WASHINGTON (AP) – The Senate drove a stake Thursday through President Bush’s plan to legalize millions of unlawful immigrants, likely postponing major action on immigration until after the 2008 elections.
The bill’s supporters fell 14 votes short of the 60 needed to limit debate and clear the way for final passage of the legislation, which critics assailed as offering amnesty to illegal immigrants. The vote was 46 to 53 in favor of limiting the debate.
Senators in both parties said the issue is so volatile that Congress is highly unlikely to revisit it this fall or next year, when the presidential election will increasingly dominate American politics.
A similar effort collapsed in the Congress last year, and the House has not bothered with an immigration bill this year, awaiting Senate action.
It’s about time some of these Senators exhibited a bit of common sense, it’s been thoroughly lacking in recent days, this was an ill conceived measure to begin with, brought on by a RINO ASSHAT, John McCain and his drunk buddy, Teddy Kennedy, and thank God enough Senators came to their senses and brought this ignorant BS to a close, at least for now…
The vote was a stinging setback for Bush, who advocated the bill as an imperfect but necessary fix of current immigration practices in which many illegal immigrants use forged documents or lapsed visas to live and work in the United States.
Yes, it IS a stinging setback to The Little Prince, it’s time for that pandering ASSHAT to realize that he works for the people of the United States too, not the other way around, and hopefully this won’t be the last STINGING setback he experiences before he leaves office, Bush has literally turned his back on Conservatives and he has burned a lot of his Republican supporters in the process as well, and the Dems never did like him, this should seriously serve as a wake up call to him, it would to most people, any that can think past a 3rd grade level, but I personally don’t think Bush will be phased in any way, he cares nothing about poll numbers and he cares nothing about the people that put him in office…
It was a victory for Republican conservatives who strongly criticized the bill’s provisions that would have established pathways to lawful status for many of the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants.
They were aided by talk radio and TV hosts who repeatedly attacked the bill and urged listeners to flood Congress with calls, faxes and e-mails.
We’ve pissed off the President and the Dems, we’ve persuaded our Senators to stop this AMNESTY bill and now the voice of the American people is being heard, LOUD and CLEAR, and that makes me very proud, but we still have much work to do and a lot of Conservative seats in the Congress and Senate that need to be won back…
On a personal note, just to see the look on Teddy Kennedy’s face made this battle and victory all worthwhile…
So, you can look for the Dems to immediately take up their NEW cause, shutting down Conservative talk radio and getting Conservative bloggers out of the mix…
Conservative talk radio is a broad and powerful media and the Dem/Libs know they can’t compete with it, there is no interest in the Dem/Lib message, and Conservative bloggers have proven themselves to be a force to be reckoned with as well…

We better circle the wagons for 2008 as that’s the big election year and the politicians will be pandering for votes from every ‘special interest group’ in the nation.
Honestly I hope this issue is the cause for many congresscritters to be voted out when they are up for re-election. I apply this to both Republicans and Democrats as well as the few elected from neither party. We gotta get some TRUE representation in Washington instead of the power-hungry megalomaniacs currently in office.
Heard this afternoon that McConnell, from MY home state (KY), said after his last vote for cloture he got a LOT of angry phone calls.. not to mention the emails and faxes etc.. and decided to vote the way WE (his constituents) wanted.
Something el Presidente is forgetting is that congress is there to support the bills WE want, not to give him what he wants.
But ya know, I was all tore up this afternoon when he gave his heart wrenching reaction.. in tears I was..
Okay, that was a lie.. but ya gotta admit, I’d make a good politician..
OH YEAH!
I’M ONE HAPPY AMERICAN RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!
NOW IF WE CAN JUST GET RID OF THESE CRIMMIGRANTS AND THE ACLU,
AMERICA CAN GET BACK TO BEING AMERICA!
Well Fred, My happiness is tempered right now.
Here’s a few possibilities now that this Bushit bill got killed:
1. MORE Illegals will start swarming our nation, realizing that after Bush is out of office a DEM might take his place and put fourth an even bigger amnesty plan.
2. Congress will not do a damn thing to strengthen our borders, even though that is the MAIN reason we were against this bill. They will continue to waffle as the invasion continues, and our border agents sit in jail for doing their jobs.
3. Bush is now officially the lamest of ducks, one of the reasons the GOP reps were bailing on him on Iraq, was this SHAMNESTY plan. More of our soldiers are going to die in Iraq because Bush will not budge on Iraq now, because he is HURT over his sellout bill.
I am really happy about this bill getting killed, I offer kudos to all who sent letters and faxes and phone calls.
Lets keep the pressure on and tell them to ENFORCE the laws that have already been passed. BUILD THE DAMN FENCE!
I am sooo glad this was defeated….Kennedy is just tripping over himself in anger and that makes me do a 2 step dance at home lol.
Robert, I have a few ideas on how to ‘thin the herd’ AND protect the border, and they ALL involve .45 and .50 cal weapons…
Imagine that…
I’m proud to see democracy work (kinda) for a change. While I’m happy about the Kennedy-Bush amnesty bill being defeated, I’m very ashamed to see both of my Arizona RINO senators’ names on the list of those who voted for cloture. McCain & Kyl both need to be voted out of office for their betrayal. I’ll certainly do my part, I just hope my fellow Arizonans remember the Kyl & McCain betrayal come re-election time. Of course, McCain’s betrayal was to be expected, but Kyl’s support for amnesty was especially troubling since he campaigned on an anti-illegal immigration platform. I took the “Veterans for Kyl” bumper sticker off my car and mailed it back to him with a short note. Perhaps you’ll enjoy reading it…
