Giuliani 2nd Pick of Many Conservatives

WASHINGTON (AP) – Conservatives who aren’t backing Rudy Giuliani’s presidential bid are turning to him in strong numbers when asked to name their second choice, an Associated Press-Ipsos poll showed Thursday.

In the latest evidence of the former New York mayor’s strength among the Republican Party’s right wing, one-third of the conservatives supporting his rivals made him their pick when asked to choose an alternative, considerably more than anyone else.

Overall among Republicans and GOP-leaning voters, Giuliani is the favored candidate of 29 percent, followed by former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson’s 19 percent, this week’s AP-Ipsos poll showed. Arizona Sen. John McCain was next at 13 percent, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney had 12 percent and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee had 10 percent.

The poll, released a day after Giuliani’s endorsement by televangelist Pat Robertson, showed the New Yorker holding his own among the reddest of red-state voters. He was slightly ahead of Thompson among Southerners, and even with him among white men, married men, older men, evangelicals and conservatives.

Personally, Guiliani isn’t in MY top 4, I think the guy is a RINO more than any RINO running for the Oval Office, I see Rudy as a very well disguised ultra libber that has somehow pulled the wool over the eyes of some very weak minded or incredibly desperate voters…

Giuliani asks voters to Focus On My Record, Not Kerik, that’s a gambit I don’t know that I would want to push if I was Rudy, for one thing, Kerik IS a part of Rudy’s record, that is an indisputable fact of the matter, and for me, as a CONSERVATIVE, I am totally opposed to Rudy because of his homosexual rights stance, his abortion stance and his gun grabbing agenda, and I personally don’t know how any REAL Republican or Conservative, not to mention CHRISTIAN Conservatives, could support this individual given those opinions on 3 of the biggest hot button topics facing the USA today…

Giuliani, assailed by some on the right for his moderate stances on abortion, gays and guns, was the second choice of 33 percent of the conservatives who did not make him their top pick. An additional 19 percent took McCain as their backup selection, while Romney got 15 percent, Thompson 14 percent and Huckabee 13 percent.

I am seriously concerned by some the field the Republicans have offered up, I don’t have ANY use for Giuliani, I mean NONE, so much so that I would consider several other options before voting for Giuliani, at least with a Dem you KNOW what to expect, Giuliani is a wild card at best, I think McCain is a RINO as well, a lot closer to the Dems than he is to the Repubs, Thompson, Hunter and Tancredo bring the most to the table as far as I am concerned, at least from an All Conservative stand point, any combination of the 3 would make an excellent base for the executive branch and I believe they would be good for America…

I know we’re still a long ways from the nomination conventions but I strongly urge ALL of you that consider yourself to be REAL Republicans, Conservatives and Christians to work diligently to STOP Giuliani and his campaign dead in it’s tracks, I don’t care what he says in his attempt to become President or how he has supposedly changed, he is pandering, he is Pro Homosexuals, Pro Abortion and Pro Gun Control, and for any REAL Conservative, that should be more than enough reasons to dump him…

It is mind boggling how this man has mustered so much support from conservatives, mind boggling considering everything you’ve pointed out or the hot button topics.

If Rudy was to get elected then conservatism will be redefined as it relates to the republican party and true conservatism will suffer greatly. It will take a STRONG 3rd party, true conservative, candidate to resurrect it’s principles IMO.

You are right on target with your post. How can any true conservative consider voting for Rudy? It is painfully obvious that he is pandering. He wants the voters to “just look at his record”. I have and am not impressed at all. Issues such as pro gay, pro abortion, and pro gun control are not what a conservative wants to see in a candidate.

Rudy is a Republican in the pre-Barry Goldwater sense. He’s a Mcgovernite/Rockefeller Republican and if he would become the GOP’s candidate in 2008 it would be the final end to all the good that was done with the Reagan Revolution in the GOP.

That being said, I wouldn’t like it, but I’ll vote him over Hillary “Karl Marx” Clinton. I’d just hate having to once again choose the lesser of two evils.

  4. Well well well…

    Folks are actually waking up!

Tom Tancredo is the only one that suports, in mind, body, and soul what the people here want. Figure it out…

    Well Said Fred!

I can’t believe he has held the lead this long. It is like a ship that wont sink. He is full of so many holes and hauling so much weight from his past he has got to go down. When?

The more I learn about his poor planning and motivations the more shocked I become with the polls. Between him and Hillary it is hard to tell which would be worse for our nation.

Sadly, we Conservatives will probably get what the RNC pushes down our throat. Giuliani is their man. The MSM will probably also give him some support in the primaries then turn against him in the general.

My first choice is Duncan Hunter, but his chances are almost nil.

I do not want to vote for Rudy or McCain. I am afraid the choice will be stay home or give Hillary a free ride. Damn, Damn, Damn! Another less of two evils.

  7. I’m still going here: anyone but a Demorat, anyone but Clinton.

Let’s face it fellow conservatives, the GOP has shut us out! The Republican Party is no longer the Party of Reagan.

I am not going to vote for Giuliani… under any circumstances… period! If that means another Clinton in the White House, then so be it. I am simply not willing to compromise my self respect by voting for someone who does not represent my core belief(s).

Look, if we conservatives are to ever have any clout, in national politics, again… we are going to have to pull out of the Republican Party and form a a Conservative Party. We may not be strong enough to win elections but we WILL be strong enough to SWING them one way or the other and we will be courted by the other political parties as never before.

We need a Conservative Party and we need it NOW!

    Best regards to all!

Longstreet, I have had this same discussion with folks that I consider to be very good bloggers and quite intelligent as well, I REFUSE to vote for the lesser of 2 evils, EVER again, and Giuliani vs Clinton is nothing but one raving moonbat asshole vs another raving moonbat asshole…

If the RNC can’t see that, they have surely lost their usefulness and need to be renamed The NEW Democratic party…

Anyone that can’t see that Rudy is nothing more than a DEM in disguise is looking at a different Rudy than I am, and as much as I totally HATE H & B Clinton both, I honestly don’t think SHE will be any worse than Rudy, at least with the evil bitch, we KNOW what to expect, as I have tried, so far in vain, to convey to others is this, Giuliani is a lying no good useless SOB, a RINO and a total snake in the grass…
