NEW YORK (AP) — Airlines and aviation-related companies sued the CIA and the FBI on Tuesday to force terrorism investigators to tell whether the aviation industry was to blame for the Sept. 11 attacks.
The two lawsuits in U.S. District Court in Manhattan sought court orders for depositions as the aviation entities build their defenses against lawsuits seeking billions of dollars in damages for injuries, fatalities, property damage and business losses related to Sept. 11, 2001.
The aviation companies said the agencies in a series of boilerplate letters had refused to let them depose two secret agents, including the 2001 head of the CIA’s special Osama bin Laden unit, and six FBI agents with key information about al-Qaeda and bin Laden.
The airlines, airport authorities, security companies and an aircraft manufacturer said they were entitled to present evidence to show the terrorist attacks did not depend upon negligence by any aviation defendants and that there were other causes of the attacks.
They said that the depositions were likely to result in evidence showing the terrorists were sophisticated, ideologically driven and well-financed and would have succeeded regardless of any action by the aviation entities.

It’s all about the law suits and assigning blame, and I can understand that, there’s always some folks looking to sue the crap out of anyone they can, but 9-11 wasn’t the fault of the airlines and the airlines need some protection on this, at least this time around…
On the morning of 9-11 America lost what little bit of innocence it had left, we, and by WE I mean the average American, never considered the full ramifications of not enforcing our immigration laws and expired student visas, we never really considered the possibility that those students were actually here studying how to kill us…
The airlines were fairly lax in their screening but how can they be blamed for the actions of a few dedicated terrorists?? The airlines were merely a means to an end…
If there is blame to be placed, blame the terrorists themselves, and know that the U.S. wasn’t on full alert, that’s what it all boils down to, none of us were on full alert, we should have been, but there’s always that thing about 20/20 hindsight, the terrorists saw a weakness and exploited it to the maximum, now, we have to make certain that we leave no weakness to be exploited, like open ports and borders and so forth and so on…
If we’re attacked again, on our soil, then there IS a blame to be placed, if airliners are used as weapons again then there is a serious breakdown in airport security and screening, if we’re attacked again and the attackers are found to be in this nation ILLEGALLY, then there is blame to be placed on the INS and other affiliated agencies, if we’re attacked again and the attackers are found to be LEGAL residents, students, seekers of asylum or any other status that would qualify as LEGAL, then we have a breakdown in OUR screening process and the verification of intent and purpose for those individuals being IN this nation, and maybe then we could consider not letting every Tom, Dick and Abdul into America…
9-11 was innocence lost, anything that happens now is nothing more than our government NOT doing their job of protecting this nation and it’s lawful citizens…

Best damn thing I’ve read all day , Fred.
Now, many years ago, I used to fly quite often…several times a week was not abnormal. Never once did I have a “decent, normal” flight…hell once in the 60′s I ended up with a concussion and a bunch of stitches from turbulance. Well, I quit flying in the 80′s. I hate, hate, hate planes..not as much as paedo’s but close, and were I queen for a day, I’d hide them all.
That said, the airlines are not at fault for 9/11…the lawsuits just show greed( nope..didn’t sue for my stitches either )and I am totally against them for this. We all lost that day. We should concentrate on security and screw the lawsuits…priorities, ya know ? Never thought I would defend an airline/airplane in my life….omg…my brain has scrambled !
I blame Islam. It’s the one common thread in nearly all terrorist attacks in recent modern history. Islam. Violent. Intolerant. Cowardly….and now Vagrant, yes vagrant. Squatting in and sucking the free wind out of western civilizations the world over who don’t have the balls to protest or defend themselves for the screwed up sake of political correctness. France, Sweden, UK, and the United States…all quickly succumbing to the shove of Sharia Law. Hiding under the protection of the very legal systems they seek to destroy, they are more like a virus than a religion.
Islam. It’s their fault. It’s time we hold them responsible. It’s not “individuals” or “groups of individuals” committing these atrocities. It’s the entire culture. Were it not, moderate Muslims would be coming out of the woodwork to condemn these violent acts…..but alas, they are mysteriously absent and refusal to condemn is tantamount to condoning. Screw ‘em. Screw ‘em all. Violence, is quelled most often by violence. We have no problem with projecting violence here in the US…it’s just high time we direct that violence in the right direction. If your Mosque has an Imam who preaches Genocide of Jews and Christians, you ought to get an immediate delivery of a Tomahawk cruise missile right through the front door. If you call for attacks, attacks is what you should receive. Sorry if you got women and children in there…you hide behind them anyway. If they die, it’s your fault.
It is not the fanatical who are our mortal enemy. In Islam, there is no “fanatical”. There is no “moderate”. There is only “True Islam”. Islam cannot peacefully coexist alongside any other doctrine or belief system. It must subdue it, or it must eliminate it but it can never befriend it. We can continue to bury our heads in the sand and cut of the infinite heads of the Terrorist Hydra. Or we can pierce it at it’s very heart. Make no mistake…we will never win this war the way we are fighting it. We will never appease them. We will never accommodate them. We will never pacify them. We will never reason with them. They will continue to spread their infection by the sword because they are compelled to do so. If there is a free nation left on this planet 5 generations from now, it will be because that nation has declared war on the religion, the culture, the government, and the way of life, that is Islam.
Now if you’ll excuse me, Federal Agents have just arrived to arrest me for committing a “hate crime”.

Control of the borders and knowing who is in the country legally and illegally will go a long way to stop the acts of terror against us. And periodic background checks of those in the country legally will also help.
It is a dilemma…those who want to destroy the freedom we cherish are using that very freedom to destroy us. But freedom is not now nor has ever been free and sometimes we have to temporarily give up some freedom to keep some freedom and insure that we have all of our rights in the future.
This is not anything new. It has been the facts of life in just about every war this country has been in and I can’t see that the war against the raghead terrorists should be any different.
And by the way, I consider those who are trying to legally extort money from the airlines (and their lawyers) as terrorists and should be dealt with accordingly.

I agree with the sentiments expressed above. Unfortunatley, I also read some liberal blogs and I know there are plenty of people out there who are appalled that we are taking any security arrangements at all, since this is “racist.” There are so many “well meaning idiots” as Stalin used to call them, that I wonder if the country can function adequately to prevent another attack. I certainly wouldn’t live in D.C., New York or any of the other big cities on a bet.
