450 Mayors Petition Obama To Adopt Broad Gun Reform

A new report from a national coalition of mayors urges President Obama to adopt dozens of reforms to help curb gun violence, including steps to crack down on problems at gun shows and the creation of a federal interstate firearms trafficking unit.

The “Blueprint for Federal Action on Illegal Guns,” a copy of which was obtained by The Washington Post, presents 40 recommendations that “would dramatically improve law enforcement’s ability to keep guns out of the hands of criminals — and, in doing so, save innocent lives.”

The strategies outlined by the Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a bipartisan group of about 450 mayors nationwide, focus on the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The agency, which has been sent a copy of the report, declined to comment.

“Implementing these recommendations would achieve a goal that all participants in the gun debate support: enforcing laws already on the books,” says an accompanying letter signed by the coalition’s co-chairmen, Mayors Thomas M. Menino (D) of Boston and Michael R. Bloomberg (I) of New York.

Well, isn’t that a fine mess? Thank GOD there were NO Texas Mayors on this list. Even our Dem Mayors here in Texas aren’t that stupid.

I honestly wish Texas would just walk away and go back to being The Republic of Texas, a free and separate entity, all unto itself. It may become a real necessity if the Obama administration, and his far left moonbat support base aren’t stopped soon.

Below is more information from the NRA website, a listing of Mayor that are supporting this BS, with a map to pinpoint them and a link to find out how to get your Mayor OFF of this ridiculous list if they happen to be ON it.

Some local mayors have joined “Mayors Against Illegal Guns” (MAIG) which was founded and is funded by activist anti-gun billionaire and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Is your mayor one of them? Click here to find out! You may also look at the list below.

Despite its very misleading name, this national group of anti-gun mayors has lobbied Congress against national reciprocity of state Right-to-Carry permits, against much-needed reform of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE), for regulating gun shows out of existence, and for repealing the Tiahrt Amendment that protects the privacy rights of law-abiding gun owners and limits disclosure of sensitive firearm trace data to protect law enforcement personnel and protect lawful gun manufacturers from bogus lawsuits.

This nation is already headed down the path to socialism my friends. The day that the morons in Washington, D.C. actually find the GUTS to TRY and take the guns from our citizenry, that will be the day that the United States of America ceases to exist.

We ALL want less crime, and we ALL certainly want less GUN crime, but here’s what the loons on the left, the Mayors that support this, and the anti-gun libbers won’t tell you, and likely won’t accept as a true fact. If every legal gun owner in America was disarmed, there would still be millions of illegal guns out there, in the hands of the criminals, and that is not a scenario I am wanting to face.

Legal gun owners are NOT the ones out there committing armed robbery, rape and murder, but the anti-gun morons can’t, or won’t admit that either. If we could find a way to take ALL the guns out of the hands of CRIMINALS, that would be the ONLY kind of gun control I could ever support. But, sadly, that action will never happen. Criminals will not give up their guns, only the honest among us would be compelled to do such.

I guess it’s a good thing I have a deep, buried strain of bad guy in me, because when the federal government starts taking guns, I go outlaw!

And I would be remiss in my duty as a certified rightwing terrorist blogger if I didn’t mention my great friend, Patrick Sperry of Conservative Libertarian Outpost, Patrick sent this one to me, I guess he figured I would tear down on it.

He was right!

TN has three on that list. The Shelby County mayor Wharton doesn’t surprise me at all. He’s now running for Memphis mayor. Wish we could give that city to Arkansas. But Oak Ridge and Bristol? Now THAT surprises me.

You spoke too soon Fred…Hurst, TX is on there now.

We have 2 here in MD. I am not surprised Sheila Dixon is on the list, She just happens to be under investigation for all kinds of fraud and stealing gift cards from children in Baltimore for her own personal use. If Texas does secede, you will have a lot more friends in your state Fred! Me being one of them.

Yep…the first and last time the United States had gun control and took away the guns…..the US Army went in and almost killed all of them…..I’m referring to the native Indians. That is what will happen to all of us if we give up our guns.

I see how the map works now, pages 1,2 and 3, PINS only show THAT page… The map is NOT a complete shot of ALL Mayors, it’s a page to page thing…

I honestly did NOT see the page thing, my bad… But, it’s only 1 Mayor, and it’s not a Mayor of ANY note or one that has ANY base of power…

How does it feel to be the ONLY Mayor in the entire state of Texas to sign on to this veiled attempt at a libber gun grab? I sincerely hope your constituents take you to the wood shed in your next election. You are a disgrace!

