HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (AP) – Not yet a 2008 candidate, Fred Thompson energized young Republicans with a speech Saturday that was heavy on rhetoric and short on policy pronouncements. He branded Democrats as “the party of despair.”
Chants of “Fred” and “Run, Fred, Run,” greeted the actor and former GOP senator from Tennessee from many among the 350 people at the Young Republicans National Convention. The crowd interrupted his nine-minute speech with wild applause and mobbed him when he left.
“It makes me feel like the waters are pretty warm,” Thompson said afterward. He has formed an exploratory committee to gauge support for a White House run and raise money. He is expected to announce presidential campaign plans to run soon.
Hours later, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney also addressed the crowd and spoke about foreign policy, Iraq, the economy, health care and other issues. The substance of his remarks impressed some undecided voters.

Thompson Energizes Young Republicans
Thompson has energized some OLD Republicans too, Independents and Conservatives as well, and I think he is scaring the crap out of the Dimwits…
I have one problem with Thompson, and that’s the fact that he hasn’t announced officially yet, I guess he has his reasons, he doesn’t strike me as someone that likes to lose, and I am 99% certain that if Thompson gets in the race and as long as the RNC isn’t so stupid as to ignore him over their so far chosen one, Rudy, Fred Thompson can be the next POTUS…
But to do so he IS going to have to get very specific in his speeches, he is going to have to tell the people EXACTLY where he stands on each issue, he can’t let the left-wing media decide his position for him, he has to beat them to the punch, the accusations are already starting, look at the story right below this one…
Sen. Thompson has my support, but even so, I don’t see him as the perfect candidate, I’m not sure that critter even exists…

My only real fear is that the longer he delay’s announcing (one way or the other) the more the MSM and Democrats will demonize him. You’re correct when you stated that they are indeed afraid of a FDT run.
I will support him if he announces but right now I am supporting Tom Tancredo. I like where he stands on illegal immigration and the fact he has fought the RINOs over their runaway spending habits.
Is it just me or is the game of politics starting earilier this time?
Everyone is so disallusioned with who we have in office now we need some hope early on. For me this goes for the Pres to the Mayor. We have a political climate right now that sickens me. Amost every elected official has steered this nation left in the last 20 years. We need a major correction to keep from smashing on the rocks. I sure hope We get one.
Is Fred the Guy?
Right now my only hope is Tom Tancredo.
