CHICAGO (AP) - The head of the nation’s second-largest police department says he is establishing a new unit to deal with gang slayings, which he blames for a murder rate that eclipses that of New York and Los Angeles.
Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis told aldermen Friday that he was setting up the Mobile Strike Force to attack the city’s gangs. The unit will be comprised of roughly 150 veteran officers divided into about a dozen teams and will “disrupt gang crimes through physical arrests, search warrants and gun seizures,” Weis said.
He said there were 75 identified gangs in the city and 75,000 gang members.
“The gang culture continues to be the driving force behind the vast majority of violence, with more than half the murders committed by gangs,” he said.
Weis said the department will focus on gathering intelligence and moving quickly to put police officers in neighborhoods with the most drug dealing and violent gang activity.

Gangs and Chicago. Chicago and gangs. Seems like a never ending cycle doesn’t it? Going back to the early part of the 20th century, and likely even further back than that.
Al Capone was Chicago’s most infamous gangster, Big Al was the predecessor to this whole thing, the founder of the feast so to speak. Capone wrote the book on gang activity in Chicago, how to do it, how to make it happen, how to get by with it, the whole thing, and the root of the matter is corrupt politicians, corrupt police officials and money!
The gangs CAN be stopped, but it won’t happen, not fully, until the upper echelon of corruption is removed, the protectorate, the politicians and police brass that take massive payoffs to look the other way. And yes, it DOES happen, just like that. It’s the Chicago way!
Officers have said they are concerned that Weis and his administration do not support them.
Weis said Friday that he’s trying to assure officers “that we have their backs.”
I happen to have known some Chicago officers over the years, what they are afraid of is this, Weis DOES have their back, and they are afraid that there may be a dagger in his hand. Much like our Police Chief here in Dallas, there is an attitude of Political Correctness in place, the bad guys have more rights than the citizens, and the cops are going to be blamed for ANY action, no matter how it turns out, regardless of the circumstances, the COPS will be wrong and the Department will crucify them for it. Couple that with the perceived notion of corrupt officials in Chicago and you have a recipe for disaster.
I can tell you exactly how to rid your city of gangs, it’s not PC, it’s probably too brutal for the bleeding hearts at the ACLU and I am sure that the NAACP would have a coronary, but here it is, a line from the movie The Untouchables, just substitute the word GANGS for the word Capone and there ya go, the perfect solution.
You wanna know how to get Capone? They pull a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue. *That’s* the *Chicago* way! And that’s how you get Capone.
And that folks, is exactly how it needs to be applied in ALL U.S. cities, with one exception, if they send one of yours to the hospital, you send 10 of theirs to the morgue. That’s the TexasFred way!

I’d join up with that posse in a heartbeat buddy.
Like it says in one of my favorite songs:
“Send ‘em all to their maker, and he’ll set ‘em down.”
Gracious sakes Fred. You mean to tell me you prefer the cops to the thugs?
Hmmmm. well I stole it!
Gangs have been a problem in the US since the early 1800’s, late 1700’s.
The names of the gangs change as do their racial/ethnic make-up. The one thing that remains a constant is the feeling of ‘belonging to something special’. You see the same thing in the military with elite troops and there it is a good thing, however with gangs it isn’t good, but no way has ever been found to combat this.
Basti, there IS a way to combat it, but most people just don’t have the stomach for it…
Ol’ Fred, this is just the tip of the coming iceberg. . .
BZ
Yeah well, we need to heat it up and melt that iceberg a bit..
