(CBS) The Republican frontrunner for president, Sen. John McCain, promoted his conservative bona fides on Face The Nation, while also admitting that, should he win the GOP nomination, he would likely not win the general election without the backing of the party’s conservative base.
He also refuted claims by his opponent, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, that the Arizona Senator was not a true conservative.
“First of all, if you examine my record, it’s more conservative than Governor Romney’s is,” he told host Bob Schieffer. “I went to Iowa and told them that I was against subsidies for ethanol. He was for them. I went to Michigan and said the old automobile jobs aren’t coming back; new ones are, but old ones aren’t. He wants to give them $20 billion, to Detroit, over four years. We went to South Carolina – same kind of deal. So look, I am proud of my conservative record, and I will run on it.”
“We carried Florida in a Republican-only primary,” he said. “We got very large percentage of the ‘conservative’ vote. And I’m confident that once they examine my record and as we unite against a common opponent, we’ll do fine with that.”

McCain: I Need Conservatives To Win It All
You know, McCain isn’t as dumb as he looks, he’s correct too, without the Conservatives of this nation, he won’t even SEE the Oval Office unless the President invites him over for coffee.
I am going to make this crystal clear for ALL to see, and I don’t care how many McCainiacs or Republicrats I piss off by printing it either, John McCain is NOT a Conservative, he’s not even close to being a Conservative, McCain is a RINO, a FAKE Republican, plain and simple, McCain is a lot closer to the Dems and their platform than he ever was to the Repubs, until recently that is.
As of late the RNC is a of a lot closer to the Dems than I am comfortable with, and McCain IS the standard bearer for the RNC.
I am NOT terribly enthusiastic about Mitt Romney as the RNC offering for POTUS but, in MY opinion, stacked up next to McCain, Romney IS the better choice, despite all of his weak points, and he is, after all, that candidate I hate, the lesser of 2 evils, but IF Romney is the Republican candidate for President, I will support him in that run because we are never going to get that perfect candidate, and Romney is far from perfect but he IS the best offer on the table at this time.
And IF McCain is the RNC choice to run for POTUS, I WILL do a write in, a protest vote if you will, and I’ll support a Tom Tancredo/Duncan Hunter ticket in that write in.
The RNC must receive a message from ALL Conservatives, and that message is this: we will NOT support a poor choice for POTUS and back your offering simply because he/she has an (R) behind their name, no more 2nd best for America.
It’s time for us to stand and be heard, America 1st or we take a ‘do-over’ and the powers that be will NOT like the outcome of that battle.

This right here should tell you who the right candidate is on the GOP side.
Bush will not Endorse Romney.
Romney’s the man.
Who in their right mind mind would want an Endorsement from George W. Bush.
If for some reason GWB Endorses McCain then you know that he is not a Conservative.
I think I made it clear enough what I think of McCain in a previous post.
I don’t know what more can be said. Has America really been dumbed down this far?
Maybe this is simply an all out sales promation by our leftist media. They can’t afford to let Romney get any Air Time.
I, too, will not vote for McCain. McCain is a liar. He says he gets it about immigration and taxes, but he is lying. I am voting for Romney. I have been torn about how I would vote if McCain gets the nomination, but after reading your post, I am doing a write in vote for Tom Tancredoa nd Duncan Hunter, also. So count me in, Fred!
When Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Ann Coulter, three Conservatives who usually support the party line all say they can’t support McCain, then you know he’s no Conservative.
Yup…as long as Bush is against Romney, I’m all for him.
Nope, this is serious issue, and Fred, I agree. But as one commenter said on my blog, it’s now us who are ‘in name only’. The Republican party is no longer us, the conservatives, it’s them, the moderates and leftists, who would rather compromise their principles for a win, than stand firm on conviction.
Dang, I hope that came out right. I’m so frustrated with the whole lot of ‘em, my fingers/brain tends to knot up.
My dog is more conservative than McCain, and worse yet, we’re canadian!
I’m worried for you folks down there. It’s probably too late for this upcoming election, but lets hope someone comes along who can pull the republicans back to their roots and a winning position.
I have made my position very clear on McCain, I am grateful for his service to our nation, his steadfast support of the Military, BUT THAT’S IT!
When folks that the Republicans hold as high priests of the Republican party denounce McCain, that should wake people up, yet the “R” for “R” sake crowd doesn’t listen, they talk bad about them and put it off as rhetoric. That to me is the epitome of hypocrisy, if you post things agreeing with Ann, Rush and Hannity, and now post things about how wrong they are? Can’t have it both ways, these are the same folks and they have had these positions all along.
He won’t get all the Conservatives, plain and simple. He’ll sway the Independents, mostly. This Tuesday will clearly reveal if McCain has REAL momentum or “media” momentum.

