I didn’t know whether to call this story ‘Johnny wears ‘flip-flops’ on the campaign trail’ or maybe, ‘Elmer Fudd rethinks his position and sacrifices what little moral character he had left in an attempt to fool true conservatives’, but hey, that’s just way too long, anyway, there are a number of possibilities for sub-titles, how about this, ‘McCain shows true self, willing to sell out for votes’??
Maybe we could go with, ‘McCain, too addled brained to know the difference in right and wrong’, that’s pretty catchy I think, or there’s this possibility, ‘I’m John F’n McCain and I’m a war hero, so I KNOW what I’m talking about’, and my very favorite was ‘Kennedy backer backs off on immigration in attempt to appease conservative voters’…
Wait!! That’s it, that’s the ticket, ‘John McCain compromises his principles and alliance with Teddy Kennedy in cheap attempt to appease conservative; Conservatives not buying it, tell McCain to shove it’…
Yeah, I know, way too long for a title line, but you gotta admit, it sure speaks the truth…
WASHINGTON (AP) – Republican presidential hopeful John McCain on Thursday backed a scaled-down proposal that imposes strict rules to end illegal immigration but doesn’t include a path to citizenship.
The move away from a comprehensive measure is an about-face for the Arizona senator, who had been a leading GOP champion of a bill that included a guest worker program and would have legalized many of the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants living in the U.S. It failed earlier this year.
“We can still show the American people that we are serious about securing our nation’s border,” McCain said in a statement, adding that the new bill would “provide an essential step toward achieving comprehensive reform in the future.”
McCain’s immigration position has been a campaign liability among Republican voters and hurt his efforts to raise money. Other GOP presidential candidates, fellow Arizona Republicans and immigration opponents throughout the country have loudly decried his position.
Observers said McCain’s switch was political. “He recognizes his position on the issue is killing him,” said Steven Camarota, research director at the Center for Immigration Studies, which favors vigorous immigration enforcement.

With his heroic past, he was my initial choice… but his behavior has been disappointing.
Sometimes a flip-flop can be a good thing- if a politician honestly admits an error, by way of “ZOMG what on earth was I thinking? Sorry, I’ll pay more attention to what is REALLY best for the country,” and changes a position to support the will of the American people… though usually by then it’s aparent that such a serious error will leave them with a bad rep and make people think twice about trusting them with power… harsh, but hey, that’s the nature of the game and the stakes are the future of the nation. I want to know our leaders are paying better attention than they have been… and if they’re asleep at the wheel like Congress, then they have no business being in power.
For him to continue floundering for the presidency just tarnishes his reputation, and I hate seeing a hero go down like that.
I would love to see him bow out gracefully, honorably admit he made some bad choices, and then throw all his remaining support and power behind Tancredo.
McCain has a rather serious case of PTSD. Now, I am just a dumb assed retired Paramedic. But even I can see it.
My God Senator. Go away, please, while you still have at least a tiny vestige of honor.
I will most definitely not vote for Mitt Romney. Although Hezbollah has provided some social services in Lebanon – like handing out cash to people whose homes were destroyed by bombs – these social services come at a steep price: terrorism. Hezbollah is nothing more than a terrorist group; Romney never should have held them up as a “role model.”
Even before his latest comments, I was skeptical of Romney because he was the governor of Massachusetts. He was a self-professed moderate in the nineties; now, his dramatic shift to the right seems driven by little more than political ambition.
