According to the USMC Scout/Sniper School, the .50 BMG round has an effective and accurate range of 2,000 yards, and a maximum, absolute maximum range of 4.2 miles, and that is being fired from a USMC Scout/Sniper rifle...

As I said earlier, the guy had to have been a bit closer than he believed himself to be or he had some seriously *HOT* .50 BMG rounds...

Regardless the case, he did exhibit a great deal of personal responsibility by coming forward...

The Dallas Morning News reported that the man who came forward stated he "fired five or six rounds at a berm, a mound of dirt, with his .50-caliber Vulcan single-shot rifle." It in fact he was shooting into a dirt backstop and the bullet somehow made it through and accidentally caused injury, I would have a hard time convicting this individual.

My VERY first thought: how do rounds fall through the roof of an RV from a rifle range 5 miles away unless he was, somehow, firing into the air? At professional ranges, particularly those accepting .50 rifle practice at long range, there are customarily sufficient backstops to primarily include large, thick and tall dirt berms or appropriate rubberized range fill.

His coming forward was the right thing to do and indicates, at least on one level, proper responsibility. But there are still some facts missing.

Not so sure that the bullet would travel five miles especially if he fired it at a target and it hit the backstop, or even deflected off of the backstop. But kudos to him for being responsible.

Texas Fred--thank you kindly for the comments on my blog. I greatly appreciate them. You have gained a loyal reader in me and I will add your blog to my blog roll. Fell free to visit my blog often, good people like yourself are always welcome there.

Five miles? I don't think so, but this guy just might have opened a can of whoop-ass on himself.

To the best of my knowledge a military .50 cal sniper rifle was only able to make 2 miles before gravity won the fight.

What makes this guy think his .50 cal tripped a round for this long a distance? Five miles is something that's reserved for some serious artillery like a howitzer.

Ok Let me interject some reason to this damn discussion, OBVIOUSLY you guys are some gun toting, can shootin rednecks, no one is asking the real questions:
1. Was the woman related to the shooter?
2. Is there a steamy sex tape on the internet of them going at it?
3. IS there a jilted lover in the mix?
4. The man that fired the 50 cal. is he maybe WHITE and the victim was the only BLACK woman the event?

Damn I've lived in California way too long...

Kudos to the guy for coming forward, the good thing is no one got hurt, and I am sure if it was a NASCAR fan, sitting in her MOTOR HOME, she is more than likely one of those folks that will shake the mans hand and accept the apology, either that or she is one that will say .. OK MY TURN!

Patrick, I believe you're right and the chances for that round to travel 5 miles is highly unlikely. The man who fired the round and contacted police sounds like a honorable person. If I were him, I wouldn't want to live with the thought that I may have wounded an innocent person.
