Cheney, former attorney general, state senator indicted

McALLEN, Texas – A South Texas grand jury has indicted Vice President Dick Cheney and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales on state charges related to the alleged abuse of prisoners in Willacy County’s federal detention centers.

The indictment, which had not yet been signed by the presiding judge, was one of seven released Tuesday in a county that has been a source of bizarre legal and political battles in recent years. Another of the indictments named a state senator on charges of profiting from his position.

Willacy County District Attorney Juan Angel Guerra himself had been under indictment for more than a year and half before a judge dismissed the indictments last month. This flurry of charges came in the twilight of Guerra’s tenure, which ends this year after nearly two decades in office. He lost convincingly in a Democratic primary in March.

Cheney’s indictment on a charge of engaging in an organized criminal activity criticizes the vice president’s investment in the Vanguard Group, which holds interests in the private prison companies running the federal detention centers. It accuses Cheney of a conflict of interest and “at least misdemeanor assaults” on detainees because of his link to the prison companies.

Megan Mitchell, a spokeswoman for Cheney, declined to comment on Tuesday, saying that the vice president had not yet received a copy of the indictment.

Indictment does not necessarily equate to conviction. The Dems are going to present as many indictments as they possibly can, they have made that clear for a long time.

The Bush administration has been accused of being responsible for everything that has happened since 2001, and certainly they are responsible for some things, the economy is first and foremost in my mind. The Dems think that *war crimes* is a great mantra to chant but going into Iraq, while NOT the right thing to do in MY not so humble opinion, was NOT a crime.

I am thinking that this is nothing more than a desperate act, a Democratic *fluff piece* if you will. Cheney is a diversified businessman and I am willing to take serious bets that he is in NO WAY engaged in the day to day operations of Vanguard Group. I would also be fairly confident in saying that Cheney has NO interaction with Vanguard Group other than being an investor.

I am invested in several businesses through my financial folks, if one of those businesses happens to be a corrupt or illegal business entity, does that make ME guilty of engaging in an organized criminal activity??

I don’t think so. I don’t believe a court would think so either. And the Dems are going to keep on wasting time and money, TAXPAYER money, in their effort to *hang* Cheney, and ultimately, George W. Bush, with some kind of crime, be that crime real or imagined.

  1. Cheney and Bush will see more of this. They won’t have any peace for years to come.

This appears another in a growing line of desperate acts by desperat liberals who know the indictments won’t go anywhere but are being used to harass and cost defendants money. I wish there were ways of suing for these frivilous indictments.

  3. Katie says:

It is a well known fact that a DA can get a grand jury to indict a ham sandwich if he wants to.

I want to see if this comes to trial.

  4. Crap like this in the near future will make the Civil War between the Left and Right all the more probable. Take a look no farther than the corrupt Mark Rich pardoning Clinton Hack that “The Messiah” has nominated for Atty General.

  5. Carl Andrews says:

Christ, they won the election, you would think they would be satisfied,

  6. This is more “tit-for-tat” political bullshit inspired by some local dink and aimed at retribution. This means essentially nothing.

Just you wait for the REAL First Act, which WILL include indictments of Bush and others by the Demorats for “war crimes” and other such pronouncements.

With the Dems it WILL be ALL about punishment and revenge.

  7. I have to agree with everyone here. With one glaring difference.
Fred, the Feds have been pretty good at RICO convictions. Having only lost once to my knowledge. (The Hells Angels case)
After what Alberto et al did to those BP agents? I wouldn’t put it past them to try and pull something along those lines as retribution.
Maybe I should start looking over my shoulder because I know that my 401K involves Martin Marietta and a few other organizations that the commi’s would consider to be war criminals.

What can I say? Neither one of these guys was ever on my fav list and last I heard Gonzales was such a pariah he couldn’t find a job after Bush II showed him door.
