Tancredo Says He Won’t Seek House Seat

DENVER (AP) – Republican presidential candidate Tom Tancredo said Monday he will not seek re-election to his Colorado seat in the House in 2008.

He will continue his long-shot bid for the White House.

The four-term lawmaker said illegal immigration, his core issue, now has national prominence and he doesn’t need to remain in Congress to promote it.

“The issue now has a life of its own and it doesn’t need one particular person to champion it,” he said.

“I feel my job, my task, has been completed. And I am very much at peace with the idea that if I’m not elected president then I won’t be running” for another term in Congress, he said.

His decision was first reported on the Rocky Mountain News Web site.

Tancredo, 61, is a former teacher and real estate developer who served in the Colorado state legislature in the late 1970s. He was elected to the House in 1988 in a district that includes the Denver suburbs.

He has polled in the low single digits in the crowded GOP presidential race.

Tom, as far as immigration, and your fearless fight against the illegals is concerned, YOU are one of the very best, of that there is NO doubt, but the USA is faced with a lot more problems than just border issues and illegal immigration, and truthfully, you’re seen as a one trick pony, I hate to sound so cold, but facts are facts…

Perhaps you need to be the Secretary of HSA, I think that would be a marvelous position for your no nonsense approach to the security of this nation, I still think you’re a great guy, but I just can’t get behind you as a presidential candidate, and I have tried too…

All the best to Tom Tancredo in his continued run at the White House, but I sincerely believe the gentleman from Colorado is fighting a losing battle on that particular front…

  1. GUYK says:

Unfortunately that is his image but the record shows that he has been fighting the RINOs in the House. He has consistently voted against the RINO pork bills
and doesn’t appear to be in bed with the religious right wing..his fiscal conservatism and stance on illegal aliens is enough for me to support him..plus he is smart enough to recognize a third world city when he sees one.

But I have thrown my support to Thompson because I think he is the best with the chance to win. But if Fred or Tancredo one doesn’t get the nomination I may just sit this one out. It is time that the GOP realizes that without the neo libertarian vote they cannot win and from where I sit the rest of the GOP pack are dim-a-crits who call themselves republicans..kinda like Bush

  2. He’s making a big mistake. He needs to KEEP his house seat!

  3. I haven’t spoken to Tom for a while, but I can assure any and all, that when I do. I will ask him to continue to stay in Congress. I mean heck! After the weirdo Perlmutter was elected, I formally seceded, and told Tom that he was now my Representative! :)
