Pizza man delivers shot to armed robbers

A pizza delivery man found himself forced to use his concealed gun to protect himself Tuesday night when two men allegedly attempted to rob him at gunpoint in the 100 block of Booker Street, according to a report from Lt. David Young, Lufkin Police Department spokesman.

Police arrested Johnx R. Greer, 18, at 1:16 a.m. Wednesday on a charge of aggravated robbery in the incident. Police are still investigating the identity of the other suspect.

The delivery man, who has a license to carry a handgun, told police he walked up to the door of the house and rang the doorbell, but the house was vacant. The two men came from behind the side of the house, pointing handguns at him and demanded his cell phone and money while he was delivering a pizza to a house at 9:05 p.m. Tuesday, according to the report. The delivery man drew a .22 caliber Derringer and fired two shots at Greer.

Greer and the other man fled on foot, according to the report. The delivery man was not injured, but Greer was arrested after being treated at a local hospital for a gunshot wound to the back. Greer is currently being held at the Angelina County Jail on a $100,000 bond.

I just LOVE a FEEL GOOD story, and this is one of them, in almost every respect.

The negative side you ask?? Why, it’s almost a certainty that Papa John’s will fire the guy. I don’t have ANY solid information on that, it IS speculation on MY part, but I would be totally surprised if they didn’t!

I had a friend that was going to school, working on his Masters in Education while holding down a full time teaching job and pulling a 10P - 6A shift at a local convenience store that shall remain unnamed because I have never spent a penny in one since, I can live without a *Big Gulp*… Uh, Ooops…

Anyway, my friend was getting robbed, an armed robber, he bent over like he was going to open the safe and the robber was briefly distracted, my friend came up with his .357 and punched this SOB’s ticket for him.

The police are happy, one less asshole on the street, my buddy is happy, he didn’t get robbed and lived to tell a good story but the corporate headquarters was seriously pissed off, they fired him. It seems they had this corporate policy about *giving in* to robbers and carrying a weapon was completely OUT of the equation.

My buddy lost his 2nd job, had no trouble getting a new one, he was a local hero of sorts, went on to get his Masters and is still a wonderful guy and a great Conservative educator.

This pizza guy will get a new job if he gets fired, but IF Papa John’s doesn’t fire him, I’ll eat Papa John’s pizza exclusively from now on!!

EDIT TO ADD: Info regarding this being a delivery person for Papa John’s Pizza is HERE, the link had rolled off the front page and I had to dig a bit!!

EDIT TO ADD: Lufkin Police have arrested a second man in connection to the attempted robbery of a pizza delivery man Tuesday evening.

    Damn, only a .22?

I prefer a .45, but they do make a little to much noise, and a bigger hole.

Yep I like Pappa Johns Pizza but keep us up to date on this, if they fire him I’ll be visiting our local franchise and asking him about it.. He better give the right answer or we boycott too.

Domino’s pulled the same crap with one of their guys a few years back.
    Haven’t had Domino’s since.
    Usually wasn’t that good anyway.

Papa Johns Pizza is way to salty for me, but if they keep this guy on, they got a customer for life!

So un-PC to call this a feel good story, but it totally is a feel good story. Some lib will tell you this story would have been better if the pizza man had handed over the money and let the police do their job (then no one gets shot), but I say the story wold be better if the pizza man had put both of these dirtbags out of their misery and saved the state the expense of housing them for the next 25 years!

Problem is now days you just don’t hand over the money, you also get shot in the process because they don’t want any witnesses. That pizza guy is one of my hero’s.

I can see the pizza guy carrying a .22 derringer because it’s easy to conceal and his employer probably forbids employees carrying guns. But, the dirtballs also being armed with .22’s sends up flags with me as a .22 is also an assassins gun. Loaded with a somewhat potent round like a CCI Stinger, the .22 can take a person out easily is shot in the right place, plus it’s quiet compared to larger caliber rounds.

PrivatePigg, it’s hard to put em DOWN with a .22 derringer… The guy was seriously under armed…

Fred - Damn that law that doesn’t allow the pizza man to sling a high-powered hunting rifle over this shoulder, especially when heading into the “rougher” neighborhoods.

Or maybe the pizza man could have a heavily-armed driver waiting at the car “covering” the pizza man with that same high-powered rifle (and scope!) as he heads up to the door. “You got my back? I’m going in!”

In Texas you can carry a hunting rifle, but it’s kind of awkward, a Hi-Capacity Hi-Power handgun, on the other hand, beats a .22 derringer ALL to hell and back…

That was a desperation piece, a .22 derringer, if the guy was serious he’d have been better armed, he had a CHL, he knew what he could carry, and since he WAS carrying, I am guessing he knew the risk as well…

My guess is, the .22 was easier to hide from the boss…

Years ago (when I was lived in a more gun friendly state), I used to carry a small derringer that was sewn into a wallet. The wallet had a hole cut into it for a trigger. The idea was if you handed over your wallet you’d just hand over a few slugs too. Fortunately I never had to use it, and eventually traded it and few other guns for a truck.

    Good times.

Three cheers for the delivery man! An armed society is a polite society. And a much safer one. Even the drugged out junkies start getting cautious when people start shooting instead of meekly rolling over.

But imho the biggest problem is not the delivery guy’s job (I’m betting he gets offers for a lot better paying positions!) The problem is that stories like this bring the ant-gun nuts out in force and they crank up the pressure on legislatures to pass even worse gun laws than the ones on the books! And legislators do so love to please everyone that the tendency is to pass “something” that isn’t as restrictive as the bambi lovers want … but that nibbles away just a little more of our freedoms. There are the occasional huge disasters like Obama. But mostly the problems come in nibbles. Enough nibbles is the same as a huge disaster.

    Oh, and Pat … a .38 is a good compromise :-)
