BAGHDAD (AP) – Four U.S. Marines were killed in fighting in Anbar province, and three soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb in northern Iraq, the military said Friday.
The four Marines assigned to Multi National Force – West were killed Thursday while conducting combat operations in Anbar, a predominantly Sunni province west of Baghdad that has seen a recent drop in violence, according to a statement.
Three Task Force Lightning soldiers also were killed Thursday when a bomb exploded near their vehicle in the northern Ninevah province, the military said separately.
The deaths raised to at least 3,760 members of the U.S. military who have died since the Iraq war started in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.
It never fails, maybe the surge is working, maybe not, but every time the President gets on television bragging about how well HIS plan for Iraq is going, someone in Iraq makes a specific effort to show the world otherwise…
I’m not going to argue the point of surge success or failure anymore, all I am going to do is post the story and honor our troops that are killed with a flag at half staff…
A roadside bomb struck an Iraqi army patrol near Baqouba, killing one soldier and wounding two, while another roadside bomb killed one civilian and wounded four others southeast of Baghdad, police officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.
Gunmen also opened fire on Sunni worshippers in a drive-by shooting following evening prayers late Thursday in the northern city of Kirkuk, killing at least three people and wounding four, police Col. Anwar Qadir said.
And I will continue to point out that in MY opinion this is still a civil war and is something the Iraqis and al-Malaki must work out for themselves, even if it was brought on by our deposition of Saddam, Oops…
Retired Navy Commander Jeff Huber over at Pen and Sword has a great piece concerning Iraqi success and/or failure, Iraq: Success Is Not No Failure, it points out the ‘double speak’ employed by Bush and illustrates exactly how the Iraqi insurgency is going to ‘follow us here’ and attack the USA…
Commander Huber he IS one hell of a writer, he’s a major contributor at Military.com and served his nation with loyalty and distinction and while our views on politics aren’t always in agreement I very much respect his spot on assessment of this debacle in Iraq…

Well said, I believe we are seeing some success with the surge on the ground…
However, it will be all for not if there is not a surge of political will within the Iraqi government to unf-k themselves, before this crap gets even worse and even more of our troops get killed.
“but every time the President gets on television bragging about how well HIS plan for Iraq is going, someone in Iraq makes a specific effort to show the world otherwise…”
You would think people would actually pay attention to that little factoid above but nooooooo.
Great article, Fred.
