New Orleans repeating deadly levee mistakes

New Orleans repeating deadly levee mistakes

NEW ORLEANS - Signs are emerging that history is repeating itself in the Big Easy, still healing from Katrina: People have forgotten a lesson from four decades ago and believe once again that the federal government is constructing a levee system they can prosper behind.

In a yearlong review of levee work here, The Associated Press has tracked a pattern of public misperception, political jockeying and legal fighting, along with economic and engineering miscalculations since Katrina, that threaten to make New Orleans the scene of another devastating flood.

Dozens of interviews with engineers, historians, policymakers and flood zone residents confirmed many have not learned from public policy mistakes made after Hurricane Betsy in 1965, which set the stage for Katrina; many mistakes are being repeated.

“People forget, but they cannot afford to forget,” said Windell Curole, a Louisiana hurricane and levee expert. “If you believe you can’t flood, that’s when you increase the risk of flooding. In New Orleans, I don’t think they talk about the risk.”

The people of New Orleans are not too smart sometime, at least that’s my opinion on the matter. Even if the people of New Orleans think I a NOT entitled to an opinion on their fair city simply because my screen name is TexasFred.

I am NOT joking, that is the rationale offered by many on the NOLA.com site, “You’re from Texas, why do you care what we do or how we do it?” and honestly, I considered a name change but LouisianaFred or CajunFred just didn’t ring my bell, ya know?

But according to the thought process that is New Orleans, I surely can’t have a legitimate opinion of New Orleans and it’s maladies. Never mind the fact that I was born in Louisiana, or that we lived in New Orleans and south Louisiana when I was a lot younger. Never mind the fact that my family goes back to at least the early 1800’s in Louisiana history. That doesn’t matter to the *welfare slugs* and the narrow minded, pompous asses that believe New Orleans to be *bullet proof* when the next hurricane comes in and finishes what Katrina started.

There are some very simple FACTS in play regarding New Orleans, but the simple minds OF New Orleans just can’t seem to grasp them.

ScienceDaily: New Orleans - The New Atlantis?
BBC NEWS Americas New Orleans ’sinking even faster’

And even given these facts and predictions, the U.S. government continues to pump billions of OUR tax dollars into their attempt at saving what is, truly, a lost cause. And after the rude arrogance exhibited by the people OF New Orleans and NOLA.com combined with the corruption and inept Democratic leadership that IS New Orleans, I don’t care if the whole damned place falls off in the Gulf.

I just don’t want to see any more of our tax dollars wasted on that stink hole.

House apologizes for slavery

July 29th, 2008 . by TexasFred

WASHINGTON - The House on Tuesday issued an unprecedented apology to black Americans for the wrongs committed against them and their ancestors who suffered under slavery and Jim Crow segregation laws.

“Today represents a milestone in our nation’s efforts to remedy the ills of our past,” said Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, D-Mich., chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus.

The resolution, passed by voice vote, was the work of Tennessee Democrat Steve Cohen, the only white lawmaker to represent a majority black district. Cohen faces a formidable black challenger in a primary face-off next week.

Congress has issued apologies before — to Japanese-Americans for their internment during World War II and to native Hawaiians for the overthrow of the Hawaiian kingdom in 1893. In 2005, the Senate apologized for failing to pass anti-lynching laws.

Five states have issued apologies for slavery, but past proposals in Congress have stalled, partly over concerns that an apology would lead to demands for reparations — payment for damages.

House apologizes for slavery

I say this in ALL sincerity, I hope ALL the recently freed slaves feel a lot better about their freedom now.

Wait, what?? An apology?? For slavery? For something that this nation had the good sense to abolished in 1863??

President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, as the nation approached its third year of bloody civil war. The proclamation declared “that all persons held as slaves” within the rebellious states “are, and henceforward shall be free.” SOURCE

I know there are some out there that are getting a *warm and fuzzy* from this one, but I, for one, see no reason, I mean NONE, that ANY apology should have been issued for something that this nation abolished 145 years ago.

I see no need to apologize for something that my ancestors may have done, it’s a hollow gesture at most, and likely will lead the empowerment crowd to go ahead and seek the reparations they feel they so richly deserve, for something they have NEVER known, only something they have read about.

This is a total waste of time and effort by our Congress, and only serves to show once again that we are not ruled by common sense, but by political correctness.

Government Waste?? Play Ball Mi Amigos!!

February 14th, 2008 . by TexasFred
Ya know, Dirty Harry was right, a good man knows his limitations, and my area of expertise is NOT the financial world, I have never claimed it was, but I do understand waste, the wanton waste of OUR tax dollars, money that we all work so hard to pay in, and I have to wonder how can the Senators and Congressmen of this nation can justify such waste??

