Bombers strike Iraqis celebrating soccer win

At least 50 people killed, 136 hurt during festivities for Asian Cup

BAGHDAD – Two suicide car bombings struck soccer fans in Baghdad as they were celebrating Iraq’s victory in the Asian Cup semifinal on Wednesday, killing at least 50 people and wounding more than 136, officials said.

The victims were among the thousands of revelers who took to the streets of the capital after the country’s national soccer team beat South Korea to reach the tournament’s final against Saudi Arabia on Sunday in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The first attack took place about 6:30 p.m. when a bomber exploded in a crowd of people cheering near a well-known ice cream parlor in Baghdad’s western neighborhood of Mansour, according to police and hospital officials. At least 30 people were killed and more than 75 wounded, the officials said.

Another suicide car bomber detonated his payload about 45 minutes later in the midst of dozens of vehicles filled with revelers near an Iraqi army checkpoint in the eastern district of Ghadeer, killing at least 20 people, including two soldiers, and wounding nearly 60, area officials said.

Maybe it’s time for an all out offensive in Iraq, one that will settle this insurgency once and for all, and will place the Iraqi military and police in a position of strength, a position where they should be able to handle any situation that develops in THEIR nation…

I have long said that I do NOT believe Iraq was where we needed to go at the time we went there, these type of attacks we NOT happening to the Iraqi people before we went into Iraq, all they really had to worry about was angering Saddam, and as long as that didn’t happen, everything was pretty much OK, because Saddam ruled with an iron fist, he wouldn’t have allowed these things to take place in HIS Iraq, he would have had the persons responsible tracked down and killed, well, maybe it’s time we did more than just surge

And once that’s taken place and the Iraqis are fully in control of Iraq and all the insurgents and al-Qaida are dead, then there won’t be any of them left to follow us home to attack us here, or however that bullshit fear mongering excuse of a Bush story in search of vindication goes…

Here’s the thing, I have never said we are losing in Iraq, we have NOT lost, we have been seriously misled and lied to by the Bush administration, the war has been seriously mismanaged and micromanaged by the Bush administration and the minions OF Bush and Company but our war fighters haven’t lost a damned thing, our politicians may have let them down but our fine troops haven’t LOST…

These recent blasts that killed and wounded so many Iraqis aren’t directed AT the U.S.A. as such, not directly, these blasts are designed to demoralize the Iraqi people in general and done to force them to renounce ANY attempt at democratization, and short of fully wiping out each and every terrorist IN Iraq, there’s not much more WE can do to stop it from happening, it’s up to the Iraqi people now, do they wish to stand as a force and fight for their own freedom and suffer the consequences in the process, or do they submit and cower down as a defeated people?? A people that have been defeated by terrorists that force them to bow to radical Islam or die??

We can train the Iraqis, we can equip the Iraqis, we can stand WITH the Iraqis if they are willing to stand and fight for their freedom from Islamic tyranny, but we can’t GIVE them that freedom, the average, every day Iraqi on the street has got to stand and demand that freedom and be willing to fight and maybe die in earning that freedom for his homeland and family, the Iraqis have got to call in any threat they see, anything out of the ordinary that they see, in so many cases I am convinced that there are many Iraqis that are supporting this insurgency, at least covertly, and maybe not intentionally, but by their silence they are more than covertly supporting it…

If the Iraqis will stand and fight, this war is NOT lost and our efforts have not been in vain, but if the Iraqis aren’t willing to give a 100% effort for themselves, then it IS time to cut our losses and move on to greener pastures, like destroying the insurgency ourselves and not worrying about the collateral damage that battle will incur…

What the hell, we can’t make the terrorists hate us much MORE than they already do, let’s by God engage them with a ferocity that will give them pause about attacking the U.S.A. and her people ever again…

If this was going on anywhere in the USA, we would have them under control, under arrest or dead within hours. Why would we be able to squash them so quickly, because Americans wouldn’t put up with this shit? Hundreds of leads would be coming in seconds after the first bomb went off.

Why in God’s name is this not the case in Iraq?

I concur; have been saying this for years, Fred…
