Hispanic rights group at center of Sotomayor fight
July 11th, 2009 . by TexasFredNEW YORK (AP) – Cesar Perales has fought his share of critics over the years, in legal battles for minorities denied jobs, bilingual classes in schools and more Latino police officers. But none of those efforts compares with the tempest his Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund has stirred because of the dozen years that Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor served as one of its board members.Conservatives have called the group’s stances on capital punishment and abortion rights, as well as its advocacy of affirmative action in worker discrimination cases, “extreme” and “shocking.” Some have suggested Sotomayor’s longtime association with the group is an indication that she is biased and would be unable to render impartial decisions as a Supreme Court justice.
The critiques leading up to next week’s Senate hearings on Sotomayor’s confirmation have stunned Perales, who calls them an attempt to derail her nomination by over-politicizing the work of his legal defense fund.

Another suit against the city’s police department brought about an increase in the number of Latino officers in the police force. The group mounted a successful legal challenge in 1981 that postponed city elections over concerns about redistricting.
Latino police officers? That’s a viable issue? Is New York City a Latino city? Is it a Mexican or South American city? Is it *Little Puerto Rico* or is it a part of the United States of America? These guys don’t want it to be about RACE yet they file suits based on RACE, and racial preferences? Affirmative action basically? And did I mention?? They support Sonia Sotomayor?

I would be soundly lambasted by all as a racist, a sexist and a dangerous person! Yet there are very few that find that statement to be sexist, racist or dangerous when it comes from the mouth of Sonia Sotomayor. And before ANY of the ‘races‘ begin their chant of TexasFred is a racist, let me ask you ALL this question; do you remember Harriet Miers? A nomination to the SCOTUS made by George W. Bush?
All of my long time readers know, I opposed Harriet Miers, as did MANY Conservatives, and you can’t get too much whiter than Miers, unless you’re an albino. Miers wasn’t opposed because of her race or sex, she was opposed because she was NOT a qualified candidate for the Supreme Court, and many of us were in open warfare mode against her and what we perceived to be Bush cronyism.
I don’t oppose Sotomayor because of her gender or ethnic background. I oppose Sotomayor because she was an ineffective judge. I oppose Sotomayor because she IS a racist, her words stand in testament. I oppose Sotomayor because she IS a flaming liberal. If we could ALL stand in opposition to Harriet Miers and not be called names, why is it that if we stand in opposition to Sotomayor, we are suddenly racists and sexists?
Oh, wait, I remember, it’s that selective hypocrisy and selective outrage thing the libbers and race baiters are so good at. Silly me…
Hey, only whites can be racist, Texas Fred. You know that nothing can be based on merit – it all has to do with skin color and we’re racist if we don’t agree! Buncha racist bastards. Seems to me the real racists today are non-white.

Kate – Hispanics come from the country of Hispania, which I think is right on the boarder with the land of Hysteria. I haven’t found it yet…but what do I know. I’m an old fart that studied geography back in the 50s. (smiley face goes here)

Yep…I would say she is a Racist….but more than that she is incompetent. No way should she be placed on the highest court in the land when over 50% ( which I think is actually 60% ) of her rulings have been overturned. Now who it their right mind would hire someone that has only a 40% at best productivity rating ???…No one that would weigh everything out. That not saying I’m racist and wouldn’t hire her….it’s just I would hire a dumba**.