One good thing that came out this morning was this, Trade Deficit Falls After 5 Record Years, that’s a bit of a surprise and even to my business challenged mind it’s a good thing, but then you turn around and a story like this pops up, The White House wants a $1.4 billion stimulus/national security package for Mexico

Now I can’t prove nor disprove the above link, it comes from a site that has been known to be VERY hysterical in it’s reporting, reactionary may be the best word, in any case, if it is true, that’s a waste of OUR dollars, we can’t even secure our own border with Mexico but supposedly we’re going to give them almost a BILLION and a half of OUR dollars to secure their southern border?? What’s wrong with this picture??

And then you turn around again and all you see is MORE waste, when did it become the business of the U.S. Congress what a baseball player did to his own body something like 7 years ago?? The story says Clemens Takes Lumps, Denies Accusations and I suppose that if your a big MLB fan that’s a good deal but how many millions of OUR dollars were spent so that this little theater could be played out for the American public??

Doesn’t the Congress of the United States have something better to do than waste their time and OUR money on the personal business of Roger Clemens, business that if it should be addressed, should be addressed by Major League Baseball?? Congress needs to work very hard at putting their own house in order don’t you think??

Waste of OUR tax dollars is a never ending endeavor for Congress and the Senate, we are an open checkbook for these clowns and they take full advantage of us at every opportunity, and here is another prime example of that waste, Senator Arlen Specter, R-Pa., wants to know why NFL destroyed Patriots spy tapes, again I ask, when did the actions of sports teams or their players become the business of the U.S. Senate or Congress?? Specter’s time would be better spent dealing with the issues of this nation in MY opinion…

But never fear, just as the worst president in recent U.S. history is telling the nation that everything is OK, the chairman of the Fed tells us that it just isn’t so, Bernanke Says Economic Outlook Is Worse and signaled a readiness to keep on lowering a key interest rate to shore things up”…

The Fed can keep lowering interest rates for just so long, and there’s only so far the rates can go down, they are so low now that retired folks, and those that make a living on investments are already losing their shirts, and the housing market still sucks…

For some time I have tried to tell people that George W. Bush was a failure and that his entire administration was a failure, now, here we are, on the brink of a major recession, and we’re still pouring BILLIONS into Iraq and other regions of the world, it seems that Bush may well be defining that legacy he so desperately wants, he can be known throughout history as the president that saved the world and destroyed the USA in doing so…

Social Security Going Up by 2.3 Percent

October 17th, 2007 . by TexasFred

WASHINGTON (AP) - Come January, Social Security benefits for nearly 50 million Americans are going up 2.3 percent, the smallest increase in four years. It will mean an extra $24 per month in the average check, the government announced Wednesday.

The cost of living adjustment means that the monthly benefit for the typical retired worker in 2008 will go from $1,055 currently to $1,079 next year.

The adjustment, announced by the Social Security Administration, will go to more than 54 million Americans. Nearly 50 million receive Social Security benefits and the rest get Supplemental Security Income payments aimed at helping the poor.

The 2.3 percent increase is the smallest since a 2.1 percent rise in 2004. It compares to an increase of 3.3 percent last year and a jump of 4.1 percent in 2006, which had been the biggest advance in 15 years.

Social Security Going Up by 2.3 Percent

Well, isn’t THAT special?? We spend BILLIONS in Iraq for a people that don’t want us there, we send BILLIONS to other nations to feed and care for their hungry or homeless, and to help provide health care for foreigners but our own retired and disabled get a 2.3% increase in their benefits, I am almost moved to tears by the generosity of the federal government…

For folks my age and older Social Security is what we were told was our retirement options, we didn’t have all the super-duper financial advice and electronic advantages that the young folks have today, we weren’t encouraged to do IRA’s and set up our own retirement like kids are today, we worked jobs for years and took the company retirement or service retirement and at 65 we expect Social Security to kick in and pay US back for all the years we payed in to it…

And God help the poor guy that is on Social Security disability and that’s the only source of income, you make just enough to survive and too much to get food stamps and welfare…

And for any asshat that thinks Social Security is a hand out or welfare, think again, if you went to work today, YOU paid Social Security tax, it’s YOUR money, it’s MY money, it’s OUR money and we’re never going to see the bulk of it back to us, welfare is for the no working lazy bastards that want everyone to do it for them, the entitled that think they are OWED something, the welfare baby makers, the people that have kids one right after the other because they KNOW that every kid will get them another WELFARE check, that is NOT what Social Security is all about, Social Security recipients EARNED their check, by God, they WORKED for it…

Social Security funds are robbed to fund other projects I suspect, they have to fund Iraq from somewhere, and what the hell, Seniors say cat food isn’t too bad with a bit of onion and salt, Bon Apetite’…
