Whataburger: No ‘open carry’ in our restaurants despite new Texas law

The president of Whataburger said in a statement that patrons will continue to be prohibited from openly carrying firearms inside the company’s nearly 800 restaurants.

Preston Atkinson, the San Antonio-based company’s president and CEO, said patrons who are licensed to carry concealed weapons will still be allowed to do so, but visible carrying of firearms is prohibited in the statement, which was published on the company’s site July 2. SOURCE

At 1st glance some folks were going OFF on What-A-Burger until they read the part about *concealed carry* being perfectly alright as long as you held a license.

I’m good with that, you see, I am NOT a big proponent of *open carry*, I mean, if that’s what you want to do, OK by me, but I prefer to have surprise on my side as opposed to making myself the 1st target in the place.

After reading the reasons WHY What-A-Burger stated for the *no open carry* policy I can’t argue so much as one word against them.

A number of businesses, as well as police officers, have been targeted by gun rights activists in Texas and throughout the nation in recent years. The activists would often film themselves carrying a rifle over their shoulder and gauge and often combat the response of staff or officers.

These demonstrations resulted in a number of businesses, including Starbucks, Jack in the Box, Chipotle, Sonic, Chili’s and Target, banning firearms on their property

You can thank morons like Kory Watkins for the reasons some businesses are not allowing open carry or concealed carry. Watkins, a mental midget, walks around like he’s some kind of a badass with an AK-47 on his shoulder as he threatens Texas Legislators with violence if they don’t pass OPEN CARRY for Texas. He has done far more harm than good in Texas.

You may remember this piece a while back: Stop Helping us Kory Watkins. Watkins and his ilk damned near sunk any chance of open carry through their ridiculous and terribly juvenile antics.

Today concealed carry is 100% legal and on January 1, 2016 open carry will be legal as well, but if a business or property owner states that they will NOT allow open carry on their property or in their establishment then they are well within their rights and there is no sense in complaining. It’s THEIR right!

An owner is also within his rights to disallow concealed carry in his place of business as well, and I won’t gripe about that either, it’s their place and their right!

I just won’t spend MY money in THEIR business. That is MY right!

Let’s all meet up at the Whataburger at Hwy 66 and Dal-Rock about 4:30 this afternoon and have a burger to show that we support THEIR right to prohibit *open carry*… And carry concealed if you come…

  2. Texasperated says:

Responded on FB, but not saying anything you’re not saying.

    Keep your powder dry

  3. The Right Handed Cowboy says:

You are spot on correct Fred..

  4. BobF says:

Exactly Fred. Constitutional rights end on my property line. Nobody has the right to come onto my property and hold a religious service, bring undesired reading material, hold an assembly, or carry firearms unless I give my permission. Property owners have rights too and my rights on my property trump anyone else’s rights. Whataburger Restaurants are private property and the owner has their rights too.

If someone doesn’t like Whataburgers decision on open carry, then it’s their right not to frequent or support that establishment. It seems the owner of Whataburger supports Concealed Carry and you would think gun owners would be happy but you can never please some people.

Hey, can always use the drive thru and eat in the parking lot.

  6. dekare says:

I agree as well. Yes, I am a big proponent for gun rights, and if somewhat is all for concealed carry, then they have done their part in my book.

Walking around open carry style is tantamount to walking around with your dick out. You are showing the whole world what you got, and you kinda look like an idiot. And carrying a rifle, such as a AK-47 on your shoulder, just plain looks douchey. It looks like you are compensating for something.

And just like your penis, you should only take it out when you are ready to use it. No use showing the world how adequate or inadequate you are until you have to. And just like a penis, it does not matter the size, it’s how you use it.

Plus, open carry does scare some people, and that only makes some people scream for “reasonable” gun laws to be passed. Why provoke this….we don’t need any more negative attention then what we already have. No use scaring everyone. Carrying a weapon, IMO, should be like the way the military treated fags, don’t ask, don’t tell. Keep that sh*t under wraps. Like Fred said, open carry means you get the first bullet if some idiot decides to go on a shooting spree. Stealth is always your friend when a SHTF moment occurs.

Just because you can do something does not mean you should do it. With open gun carry, this statement holds true. Keep it in your pants….your gun that is.

I’m with you Fred. Keep ’em in the dark about whether or not you’re armed.

  8. Gary K says:

Why did you drop the CSA Battle Flag?

The soldiers that died deserve a memorial to their sacrifice.

The CSA National Flag would be another matter.

  9. Bloviating Zeppelinq says:

I am with you. It is the Off Duty (now retired) Cop in me. I’d rather no one know I carry until such time as I actually need it.

I posted this on Facebook this afternoon: Somehow I thought most of the people on my friends list believed in FREEDOM and RIGHTS… Apparently not… Whataburger, or any other business has a RIGHT to rule their establishment as they see fit… You can spend YOUR money likewise, but don’t condemn Whataburger for exercising THEIR rights as well…

Some people preach RIGHTS RIGHTS RIGHTS all over the net when they are talking about themselves, they seem to conveniently forget that others have their rights too…

I don’t like watching some asshole burn the American flag but according the SCOTUS that burning is their RIGHT… Do we remain a FREE nation or do we become a strict theocracy that in all fact and actuality makes us no different than Islam?

    • dekare says:

Something just fricking occured to me. We have a 2nd Amendment that say we have the GOD GIVEN RIGHT to bear arms, but if a business wants to ban us from doing this, well it’s perfectly okay, as it is a private business and they can do what they want.

However, there is NO GOD GIVEN RIGHT to gay marriage, but if a business chooses to not allow it…they are to be destroyed, and their destruction is backed by the US Courts.

      WTF?

Damn I get philosphical after 2 or 3 good bourbon and Coke Zeros…

Yeah me too. I was asked today to recommend top ten conservative sites and here’s what I said:
Well they would be where I venture to everyday. It would be also where bloggers mostly write their own stuff, not news aggregators . Anyway I suppose C&H can’t win a prize on it’s own site, but should be first. So my others are: Nebraska Energy Observer, Bunkerville, Texas Fred, Americaswatchtower, and The Independent Sentinel, no particular order as I like all.
Not bigoted, just prejudiced, and as I misspelled before sending…sometimes prejuiced, but so oh well and so what. :)
P.S. Add one I haven’t been reading long. Right Ring.
