Boston Zoo May Close, Euthanize Hundreds of Animals

The Franklin Park Zoo, a Boston landmark for nearly a century, may be forced to close and euthanize up to a fifth of the animals in its care due to devastating budget cuts.

New England’s largest zoo and its counterpart, the Stoneham Zoo, saw their state funding cut from $6.5 million to $2.5 million by Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, the Boston Globe reported, and expects to run out of money by October.

Zoo officials said they would have to lay off most of their 165 employees and find new homes for the more than 1,000 animals they currently house, the Globe reported. Those they cannot relocate — at least 20 percent, officials estimate — may have to be destroyed.

The Zoo’s director is now calling on state lawmakers to override Gov. Patrick’s decision, which he made with a line-item veto of the legislature’s budget. More than half of the zoo’s funding comes from the state.

I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, PETA will go ape over this one. Yes, pun definitely intended.

I see an opportunity here, I see a planned event to get ALL of the people of Boston together. I see an event that will help the zoo, the budget and the less fortunate in Boston. I see an event that can feed the hungry and provide nourishment for those needy and malnourished individuals that are sorely in need of a good meal.

If you must euthanize, utilize… Bar-B-QUE!!

Never let fresh meat go to waste! :D

A grill, some charcoal, some hickory or mesquite wood, a huge simmering pot of Ranch Style Beans, a few slabs of raw Vidalia onion, roasted haunch of gorilla, smoked tiger and cheetah, grilled Boa Constrictor on a bun, chimp-kabobs, a few cold brewskis, and voila, a Boston Block Party and summer BBQ event for the masses.

When life hands you a bucket of lemons, make lemonade!

Have Pit, Will Travel. How much better can it get?? :P

Maybe not the cats but those elephant, deer and other plant eaters would be delicious.

    Bring on the BBQ!

Oh, come on – the cats would be gamey like bear, but not as greasy. Yummers! Maybe some extra garlic garnish on the cats to make them a bit more palatable…

That’s a NICE grill! I’d sure like to taste elephant and some other large animals normally reserved for africans after a safari. You might want to go look and check to make SURE the grill is still there-I bet it would work good in ky too. LMAO Fred

You’re all sick I tell ya, sick, sick, sick. Just wait till janet napolitano gets wind of this. Frankly, I don’t want to be anywhere near the “wind”
coming from you guy’s after eating garlic garnish and elephant rib eye and downing it with some tusker beer. Talk about polution!!!!!!!!!
That would give them a whole new meaning to pass the cap and trade bill. LOL

We’re not sick…we might be after eating all those critters. I guess if we did burp…that would be CO2…but the other is all methane gas….not covered under the Cap & Trade.
By the time we finish we might be able to furnish them with enough to heat 3 homes for the winter.

Elephant is quite good, so is giraffe. I’ll bring a case or two of my homebrew. Quite powerful stuff, but smooth going down.

What type of marinades are we using? I’ll throw in some potato salad, who else?

See this is why it is necessary for leaders of nations to be from OUTSIDE the city limits… I am not sure of this but it appears that the biggest Presidential failures had deep roots in heavily populated cities….We need common sense solutions like this.

I LOVE vegitarians… they TASTE GREAT! oh and when you stick an arrow or bullet in em they make cool sounds!

I think when I kill my first hog this year I’m going to put it in the truck and drive it around Cal State Irvine with the tusks hanging off the tail gate and see if I can’t start a mass protest….LMAO!

I plan on buying a quarter elephant, and freezing it. I’ve been wanting to build my food storage up. Also, anyone have a good panda recipe?

I wonder what elephant jerky tastes like?
