22 Die in Suicide Attacks in Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) – A woman with explosives strapped to her body attacked the office of a Sunni group that had turned against al-Qaida in Iraq – one of two suicide bombings in Diyala province northeast of Baghdad that left at least 22 people dead Friday.

An Iraqi official claimed the woman was seeking revenge for her two sons who were killed fighting for al-Qaida.

The two brazen attacks were the latest in a series of al-Qaida assaults against members of the new “awakening groups” – mostly Sunnis including former insurgents who have begun cooperating with the Americans to rid their communities of extremists.

The first attack occurred at midmorning in Muqdadiyah when a woman detonated explosives in front of the building housing the office of the 1920 Revolution Brigade, a Sunni insurgent group whose members in the area switched sides this year and joined the fight against al-Qaida.

Police chief Brig. Gen. Mohammed al-Tamimi said 15 people were killed and 20 wounded. U.S. officials put the toll at 12 dead and 17 wounded.

I am so glad the violence is down by 60%, at least according to most government reports coming out now, that’s a reassuring thing, and we not losing troops at anywhere near the recent numbers before the surge, so, I have to say, the surge is working, at least to some degree, Baghdad is a lot safer than in past months and years, maybe we should have surged right from the start and forgotten the idea of conducting a PC war, instead of just deposing Saddam and letting the Iraqis hold an election and take control, things would have been a lot better if we had actually allowed the troops to do then what they are doing now…

But no matter how successful the surge has been, as this story points out, the violence hasn’t completely gone away, it’s subsided to some degree, but it’s still there, not at the level of a full blown civil war, but it’s not going away any time soon, as long as you have people that are willing to die in a suicide bombing, as long as you have religious and political factions that seek to settle their differences with a bomb instead of civilized negotiations, you will have violence like this in Islamic controlled nations…

Can you imagine that type of thing taking place in America??

It could if the Muslims became a viable voting block in the USA, and if you think the fights between Dems and Repubs are nasty, forget that, we may not like each other too much but we don’t debate with bombs…
