On Terrorist Watch List, but Allowed to Buy Guns
WASHINGTON — People on the government’s terrorist watch list tried to buy guns nearly 1,000 times in the last five years, and federal authorities cleared the purchases 9 times out of 10 because they had no legal way to stop them, according to a new government report.
In one case, a person on the list was able to buy more than 50 pounds of explosives.
The new statistics, compiled in a report from the Government Accountability Office that is scheduled for public release next week, draw attention to an odd divergence in federal law: people placed on the government’s terrorist watch list can be stopped from getting on a plane or getting a visa, but they cannot be stopped from buying a gun.
Gun purchases must be approved unless federal officials can find some other disqualification of the would-be buyer, like being a felon, an illegal immigrant or a drug addict.

No responsible, LEGAL, gun owning American wants to see guns, ammunition or explosives fall into the hands of terrorists, or potential terrorist. The government’s terrorist watch list should be an indicator of persons needing to be watched because they are highly suspect of wanting to commit acts of terrorism. The government should do everything in it’s power to protect the American citizens from the dangers posed by these terrorists and potential terrorists. That’s the governments job. Right?
So you would think.
“This is a glaring omission, and it’s a security issue,” Senator Frank R. Lautenberg, the New Jersey Democrat who requested the study, said in an interview.
Mr. Lautenberg plans to introduce legislation on Monday that would give the attorney general the discretion to block gun sales to people on terror watch lists.
Wow, that’s simply awesome, Lautenberg has OUR best interest at heart and wants to help protect us by giving Eric Holder discretionary oversight on blocking gun sales to people on terror watch lists. This just keeps on getting better.
Terror watch LISTS? How many lists are there? Wouldn’t it be a lot more efficient to have just ONE terror watch list and place it on a shared data base so all federal agencies involved could have ready access to it and thus keep an even more watchful eye on potential terrorists?
The Democrats are masters of deception. This bill that Lautenberg is planning to introduce is nothing more than another ‘back door’ attack on American gun owners. It is just another tool being put in place by the federal government as they attempt to remove ALL guns from the hands of United States citizens.
Here’s what the deceitful Dems and anti-gun people won’t tell you, these ‘terrorist watch lists’ don’t just include a bunch of radical Islamic terrorists and their supporters! Folks just like you and me are on at least some of the governments watch lists. We are there simply because we blog, we speak out, we’re involved in the TEA Party protests, we’re veterans, we have military combat experience, we own guns and they know that some folks among us, even though we are American patriots through and through, are a danger to the U.S. government if it were to become the enemy itself.
Gun rights advocates said showing up on a terrorist watch list should not be grounds for being denied a gun.
That would be US folks, GUN RIGHTS ADVOCATES. The men and women of America that DARE to stand by their 2nd Amendment rights. Those that DARE to say that a FREE people are not be denied RIGHTS! Yes, WE, THE PEOPLE are on their terror watch lists, and no matter how many times, or how many different ways Janet Napolitano tries to ‘explain’ her words about Domestic Terrorists, she let the cat OUT of the bag. The true intent of the Obama regime has been shown.

Friends, apparently, our government must fear us, otherwise, why would they try to disarm us? But I have to ask, WHAT is our government afraid of?? What is it that they think we’re going to find that gives them reason to fear the armed American? Do they think that the majority of Americans are going to wake up one morning and suddenly realize that they have been sold off and floated down the river of SOCIALISM? Surely not.

We MUST be ever vigilant. In recent months the government has become the ENEMY of the American gun owner and the freedoms that ALL Americans have long taken for granted and enjoyed.
Barack Hussein Obama supposedly said, ‘My friends, we live in the greatest nation in the history of the world. I hope you’ll join with me as we try to change it’. If Obama believe the USA is so great, WHY does he, the Dems, the anti-gun Libtards, PETA and the like all feel that they have to change us?
If I for one minute believed that this BS being put forth by Frank Lautenberg was being done to actually protect America from TERRORISTS, real terrorists, I wouldn’t hesitate to support it. But when WE, THE PEOPLE are considered to be the terrorists, perhaps it’s time for WE, THE PEOPLE to affect some long over due changes of our own!
If I’m going to wear the name, I’m going to play the game. 
So, let me get this straight….I, as a law abiding citizen, have to go through an appeals process for every gun I want to buy for something that happened and was dropped 20 years ago, but someone who is on a REAL terror list can go out and buy explosives? Am I reading that right?
One more straw they’re trying to lay on us. One of these days they’ll try the last straw, and then it’ll be Katy Bar the Door time! We shouldn’t be surprised though. The good thing is that there’s a lot of stupidity in their ranks and one or another of them always tips their hand!!! Thank the Lord for that. Bottom line is:

That’s become my family’s motto. So much so that all those neat gun purchases that I was saving up for, like USFA Single Action, Shiloh Sharps Rifle,etc.) have been put on hold. And the focus now is on what my family and I will need for the up-coming fight. The neat wish list will have to wait until that’s over, and we have our Country back on track.

Put HIS ASS on OUR terror list and make sure the name stays there and don’t get the chance to resurface somewhere else unless it’s the obiturary column. I’m sick, and gettin sicker of these crooked, bribe takin, ass suckin political dumbtards. Vigilante - Agree! I think all the bums need to go……Administration, Congress, and most of the Supreme Court (including the current nominee). Our Country has real enemies out there. Iran and North Korea come to mind. So instead of all this focus on us so-called domestic terrorists, we need to be preparing for a real engagement. I have been following the commentaries by J. D. Longstreet on Faultline USA Blog/feed. He’s been hitting the nail on the head! He has something to say today about the “Real” Terrorists who threaten this Country. It’s right on the mark!

I can almost envision a background check to purchase a gun like the type you have to go through for a security clearance. If it comes to that, you best know your parents background to when they were children.
This is precisely why years ago I said to stop using the “law abiding citizen” terminology! All these jerkwads need to do is change the law. Notably, since the passage of the Domestic Violence Act, ex post facto law, is the law of the land. So, if you ever did it in your entire life (broke the new law) you could be banned. All they need to do, again, is change the law…
Or, in this case, they don’t need to make a new law, just change a definition over at the DOJ.
Patrick - You have nit the nail right on the head. Ayn Rand said something similar in her book Atlas shrugged. She wrote something like “The Government has the most control over criminals…so…if you don’t have enough control over the citizens you make criminals out of them by passing so many laws that it’ is impossible for men to live without breaking a them.” Something like that. I guess I should dust the book off and re-read it. It has lots of parallels with what’s happening today.

It’s not exactly falling on deaf ears, since they agree, but are not ready to do anything…yet. None of them served nor did other members of their family. Nothing negative about that.
