Ecuador has new constitution; opposition worried

QUITO, Ecuador (AP) - Ecuador’s leftist President Rafael Correa urged his opponents Monday to join his efforts to build a more just society, saying the overwhelming victory of his constitutional referendum gives him a broad mandate.

“Thank God my triumph was so convincing and so crushing, beyond all our expectations,” he told international reporters at a breakfast. “Let’s hope they reflect and let the country advance peacefully.”

With 90 percent of ballots counted, 64 percent of Ecuadorean voters approved the measure, according to official results. Correa got the majority he needed in all but two of Ecuador’s 24 provinces.

The 20th constitution in the history of this chronically unstable nation considerably broadens Correa’s powers and will let him run for two more consecutive terms, consolidating what he calls a citizen’s revolution.

They have had 20 constitutions in their history? Wow, sounds like someone in Ecuador has even less respect for their constitution than some in American government have for ours.

Now I know that many say it never happened but rumors still float that George W. Bush himself threw a tantrum when constitutional law was presented to him and supposedly said, ‘ it’s just a goddamned piece of paper’.

Now I can’t confirm or deny this as true and factual, I wasn’t there, but there appears to have been at least 3 sources that came forth and another that heard it but for his own reasons decided to not become involved. I don’t care if it was said, Bush is very close to being a chapter of American history that we can close, what I care about is NOW.

Rafael Correa, Ecuador’s president said, “I’m only here to serve my homeland. I’m not interested in power,” and that is somewhat reminiscent of the blather we are hearing today, look at todays congressional vote on the bailout, and that’s not over yet.

Look at this article, Backlash to Obama officials squelching political speech, free speech is being quashed in THIS nation, we are on the verge of becoming exactly what the nation of Ecuador is, a leftist nation with a socialist dictator in charge, and if anyone thinks the Bush gaffe of ‘ it’s just a goddamned piece of paper’ was a bit over the top, just wait until the Obamessiah gets into the Oval Office, the constitution as we know it will cease to exist and the Brownshirt Truth Squads will run free in this nation, and they will quite likely be the only thing free.

Obama claims he only wants what’s best for America, but I believe him to be nothing more than a LIAR of the 1st order, Obama wants what’s best for Obama, and if you look at leaders like Correa, Chavez and Castro, you’ll have a glimpse into America under Obama.

  1. Katie says:

I wonder how many Constitutions we will have if Obama is elected. I can’t see him ever leaving power, can you?

  2. Sam Pierce says:

Just this weekend I saw where Hugo Chavez blamed capitalism for our financial problems and suggested that The United States needed a new constitution. I immediately thought, Barack Obama!

  3. StormWarning says:

Katie’s comment has to be “tongue in cheek.” In the worst case, we will have a one term President regardless of who wins. Can anyone really imagine Obama winning “re-election” if he does beat McCain?

Regardless (second time using that word), there will not be a new Constitution, even if McCain loses. Yes, I’m sure of that.

  4. Right Truth says:

“They have had 20 constitutions in their history?” That can only lead to chaos. The US having another constitution? No I don’t think that’s going to happen. However, there have been rumblings that a new constitution would be desirable to some on the far left. But it will never happen.

  5. TexasFred says:

Storm and Right Truth?? Are you willing to vote for Obama?? And bet your life on that statement??

Because betting your life is exactly what ANYONE that supports Obama is doing, your life and that of the millions of Americans that will go to armed revolt to stop this type of thing from happening, if it were to happen that is…

  6. Longstreet says:

I’m with Katie on this. The most serious danger we face with the Socialist in charge of the executive and legislative branches of the US government is… they will have the power to ram thru laws, regulations with the force of law, and “rules” that will secure their hold on the government of the US as far as the eye can see.

Example, they are in charge of the legislative branch right now… and here we have the entire financial system of the US in turmoil… just thirty some odd days before an election in which their candidate was in trouble. Does anyone REALLY believe this financial problem just HAPPENED to pop-up when it did?

  7. Carl Andrews says:

Barry may indeed prove to be a one-termer, but I shudder to think of the damage he will do to this country during his term in office.

  8. TexasFred says:

Carl, I can’t believe the number of highly intelligent bloggers that read this and fail to see where the son of a buck loving bitch wouldn’t try to suspend the constitution…

For crying out loud people, look at Missouri, and the BS going on there, right now..

And he’s not even POTUS yet…

  9. StormWarning says:

But Fred, I’m not voting for Obama, and even still, I don’t believe that there will be any dramatic changes, despite the promise of “change.” So for the “bet your life” aspect of your question, in your opinion, how would the Constitution change if Obama actually beats McCain (or is that really if McCain actually loses to Obama?).

  10. TexasFred says:

How would, or COULD the constitution change?? Did you read the story?? I thought I spelled it out rather well, especially the Missouri part what with the link to the shit his people are pulling in Missouri and all, and him NOT the POTUS, I think it’s a sample of what we have in store…

If you don’t good, maybe I’m just basing my opinions on what he’s done so far…

Doesn’t make a damn to me, I have lots of precious metals and know how to use them very well…

  11. StormWarning says:

Yes I read all of the articles and links. Freedom of speech won’t be changed, Missouri notwithstanding. There are plenty of people who would argue that Scalia etal already changed or interpreted the Constitution. There are plenty of people who would argue that the Patriot Act changed the Constitution. I disagree, that’s all. A simple disagreement.

  12. TexasFred says:

I understand it’s just a disagreement, I simply feel you’re underestimating the inherent evil that IS Obama… I truly fear that his evil knows no bounds…

  13. BobF says:

Obama already believes that communities can amend the 2nd Amendment to implement “sensible” gun laws. Laws like Chicago, Washington DC, NY City; laws that basically ban gun ownership. With the current Democrat controlled congress behind him and RINO’s too, they can appoint Federal Judges and enact laws which will circumvent the Constitution.

In Missouri you already have Obama supporters using the power of their offices to determine what is and isn’t truth. When City Attorneys and a Sheriff say in their official capacity that they’re going after those who spread “lies” about Obama, then you have circumvented the Constitution. These are government officials determining what your First Amendment Rights are and we haven’t heard a peep from the Obama camp condemning this.