P.S.
Dave wonders who can pull us back? I submit Tom McClintock from Fornicalia. Bushwack may be familiar with the gentleman — the smartest economist in politics.
Here McCain has a woman thrown out of his Town Hall meeting for pressing that he answere a man’s question about Illegal’s. You can hear one woman say how they paid to be in the meeting. Listen how McCain’s aids talk to the “little people” at the meeting.

You watch, if McCain grows in power he’ll try to shut down blogs like this along with Conservative Talk Radio which are against him.
BobF: much as I hate to say or think it, if McCain does step into the White House, he’s sufficiently a grudge-holding bully to fear that possibility.

Not sure I’ll even vote for Romney, on Election Day but he is ONE HELL OF A LOT BETTER than McCain and that’s for damn sure.
Frankly I’ve had it out the keister with Republican’s running as “conservatives” when the only thing about them that is conservative is maybe their choice of neck tie.
That’s disgusting!! Seems to me not ‘nough time was spent w/ McCain’s dad behind the shed, with a belt. He’s being anti-human.
Conservatives are beginning to amaze me in their inability to see what’s really at stake here. This election is about more than McCain and his inability to follow conservative principals.
How is handing the whole country over to far left liberals a suitable alternative to McCain? What principal is that?
There is a serious difference between McCain and a pure-bread liberal who is bent on destroying ALL conservative values permanently.
Today’s liberal is not like the Bill Clinton’s Presidency. It’s moved radically left… Clinton is now considered a moderated, and loosing it’s power because it’s not radically liberal enough.
The Democratic candidate that is surging now, Obama, is bottom of the barrel liberal. He is about to take power, unless conservatives stop fighting and get serious.
This would give liberals what they will treat as a clear sign from America that is it ready to move sharply to the left. Not slightly to the left.
Cherry picking our candidate is exactly what got us INTO this mess, and if conservatives aren’t careful, they will allow our country spiral out of control.
There is no such thing as a quick recovery from 4 years of radical liberalism unchecked. We may be facing what will take years and years of damage to undo. What’s more, there’s no guarantee that it WILL be undone. Have conservatives completely forgotten Roe v. Wade and other extremely important issues?
Questioning McCain was right and highly useful for a time and a season. Many of us wish we had acted sooner to support Romney or Huck…. But staying home on election day allows liberals a pass to capture all THREE branches of Government. Our kids deserve better out of us.
I’m not asking anyone to sacrifice their own belief or convictions, but we have a serious problem here that requires that we do everything we can to minimize the damage this election can cause to our society.
I’d rather have 50% of McCains ear, than 0% of a liberals ear.
Give it some thought, friends.
Danny, YOU are full of shit, McCain IS one of the libbers you so desperately don’t want the nation handed too… YOU are the one that needs to wake the hell up… McCain will mess this nation up as surely as Hillary or Obamalamadingdong…
‘Cherry picking’ our candidates is exactly what we MUST do, NEVER settle for less than the best, and it’s people like you that are giving this nation away…
And BTW, one more time of trying to SPAM my site with your links and you won’t be ON this site again… OK??
