Iraq Report May Mean Longer U.S. Surge
July 13th, 2007 . by TexasFredWASHINGTON (AP) – While many in Congress are pushing President Bush to alter course in Iraq by September if not sooner, his new status report on the war strongly implies that the administration believes its military strategy will take many more months to meet its goals.
The report cited no specific timeframe, but its language suggests what some U.S. commanders have hinted at recently: The troop reinforcements that Bush ordered in January may need to remain until spring 2008.
That’s a military calculation at odds with an emerging political consensus in Washington on bringing the troops home soon.
The disconnect between the military and political views on the best way forward is a symptom of four-plus years of setbacks in Iraq – not only missteps by the U.S. government but also by Iraqi political leaders, who have fallen far short of their stated aim of creating a government of national unity.

Iraq Report May Mean Longer U.S. Surge
Let’s stop beating around the bush here, no pun intended, this surge is nothing more than an attempt by George W. Bush to take the war in Iraq to a higher level of U.S. involvement, in the late 60’s that was called escalation and it made LBJ the most hated man the anti-war crowd had ever seen and caused great fissures in the American political scene, much as it’s doing today, but there’s one big difference, in the 1960’s Americans were still a fairly gullible and trusting bunch and it was thought to be traitorous and un-American to call the president on some foolish BS like we do today…
I’m not an anti-war person, I’m not a pacifist, give me a good reason and even as old and in ill health as I am today, the old war horse comes out and I am ready to rumble, for a good cause, but in MY opinion Iraq is NOT a good cause, it never was and never will be…
“U.S. commanders have hinted at recently: The troop reinforcements that Bush ordered in January may need to remain until spring 2008.” And come spring of ‘08, when the Iraqis still haven’t grown a set and the insurgents are still setting off car bombs and suicide bombs all over Iraq there will be a few U.S. commanders that care more about their career than the lives of their men and once again they’ll play like a puppet on a string and spout the Bush line of BS to Congress and Bush will go on TV and get all angry and try his best to look sincere as he again tries to scare the crap out of Americans by telling them that if we don’t fight the terrorists THERE, we’re gonna have to fight them HERE…
Look folks, I don’t know what it’s going to take to get that other 28% of this nation to see Bush and Company for what they truly are but I am afraid that it will be another attack, or series of attacks on this nation, on OUR soil, and if that’s what it takes to wake up the remaining Bush Bots, then there’s no hope for them…
And I have to wonder, IF there were to be an attack, or series of attacks on U.S. soil before this surge is declared Mission Accomplished, what would be the NEW excuse for Bush and the boys?? We didn’t surge big enough?? Or long enough?? Or strong enough??
Because you can bet the farm, there WILL be another excuse, and the sad part is, there is only one excuse, we don’t conduct guerrilla warfare operations very well, and we can thank our political correctness for that, along with our adherence to the Geneva Convention, an antiquated set of rules given todays war fighting complexion, a set of rules that only one side follows…
Yes, I know the ramifications of scraping our participation in the Geneva Convention, but as I have said on several occasions, and I have been called a genocidal maniac for having this view, I feel it bears repeating once again, until such time as we get as down and dirty as our enemies, and until such time as we kill a significantly larger number of them and their fighters than they can replace, this war will never end, you don’t WIN a war by playing nice, you win a war by killing the enemy and destroying everything they have, if you’re not prepared to take it to that level, you have no business conducting a WAR…
War is not for the feint of heart or the weak kneed bleeding heart politically correct crowd, war is a nasty, violent, heinous act committed upon humanity and an act not to be taken lightly, but if you’re not in it to win it, why go?? This surge is a joke, if we’re to be successful in Iraq we need close to 500K combat troops on the ground and we will have to conduct and old fashioned search and destroy, on the entire nation, and I can tell you right now, that will NOT win you any friends in theater, and before that effort is put forth, we must honestly ask ourselves, is Iraq, and OUR rewards for doing this really worth it??
Look at all the years we fought in South Vietnam and how in 1975 it was looked upon as a defeat for the U.S. military, which isn’t true, it WAS a defeat but it was a defeat for our politicians, not our troops, regardless, Vietnam is now one of our trading partners and becoming a stronger partner every day, but is that strong partner worth the 58,151 troops we lost there over the years?? I can’t answer that one but I will say this, it’s going to take a lot of convincing for me to believe it was worth it…
Surge, escalation, whatever they want to call it, it’s nothing more than a political game being played for the benefit of those making huge fortunes over it, and our young men and women are the game pieces being used to build those fortunes…

Well put, I was born the son of a Vietnam Vet whom saw his share of exactly what you and many others talk about in regards to the Vietnam War, the comparisons and so forth.
He was no REMF, so I do listen intently, and everything you say is alot of what I’ve heard from his own mouth. Plus my own interests and studying it.
You cannot win a war this way period. I get so upset sometimes that’ll smoke a half a pack a cigarettes in a very short time trying to figure this BS out. The WTF was ever learned from the Vietnam War?? Apparently not a damn thing.
So damn sad too, the military’s not to blame in no way shape or form and you’re so right we do not fight guerrilla warfare very well.
But unlike those in Washington, the military adapts, they learn.
When I was in it was all about learning maneuver warfare, the hey diddle diddle right up the middle was all but history.
I think we need to start treating these damn little towns, villages, or whatever the fuck like the WW2 island hopping campaign and overwhelm those bastards with everything we’ve got.
Then atop the mountain of rubble where Baghdad once stood raise OUR colors. A scene reminiscent to one on Mt. Suribachi.
If that don’t end it, the atomic bomb was dropped in 2 separate locations on Japan to save lives in the long run on both sides and put an end to it once and for all.
I’d rather there be a parallel to WW2 then Nam in the end.
To Hell with the human shields, that BS is one reason we CANT pop their asses when we want too, but they sure will pop ours.
