Bush, Roh Have Testy Exchange at Summit
September 7th, 2007 . by TexasFredSYDNEY, Australia (AP) – President Bush’s talks with South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun ended on a sour note Friday not over the war in Iraq, but rather the Korean conflict that ended with a truce more than five decades ago.
As Bush began to wind down his stay at the Asia-Pacific summit, Roh challenged him to make a declaration to end the Korean War. That conflict ended in a truce in 1953, not a peace treaty, so the two sides technically remain at war.
The awkward exchange occurred during the first in a series of sit-downs that Bush had here with leaders from Pacific Rim nations. He also spoke Friday with Russian President Vladimir Putin and will meet on Saturday with the leaders of Japan, Indonesia and Australia. Protesters plan a march through the city on Saturday, a day after scuffles broke out between riot police and some demonstrators.
Bush’s talks with Roh focused on the six-nation negotiations to get North Korea to give up its nuclear ambitions. Soon after the mini diplomatic incident, Christopher Hill, the U.S. envoy handling the talks with Pyongyang, announced that nuclear experts from the U.S., China and Russia will travel to North Korea next week to survey nuclear facilities due to be shut down.
Why would it not surprise me for the USA to come away from this Asia-Pacific Summit with MORE enemies than we had going in??
And I have a serious question too, IF Kim does dismantle N. Korea’s nuclear program and IF a formal peace treaty replaces the truce of the 50’s and IF the Korean war officially comes to an end after all these years, can the S. Koreans stand on their own and take care of their nation or is that the example we are going to face in Iraq??
I don’t know about you but I really don’t want my grand kids to be sending their kids to fight in Iraq 50 years from now…
We fought a WAR, a real live WAR against the Japanese from 1941 until 1945 and today they are our strongest trading partner and a valuable ally, we fought in Korea, against a uniformed enemy, now there’s something we don’t have any more, but we KNEW who the enemy was, we can make N. Korea as valuable an ally as S. Korea I think, but it’s going to take bringing them into THIS century, and I’m not sure if we can afford to buy any friends right now, and buying N. Korea is what it will take to appease Kim and bring about an end to the Korean war, provided Bush doesn’t get us into a NEW one with his version of politics…
I have to wonder, did Bush think the war was officially ended by the truce?? Did someone forget to prep him on this??
I can see it now, Bush, talking to his advisers after this little dust up, “Hell boys, y’all shoulda told me we still had a war on our hands, I kinda lost it there for a minute, ya know, I mean, hell, I was a picturing Kim in my mind and forgot who I was talkin’ to, you know, they all really do look alike, now I have a head ache, did y’all bring any of that Head-On stuff, I need some on my forehead, and what in God’s name was that fella eatin’ out of that stone jar? It smelled like rotten fish and cabbage, he gimme a bite of it and dang, it was hotter than Crawford in August, made me think about pukin’ but I didn’t think Daddy would have appreciated me stealin’ his tactics…â€
“There was clearly something lost in translation,” National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said in a rushed e-mail to reporters.
“I really think the interpreter must not have conveyed the president’s comments entirely clearly,” Johndroe said.
Oh please… Lost in translation?? How do you explain all the verbal faux pas’ Bush has made when speaking to the American people?? The guy can’t put 3 structured sentences together and make a logical statement, lost in translation?? Lost in space is more like it…

Lost in translation my sorry butt!
Kim Chi …
The South won’t agree to an official end of the Korean War, that’s Kims paranoid world entirely and he sure won’t.
And the Japanese, good lord they hate each other.
Bush is a naive moron. More globalist stupidity.
So yea, coming away with even more enemies is about right.
some years ago an Air Force general was fired over comments he made about S. Korea and the reason we have troops in S. Korea. He said something like ‘the American forces are in S. Korea not as much to protect S. Korea as to keep the S. Koreans from going north.’
I suspect he was right but it was not politically correct to say so then nor now.
I have no doubt that the S. Koreans would like to see a united Korea..hell, why not? Afterall, there is now a united Germany..a union which damn near bankrupted W. Germany and is still causing problems because of a generation raised under socialism and still expects to get paid for doing nothing. I think the S. Korean economy is probably strong enough to absorb the woes of N. Korea but I have my doubts that the commies of the world will ever allow it.
Have to apologize for the idiot of a president that we have in South Korea.
They should abolish the 7 year term and have the ability to suspend/impeach stupidity….especially this Roh – he is an idiot’s dream come true.
It seemed Bush was clear to me. North Korea has to stop its nuclear program and then a peace treaty can be signed. What do you think Bush should have said?
As little as possible… He looks a lot smarter that way…
LOL, “How do you explain all the verbal faux pas’ Bush has made when speaking to the American people??” NUFF SAID!
We here in Bushland misunderstand, or can’t understand half the shit he comes up with, how is the S.K pres. supposed to?
Bush meant to say it, Bush just didn’t realize that it wouldn’t be received well, kind of like Iraq, Amnesty,Harriette Myers… the list goes on but I am tired.
It IS a CONSERVATIVE blog, Bush ISN’T a conservative… If ya can’t handle a healthy dose of the truth, if you want to give the SOB a free pass on everything, that’s fine but YOU are in the wrong place if you’re looking for a Bush love fest and it’s probably best if you just move on along…
I have been a serious, hardcore conservative all my life but I am NOT a Republican, and I will NOT kiss ANY presidents ass, Bush has messed this nation up worse than Jimmy Peanut did, and if MY saying that makes you not want to read my blog, great, click the red X up at the top and you won’t have to worry about what I think…
Is that too easy or what??
