U.S., Iraqi Forces Kill 33 Insurgents
August 28th, 2007 . by TexasFredBAGHDAD (AP) – Hundreds of U.S. and Iraqi forces backed by helicopters and jet fighters attacked and killed 33 Sunni insurgents who were holding back the water supply to the Shiite town of Khalis, the American command said in a statement Tuesday.
The assault began before dawn on Monday when a joint force was landed by helicopter in the village of Gubbiya, 10 miles east of Khalis. The assault force killed 13 fighters and attack aircraft killed 20 others, the military said. The area is known to be controlled by al-Qaida in Iraq. Khalis, 50 miles north of Baghdad, has been the scene of repeated Sunni insurgent bombings and mortar attacks.
“The objective of the mission was to open the spillway, which regulates water flow to the town of Khalis, restoring the essential service of water,” the statement said.
The assault uncovered three weapons caches, led to the capture of three men and “water is currently flowing unimpeded to Khalis,” the military said. The statement did not say if any U.S. or Iraqi soldiers were killed or wounded.
This is the good news we need to hear, and it’s also the type of operation our military needs to be conducting, a mission that provides services for the people of Iraq and also rids that nation of more insurgents and their weapons, how good can it get?? 2 birds with one stone…
I wonder though, how long will it be before al-Jazeera and the like headline a story about ‘U.S. troops destroy orphanage and hospital in bid to dominate Iraqi water resources’?? It’s bound to happen…
Another Front leader, Adnan al-Dulaimi, said the accord included “good decisions that would serve the whole Iraqi people.”
“But we doubt that they will be implemented,” he said. “All our experience with al-Maliki indicates that this is another new set of delaying measures. They give you a glimmer of hope, but at the end of the day you get nothing but promises.”
These are the differences that the Iraqis must work out for themselves, they have their own deep divides in government, as do we here in the USA, the big difference in OUR government and theirs, we may argue among ourselves but we’re not walking out of Congress and blowing each other up, if Iraq would open it’s eyes and move into the 21st century, they may find the world to not be such a bad place after all…
The Iraqis have the government that THEY elected, if it’s not serving them in the manner they like, vote it out and start over, and we need to let THEM have the government THEY want, unless we are specifically asked to intervene, we need to butt out of Iraqs politics and move in a direction of leaving Iraq to it’s own destiny…

LOL. “The Iraqis have the government that THEY elected, if it’s not serving them in the manner they like, vote it out and start over”
Sounds like something WE should do as well…….just a thought.
Slowly but surely we are seeing a nation rise from the ashes of Sadaam’s Iraq. It took this country from 1775 until after 1900 to get our act together. We can’t expect Iraq to accomplish the same in a few years time.
If Iraq is to be a sovereign nation, we have no business telling their leadership how to run their country. We can’t expect Iraq to be another America. The people there have different values and mindset from Americans. Like you said, they elected their government and it’s up to them to vote them out of office if they’re unhappy.
