Athens, Ala., Voters Say Yes to Alcohol

ATHENS, Ala. (AP) - Voters had a chance Tuesday to return this northern Alabama city to the days of Prohibition but overwhelmingly decided to keep alcohol in its stores and restaurants, according to unofficial results.

A measure to end the sale of alcohol in Athens failed in a citywide vote, a rare instance in which voters could overturn a previous vote to allow sales. Business interests are against repeal, but church leaders who helped organize the petition drive that got the measure on the ballot are asking members to pray and fast in support of a ban.

Business leaders argued that ending the sale of beer, wine and liquor would hurt tax revenues and send the message that Athens is backward.

“Economic impact is really the big issue,” said Carl Hunt, an organizer of the pro-alcohol sale Citizens for Economic Progress.

Athens, Ala., Voters Say Yes to Alcohol

Well, I am guessing that there were some folks out having a ‘cold one’ after that little brouhaha, as I said in a piece I wrote on this 2 days ago, Alabama city to hold Prohibition vote, if you want to take a drink, you’re going to take a drink, if you don’t want to, that’s good too, leaves more for the ones that do…

No one is forcing anyone to take a drink or buy the booze being sold I am guessing, this was nothing more than an individual church trying to set the morals, as THEY see them, for an entire community, and that isn’t right, in this nation we have freedom OF religion but we also have freedom FROM religion and for someone to tell me that I can’t buy a drink because basically, it offends THEIR morals and because THEY think it’s wrong, well, as they say down home, that old dog just won’t hunt…

The Rev. Eddie Gooch, who pushed for the vote, wasn’t worried about the city losing businesses or tax revenues if alcohol sales are banned. Normal economic growth and God will make up any difference if residents dump the bottle, he said.

I personally think the good reverend needs to pull his head out of the sand and take a breath of fresh air, the revenues lost if this were to pass could very easily cause the town to lose a lot of jobs, and with those jobs they could lose people, and some of those people are quite likely members of Bro. Gooch’s church, I’ll bet they looked around real close before they went in to vote too, had to make sure the good reverend wasn’t looking over their shoulder, wouldn’t want to make him mad by voting to keep the revenue coming in and the booze flowing now would they??

Let’s face facts, the preacher has the right to preach any message he wants to in his church and to organize any kind of recall election he wants to take the time and effort to organize, now he has lost on this election, he has been soundly beaten, it’s time to go back to preaching in the church again, tell em all about the evils of sex, cigarettes, drugs, booze and dancing, and tell em what that leads to while you’re at it, and keep right on preaching NO BOOZE, inside the walls of your church, because I don’t think you got the message through to the majority this time…

And while I’m in the mood I may as well piss off a few more folks; WHY do Baptists NOT have sex standing up??

If someone sees ‘em they may be accused of dancing… Amen…
