president pick

(CNN) — Sen. John McCain on Friday announced Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his vice presidential candidate, calling her “the running mate who can best help me shake up Washington.”

“She’s exactly who this country needs to help me fight the same old Washington politics of me first and country second,” the presumptive Republican nominee said at a Dayton, Ohio, rally of about 15,000 supporters, who welcomed the surprise pick of the relatively unknown politician with cheers and flags.

“She’s got the grit, integrity, good sense and fierce devotion to the common good that is exactly what we need in Washington today,” McCain said.

Palin, 44, told the crowd, “To have been chosen brings a great challenge. I know that it will demand the best that I have to give and I promise nothing less.”

Palin is a first-term governor who unseated incumbent Gov. Frank Murkowski in the Republican primary in 2006 and went on to defeat former Gov. Tony Knowles, a Democrat, in the general election.

She will be the first woman to be nominated for vice president as a Republican and only the second to run for vice president on a major party ticket, after Democrat Geraldine Ferraro in 1984.

Palin also will be the first Alaskan to be on the ticket for either party.

McCain taps Alaska Gov. Palin as vice president pick

I have NOT made ANY secret of the fact that I am not terribly enthusiastic about John McCain becoming the President of the USA.

Be that as it may, I am absolutely convinced that there is NO WAY the American people can allow Obama and O’Biden to take the Oval Office. It is just not an acceptable scenario, not in any way, shape, form or fashion.

That said, today John McCain made a decision that brought his stock up greatly in my estimation. Today John McCain announced that Sarah Palin of Alaska is going to be his running mate in his quest for the presidency.

Sarah Palin is a great choice in my opinion, and one that makes McCain a much more desirable choice for the office of POTUS. Palin brings style and grace into this race. She is a very smart and politically savvy candidate, she is Pro Life, Pro ANWR drilling, Pro Gun owners rights and she is a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.

It is with great relief that I say, I can now honestly support a McCain for President ticket. The addition of Sarah Palin to this ticket makes it what I believe to be an unbeatable combination!

Good Lord how I wish I could vote in your election (being Canadian, not possible). Sarah Palin is a great choice for VP. A truly gracious and amazing woman. Here’s to knocking it out the park for the Cons. (and here’s to hoping we Canadians get a Con MAJORITY in our election this fall as well - time to get North America back on track!!!)
Know your fellow Conservative Canadians are with you all in spirit since we can’t be on paper (or electronic vote - however it is you guys do it :)

I’m glad you feel this way. I wasn’t going to argue you with you about the McCain thing because I understand, but I think it is critically important to defeat the Obomination.

Syd, she was about the ONLY thing that was going to stop me from writing in Tancredo and Hunter… Any of the rest were nothing more than jokes… Timmy Pawlenty?? We’re not ready for a POTUS named Timmy…

Palin is THE right choice and she will bring MANY votes to McCain, and she balances him out quite well…

I still have very little use for McCain himself, I still feel he changed HIS views to fit a winning ticket, but Palin is the REAL DEAL and I honestly believe that if she has 1 year or more to learn this job before anything, God forbid, happens to McCain, I think she would be an outstanding leader…

    Kate, I’m hardheaded, NOT stupid…

She impresses me more than McCain…..not that it would take much…but still.
I want to hear what she thinks of Flipper John’s Amnesty First plan.

Bluto, I am afraid that amnesty, in one form or another, is something that we’re going to be stuck with…

At least until such time as the *man on the street* finds his BALLS and takes matters unto himself…

    Stuck with amnesty….damn.

    *sighs*

Excuse me while I run out and stock up on my graffiti clean-up supplies.

I find that to be a very savvy choice, on any number of tactical, political and personal levels. We don’t have to fight, we just have to unite to ENSURE that Barack Hussein Obama NEVER inhabits the White House.

With her, I could vote for the ticket…not McCain, the ticket.

I’ve read up on her a couple months ago and have been very impressed.

BobF, that is exactly my view on it… And I don’t really have to hold my nose to do it either…

This choice turned the tide for me too, Fred. It was easy for me to say I would take McCain over Obama, but I wasn’t going to open my checkbook or leave myself open to disappointment until today. You used the key word: unbeatable. I believe it, and thats a great part of it, but the more I learn about Sarah Palin and what she stands for… well, I’m feeling truly enthused about the coming election for the first time since the GOP primaries.

Hockey mom’s just may be tougher than Texas football moms…not sure if I’d want to take either one on….

    Bye bye Biden.

I agree Fred. McCain was not my first, second or third choice. I am not even sure he would have been in my top ten.

That being said, the choice of Palin has impressed and inspired me. Not because she is a woman BUT because she is a conservative.
