Cartels in Mexico’s drug war get guns from US

PHOENIX (AP) – As police approached a drug cartel’s safe house in northwestern Mexico last May, gunmen inside poured on fire with powerful assault rifles and grenades, killing seven officers whose weapons were no match.

Four more lawmen were wounded in the bloodbath and a cache of weapons was seized, including a single AK-47 assault rifle that authorities say was purchased 800 miles away at a Phoenix gun shop and smuggled into Mexico.

The rifle’s presence in Mexico underscores two realities in the government’s war against drug traffickers: Nearly all the guns the cartels use are smuggled into Mexico from the U.S., and officials say a small number of corrupt American weapons dealers are making the gun running possible.

“It’s a war,” said Bill Newell, special agent in charge of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Arizona and New Mexico. “It’s a war between the drug cartels. And it’s a war between the government and the drug cartels. And the weapons of war are the weapons that they are acquiring illegally here in the United States.”

I am going on record, right here, right now, ANY American caught buying guns with the express intent being to smuggle them into Mexico needs to be imprisoned until they are too old to pick up a gun. ANY gun dealer that is caught arranging, buying guns for, or smuggling guns into Mexico needs to have their license revoked and their freedoms as an American citizen removed, forever!!

The anti-gun people will use this report as an excuse to cry and complain about how we ALL need to lose our guns and rights, but those people are just plain STUPID! There’s no nice way to say it, and I am not known for my people skills so screw it, they are nothing less than STUPID. You can remove every LEGALLY owned gun in this nation and crime statistics will not decrease, not one bit, in fact, they will increase, exponentially.

Legal gun owners are NOT the ones out there robbing people, holding up stores and banks and committing various acts of unprovoked violence. HONEST gun owners are not the individuals that are purchasing, or otherwise acquiring guns for the Mexican gangs. The LEGAL gun owners of this nation want those actions stopped as much as the BATF does. This is something that hurts ALL of us, and our rights as LEGAL gun owners are in jeopardy because of the actions of a divisive few.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection, whose inspectors scrutinize border-crossers at ports of entry, declined to characterize the frequency of its searches of vehicles driving into Mexico, but conceded that not all traffic leaving America is searched.

Not all traffic leaving America is searched?? Really?? You think?? Well here’s another piece of shocking information, not all traffic ENTERING America is searched either. There is a constant involved in this entire matter. Guns OUT, drugs and ILLEGAL INVADERS in, and the border of this nation is as porous as a sieve! Until our border issues are FULLY and effectively addressed, until such time as our borders are fully secured, these problems will continue.

To the BATF I say this, do your job! Stop the ILLEGAL gun trade. That is your job. Capture the *bad guys* that use the freedoms of this nation to circumvent our laws to their advantage, take these guys OUT of the equation. Do the LEGAL gun owners a favor, take these cretins out and make U.S. gun owners, the honest, legal, safe, well trained believers in the 2nd Amendment that we are, make US the *good guys* again. That would be a welcome change!

And where are these ‘grenades’ coming from? I’ve also read reports that said you can buy those and RPG’s at gun shows in Texas.

Fred? Can you point those out to me? I’ld love an RPG-7 for squirrel hunting.

  2. TexasFred says:

Ya know, I DID overlook that part…

I have been to a lot of gun shows, and unless there is some behind the scenes, under the table BS going on, I have NEVER seen a live grenade at a gun show and I have never had anyone try to sell me one either…

Personally, I think it’s ALL a bunch of bullshit designed to try and get ALL guns, and the MSM is complicit in that effort, if there’s grenades being sold, I am saying right here, the BATF is NOT even remotely doing their job…

  3. thirdpower says:

OF course they’re complicit in it. It sells papers. CNN is just the same:

Days of our Trailers: “Weapons of War”

Most excellent rant, Fred! Perhaps if they actually stopped every single car, coming in or going out, then there’d be a bunch who would find the process so frustrating, they’d give it up, and go home. Just a thought.

  5. mrchuck says:

I attend most of the gun shows around here.
I have NEVER seen any ordinance here mentioned at any of them.

My guess is that someone has snuck something from an Army base, or someone has connections with international arms suppliers who get the arms from our Govt thru their own foreign govts.

  6. TexasFred says:

    Kate, this isn’t a rant… This is called BLOGGING…

    rant: intransitive verb
1 : to talk in a noisy, excited, or declamatory manner
    2 : to scold vehemently

OK, maybe we just invented RANT BLOGGING!! :P

  7. Kate says:

Well, if anyone can ‘scold vehemently’ very well, that would be you, Mr Fred. :D

  8. TexasFred says:

Yeah, but so few people are actually listening… :(

The only thing that keeps me doing this crap is the fact that one of these days I will be able to post the biggest *I TOLD YOU SO* post in the history of RANT BLOGGING!! :D

  9. Kate says:

And I’ve no doubt…one of these days….you will! And I’ll be doing the snoopy dance. Well, as best I can. heh.

  10. BobF says:

Hmmm, of all the guns in Mexico and all the killing taking place, they’re able to trace one gun to a shop in Phoenix? One (1) semi-automatic AK-47 and news reporter does a story how Mexican Drug Cartels are getting guns from the US.

With unlimited funds and resources, these cartels can get their AK’s directly from Russia, China, or any other nation that produces them. Also, they can get them in full auto mode. Why would they concern themselves with buying guns in the US and taking them back to Mexico?

I think this is part of what we can expect to read in the upcoming months to foster Obama’s anti-gun legislation. And, any BATF bureaucrat looking to further his career is going to go right along with it.

    It is ALL LIES.

Why would anyone with a dime’s worth of education believe that the drug lords of Mexico are going to pay retail prices in the U.S., pay mules to smuggle them down to Mexico and the graft to keep the Federales from sizing their property?

Wouldn’t it be much cheaper to just have the U.S. give money to the Mexican military to buy weapons like real AK 47s, heavy machine guns, grenades and RPGs then have the Federales you already pay off hand the toys over?

The drug lords are in the SMUGGLING BUSINESS. They don’t pay retail plus sales tax to buy a piece of crap Chinese SKS when they can import real AKs from any of two dozen countries for $25 price per unit!

GET REAL! Better yet DEMAND that any reporter reprinting this garbage investigate and show you WHERE the full auto AKs the Mexicans favor are purchased in the U.S.!

This is NOTHING but an attempt to blame the U.S. for Mexican corruption and take rights away from Americans who resist the Mexican invasion!

  12. StormWarning says:

Considering the penetration of the drug cartels into the US along with the blending of the cartels with local youth and criminal gangs, it isn’t hard to imagine how the cartels are getting their arms.

Separate question Fred. Are you aware of this movement that is coming?

  13. TexasFred says:

Yeah Storm, I have an inbox full of it, the gun forum has several pieces up on it…

It’s 18 states, I have NO idea what to do either, I live here in Texas and we aren’t on the list.. These people are just a bunch of idiots, and like the guy said, you can’t fix stupid…

The folks in those states need to campaign against it with all they have, but being a resident here, well, I don’t see much I can do for them other than written support, and I have done that…

  14. Kate says:

I have contacted my TN state rep, Vance Dennis, on the matter. I urged him to be a thorn to anyone in the state who actually supports such an oppressive bill! I will be pushing anyone and everyone I know to do the same.

  15. StormWarning says:

As “new” Texan, my friends and I have been buying by the 100′s. I’ll be in your neck of the woods, March 24/25.
