Saddam to Be Tried for Genocide in August
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Saddam Hussein and six members of his former regime will be put on trial for a 1980s campaign that killed an estimated 100,000 Kurds and saw thousands of their villages razed, the Iraqi High Tribunal announced Tuesday.
The trial, to begin Aug. 21, will be the second for Saddam and top officials of his Baath Party regime. More trials over crimes committed during his 23-year dictatorship are also expected.
The case involves Saddam’s alleged role in Operation Anfal, Arabic for “spoils of war.” The regime launched the 1987-1988 operation to crush independence-minded Kurdish militias and clear the Kurdish population along the sensitive Iranian border area. Saddam had accused Kurdish militias of ties to Iran.
Saddam and the six others face genocide charges over the campaign, which left thousands of Kurdish villages razed and their inhabitants either killed or displaced.

I’m afraid the Iraqi’s are going to blow this one all to hell and back and I’m wondering if Saddam will be convicted of ANYTHING…
The deposing of Saddam and his regime was never a problem for me, it was something that NEEDED to be done, he is, without a doubt, an evil thug that killed at will and with total impunity…
Now, there’s an opportunity at hand to square the books, but it’s truly in the hands of the Iraqi people and their ‘justice system’…
If they make the wrong decision, then we’ve been losing troops in vain because if they make the wrong decision pertaining to Saddam, the dictatorship will rise again, and sometimes I have to wonder, is the ‘fix’ already in??
Does Saddam KNOW he’s not going to die for his crimes??
Or is he simply a demented megalomaniac who’s sick mind still spins fantasies of grandeur??
