NY senator, husband keep 2 rifles under their bed

NEW YORK (AP) - Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, who has drawn criticism from fellow Democrats in New York because of her pro-gun stance, says she keeps two rifles under her bed.

Gillibrand says she and her husband, Jonathan, keep the firearms to protect their upstate home.

“If I want to protect my family, if I want to have a weapon in the home, that should be my right,” Gillibrand, who has two small children, said in an interview published in Monday’s Newsday.

Her spokesman, Matt Canter, said Monday that the rifles are not loaded and the Gillibrands follow gun-safety procedures. He would not say if they keep ammunition nearby.

Gillibrand was a little-known second-term congresswoman from a rural Republican district when she was tapped by Gov. David Paterson to fill the Senate seat vacated by Hillary Rodham Clinton.

As a member of the House, she had earned a 100 percent rating from the National Rifle Association.

The day her appointment was announced, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy threatened a 2010 primary challenge. She was elected to Congress after her husband was killed and her son wounded in a shooting rampage on a Long Island Rail Road train in 1993.

Gillibrand has said that her views are broadening as she moves from representing one rural district to the entire state. She has said she would work to fight gun violence while still protecting hunters’ rights.

What do you call a rifle under the bed?? An UNLOADED rifle?? Anyone?

I don’t know about you but I call it a *club*, an expensive club, and to use a rifle as a club is a terrible waste of a good rifle. Not that I wouldn’t use a rifle AS a club, but it would be my last resort because I ran OUT of ammo. If I was going to keep an unloaded weapon and think I was protected, well, a Louisville Slugger makes a better bat than a good rifle in my opinion.

Personally, I think this woman and her spokesperson are talking bullshit. Trying to establish her *gun support* credibility while not offending the overly sensitive liberal asshats that she represents. Just my opinion.

How about if we take HER, in exchange for John McCain?

BZ, at least SHE knows what she is, a Democrat, McCain doesn’t have a clue, WE know what the old bastard is, a RINO, but he doesn’t believe that.

Personally, I would rather deal with a real Democrat and a Liberal than to have to try and 2nd guess an angry old RINO like McCain.

I’m betting the rifles are loaded, and in much more accessible locations than under bed! It REALLY takes balls for a dem to state that, even if they are likely lying about them being loaded or not.

Fred, you have it right. This sort of story is designed to lure us into a false sense of security.

As you and others have reported she has already started selling out legislation SHE WROTE that her new BFF Chuckie Schumer doesn’t like.

Does she own guns? Yes. Will she go to the mattresses to support YOU owning guns? No. This doesn’t make her a good candidate. This makes her yet another lying, scum-sucking, hypocritical Democrat. She’s Joe Biden, boasting how Obama’s not taking his Beretta. No, not his handgun, his hyper-expensive rich-boy-toy trap gun. Joe thinks handguns are icky and if YOU own them then they are especially icky.

She’s gotten a promise that HER guns will be in HER hands. She’s ready to sell yours off in exchange for keeping her position of power long enough to get on the lobbying gravy train.

The vast majority of people in Upstate NY tend to be Conservative but they suffer the problem the rest of the country does. Their large cities are inhabited by liberal Democrats and their welfare constituency. When you take NY City, Buffalo, and Albany, the rest of the state doesn’t have a chance. We have the same problem here in Missouri with Kansas Cit and St. Louis.

Unfortunately, I look for Gillibrand to change her stance against gun control. I fear the power of being a US Senator and wanting to be in good with the Democrats will sway her position. A freshman Senator from NY State has more influence and power than a senior Senator from just about every other state.
