I am not a “Windows” expert, but I’ve used a windows box of one kind or another everyday, and have so for a very long time now. I fairly proficient with Linux, QNX, embedded hardware and the like, I use very little anti-viral software, don’t need to as I practice safe computing.

* Never ever use IE, I mean never, zilch, zero.
* Only accept commercial emails with Outlook at work, but use Thunderbird at home
* Firefox is set to ask about cookies
* I use noscript to meter who I allow to run java-script on my computer http://noscript.net/getit
* At work I have AVG running, corporate wide thing of course, seems to be decent, but consumes serious horse power though

* Oh, at home, my primary web browsing machine is running MacOS

Butch is right on, I refuse to pay for antivirus, spyware, malware or firewall programs. I use everything Butch said. You definitely don’t need to defrag everyday, that is way overkill and actually bad for you hard drive in the long run.

I have a custom system, though it’s pretty standard fare. I use a company I’ve been using since I first went on line back in ’96 or so. They have always treated me right. I use Firefox, Avast, and AVG, and am careful. I picked up a virus a couple of months ago and it fried the hard drive.

I dropped DSL for the very same reasons, I don’t like talking to bum f**k Egypt, India, Sri Lanka, or the Philippines. They can all ‘bite me’.

The Dell itself is awesome, their Techs are the problem, Indian sons a bitches…

Norton works great for me too, I got hit with more than Norton could handle, I know where it came from too, but that’s OK, the favor was returned…

Run Disc Cleanup and Defrag Top, it WILL speed you up, run em often, it clear the clutter…

Also, I thought Dell had moved their customer support back to the USA, after their customer support ratings went into the trash can with all of the complaints from customer’s dealings with India employees.

I guess they did not move it back after all.

Hopefully I will not need them anytime soon. I let my support drop years ago anyway.

I have had this Dell since 2004, and it has been good so far.

I do use firefox though being 99% of most viruses are written to attack IE.

I have had Norton for two years, no problems. Had McAfee for four years before that, no problems.

Haven’t run defrag in probably a year or more. System is running fine on DSL hookup here.

Mine sets a restore point every day or 2, and I just ran Microsoft’s Malicious Software Removal Tool, all is well!!
