Ohio executes man who argued he was too fat to die
LUCASVILLE, Ohio (AP) – Ohio executed a 5-foot-7, 267-pound double murderer on Tuesday who argued his obesity made death by lethal injection inhumane.
Richard Cooey, 41, died at 10:28 a.m. at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville, said Jim Gravelle, a spokesman with state attorney general’s office.
There were no immediate reports of difficulties finding suitable veins to deliver the deadly chemicals, a problem that has delayed previous executions in the state.
Cooey’s attorneys had argued that his weight problem would make it difficult for prison staff to access a vein. A prisons spokeswoman said Cooey received a pre-execution exam early Tuesday and was cleared.
He walked into the death chamber at 10:15 a.m. wearing gray pants and was strapped onto the gurney.
“You (expletive) haven’t paid any attention to anything I’ve said in the last 22 1/2 years, why would anyone pay any attention to anything I’ve had to say now,” Cooey said looking at the ceiling. He made no other comment.

Ohio executes man who argued he was too fat to die
There is only one thing wrong with this story, Richard Cooey wasn’t executed 20+ years ago.
The idea of not being able to find a vein is just pure BS, I am a pretty good sized guy and I can tell you right now, it is really easy to hit a vein if you have a *blood tech* that knows what they are doing. I went to my endocrinology doctor yesterday and had to have an A1C run. Piece of cake, 1 tech, 2 chairs, no waiting…
Cooey may have been big, he may have been fat, but he quite likely was a coward, afraid of death, not man enough to accept the responsibility of his actions and willing to pay the ultimate price, but Richard Cooey got off easy.
He spent the last 22 years sitting on his ass in prison, free food, free housing, free medical, he didn’t have to go to work every day, he had NO responsibilities, NONE…
All he did was waste GOOD air, eat too much and gain weight on prison food and die a quiet and peaceful death. I wonder, were his victims allowed that luxury? I sincerely hope that Richard Cooey is presently enjoying his first day in HELL!

I think 230 grains of full metal jacket will find a vein real easy in this SOB.
You’re absolutely right in that it took 20 years too long to carry out the sentence.
I’m with BobF. I’ve always considered the “$4.75 Solution” (that is, if you want a really nice boattail .308, for that “extra little something”) to be the most expedient and the cheapest.
BZ
Bob… Seriously man… C’mon…
A 230gr FMJ?? How *yesterday*…
Remington has a 230gr Golden Saber Hollow Point now, better ballistics than the old ball ammo, chambers like a dream and it rolls over to about .750 during impact and penetration…
Yes, I really AM that evil! I’m loaded with it now! High Capacity mags and all!
You said up there Fred how the hell did this truckload of killer lard get so fat in prison to begin with is my question, medical condition or not.
Stop feeding the fat ass shoulda been the focus of any lawsuits, taking food away from a half a cell block to feed a death row inmate. And this is only gonna get worse if ChicagoBroBama makes it to the soon to be named something else house since white house is racist.
Good hemp + long fall + fat ass = decapitation. I’d like to see that. Of course I’m a committed sadist.
Fred, I always liked the Federal Hydra-shock round. I figured on going with the hardball to make sure it penetrated.
I’ve never tried the Golden Saber round but I’ve read some good things about it.
The 308 that BZ recommended will defiantly get the job done in the most expedient way.
I have 3 neighbors that shoot Springfield XD-45′s, 2 of them swear by the Federal Hydra-Shock rounds, 2 of us shoot the Remington Golden Sabers…
Not a thing in this world wrong with either round in my opinion, I prefer the Golden Saber simply because it’s what my Son carries, all of his Department carry the Golden Saber rounds…
And the venerable old 230gr hardball is still a hell of a round, I have those in the inventory as well…
Basti, you forgot to mention, some assembly required…
And with decapitation there is a lot less dis-assembly too…
The best recommendation for any particular round is what a police department carries, especially if they don’t have a PC chief. Cops will use what they know will save their lives. I’m glad to see more departments going to the 45 and even the 40 and away from the 9mm.
My closest friend, the one who got me into shooting, used to do some loading for a Detroit area police department. He loaded them Hydra-shock rounds but at an almost +P velocity. They wanted something a little more “juiced” than factory. He gave me a couple boxes but I haven’t shot any. I’m saving those in case the stinky stuff hits the overhead air recirculating device.
Can’t find a vein..? Bovine feces! I could get a line in him I bet! That failing, I also would, for a small fee, just empty my Glock 10mm auto into his ass, saving the last round as the killer. And yes, I shoot Hydra Shoks…
240 grain hollow points from a my Ruger .44 always do the job. I’m not partial to brand.
Fred,
I prefer a few good 6.8s in first, the legs, them arms, stomach, and after a good 30 minutes, the head. Only trouble is the clean up though, lol.
Speaking of guns, I don’t remember if I posted this but check this out.

BobF, we LOVE Boston Legal, I was cheering when Denny nailed that bastard… In Texas it wouldn’t have been knee and foot though…
Amen!
You are so right, he sat on death row for 20 years and wanted to complain now about how fat he’d gotten eaten FREE prison food. Not paying taxes, not having a care or responsibility in the world.
That just pisses me off and I don’t understand why they have people sit on death row for so long.
Dude got down to the last few days of a somewhat enjoyable life, and was scared of dying, and paying for his crimes.
Total bullshit. No sympathy here.
