Bombs Strike Baghdad and Northern Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) – Bombers struck a pet market in central Baghdad and a police checkpoint in the northern city of Mosul on Friday, killing 28 people in two of the deadliest attacks in weeks.

The first blast occurred before 9 a.m. when a bomb hidden in a box of small birds exploded as Iraqis were strolling past animal stalls and bird cages at Baghdad’s al-Ghazl market. The market had recently re-emerged as a popular venue as security has increased in the capital.

Police and hospital officials said at least 15 people were killed and 56 wounded, including four policemen. Another 13 people were killed in the Mosul attack, police said.

The Baghdad bombing was the deadliest in the Iraqi capital since Sept. 9, when a suicide car bomber killed 15 people in Sadr City.

Bombs Strike Baghdad and Northern Iraq

I guess it’ll piss off some of the Iraqi Freedom & Bush Bot sites but there is only one thing I can say about the death toll in this attack, I am so happy that there were NO U.S. casualties in this round of violence…

Iraq is still a civil war, it’s in a lull at the moment, or was, and Iraq will continue to be a civil war for as long as there are Sunnis, Shiites and Kurds and all have their own groups of insurgent Islamic moonbats that believe they must drive their point home with a cowardly attack and bombing such as this…

“Today, the market was very crowded and we were happy about that,” said Amir Aziz, a 22-year-old pigeon vendor who was wounded by shrapnel. “The Iraqi security officials have deceived us by their statements that the situation is 80 percent better. People believed them and began to go out thinking that it would be safe. I think that the situation will become worse again.”

I don’t know that Iraqi or any other officials have deceived anyone per se, I believe the insurgents aren’t stupid, I believe they have allowed the violence to subside and have waited for the Iraqi people to become more accustomed to a somewhat normal way of life and once that happened, they struck…

The Iraqi military spokesman in Baghdad urged patience, insisting that security forces were gaining the upper hand but acknowledging that “pockets of terrorists” still exist.

“People have to stay alert and continue cooperating with us so as not to give the terrorists any opportunities to carry out such cowardly operations,” Brig. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi said.

Yes, there are pockets of terrorists still in Iraq, and it is my belief that these are deep pockets, the insurgents are quite patient, they will wait until the time is right for them, and the statement about staying alert, I have long said, there are everyday Iraqis that KNOW who and where the Insurgents are, and for whatever reason they won’t come forward and give the much needed information concerning them…

I know that Iraq is not being hit with nearly as much violence as it was a few months back, and that is wonderful news, but don’t for one minute believe that we have seen the end of the bombings or U.S. troop deaths, we haven’t…