You know Kate dear, Arkansas is still living down being the home state of Billary!!! They sure as hell don’t want Memphis!!!! LOL!!!!

Tennessee will just have to bear the burden, as Arkansas, is still trying to find a state that will take Little Rock off their hands!!!!!

Geesh!!!! LOL!!!! Nuthin like kicking a state when it’s down!! :-D

My town and Indianapolis’ Mayors aren’t stupid, but there are enough in Indiana to keep me busy writing emails today! Clued my PGR / gun buddy in GA on it too! I was surprised to see how many GA mayors are on that list!

Let’s see now - 450 mayors, out of roughly 30,000 across the USA? This is a “mandate”? Sure - gun control works. Yup. Uh huh.

Let’s see now – cocaine has been outlawed, so no one snorts cocaine or smokes crack. Robbing banks is illegal, so nobody robs banks. Smoking pot is against the law, so nobody smokes pot. Drunk driving is a criminal offense, so nobody drives drunk. So it naturally follows that, if guns are made illegal, nobody will have a gun, and the whole world will be just like Mister Roger’s neighborhood! Yeah, right. If you believe that, I have a bridge in Brooklyn I’d like to sell you.

The lie: Banning guns keeps the people safer.
The truth: Washington D.C. enacted a ban on handguns in 1976. Between 1976 and 1991, Washington D.C.’s homicide rate rose 200%, while the U.S. rate rose 12%.

Flash back to March 30th, 1981. John Hinckley Jr. shoots President Ronald Reagan outside the Hilton Hotel in Washington DC. But how could that have happened? Virtually all guns had been banned in Washington for 5 years! Gee – maybe it is true after all that criminals will consistently ignore just one more law, tote their gun with them anyway, and use that illegal gun to commit a crime! Ya think?

Reagan was also surrounded by Secret Service agents (arguably the finest security people in the world) and Washington DC police officers when he was shot. So much for some people’s belief and assertion that a ban on guns and law enforcement officers nearby (or 20 minutes away) will prevent gun violence by criminals…

The lie: To keep and bear arms and have a concealed weapons permit is, like a license to drive a car, a privilege, not a right.

The truth: The analogy between a driver’s license and a right to carry license is fundamentally flawed. As the right to drive a car is not guaranteed by the Constitution, it is indeed a privilege. However, the Constitution does guarantee me the individual right to not only keep, but to bear arms - which by any definition means carrying it with me. It, therefore, is an inalienable right.

Granted, rights can be taken from you, but only by due process of law. Convicted felons lose, among other things, their right to vote and their right to keep and bear arms - but these rights must be taken from an individual on a specific and distinct case by case basis - again due process in a court of law. A blanket ruling or ordinance denying everyone a right guaranteed by the Bill of Rights is not due process, being obviously flawed in that, while it may strip a few people of the right to bear arms who may not warrant having that right, it also inherently and by its very nature arbitrarily strips the majority of the citizenry of that right with neither just cause nor due process. This is nothing more than the government, be it local, state, or federal, telling citizens they are guilty until proven innocent and indiscriminately stripping them of their rights with no trial, no jury, no evidence, and the citizen having no right to face their accuser or defend themselves with legal council - another whole set of Constitutional violations.

The lie: If we allow people to have guns, there will be shootouts in the streets and blood will run. We will go back to the days of the Wild West.

The truth: “As you know, I was very outspoken in my opposition to the passage of the Concealed Handgun Act. I did not feel that such legislation was in the public interest and presented a clear and present danger to law abiding citizens by placing more handguns on our streets. Boy was I wrong. Our experience in Harris County, and indeed state-wide, has proven my initial fears absolutely groundless.? - John Holmes, former Harris County (Houston – the 4th largest city in the United States) District Attorney, several years after the passage of the law restoring right to carry in Texas.

“I lobbied against the law in 1993 and 1995 because I thought it would lead to wholesale armed conflict. That hasn’t happened,? Glenn White, President of the Dallas Police Association told the Dallas Morning News. “All the horror stories I thought would come to pass didn’t happen. No bogeyman. I think it’s worked out well, and that says good things about the citizens who have permits. I’m a convert.?

After ten years, the Concealed Handgun Law in Texas is a shining example of what happens when elected officials have faith in the citizens they represent. The record in every other state which allows its citizens to carry concealed weapons is virtually identical.

Just a note here – if your Federal, state, or local representatives think you are too stupid or too untrustworthy to be allowed your Constitutionally guaranteed right to keep and bear arms, don’t you think it’s about time to reciprocate and vote them out of office because they are too ignorant of the facts, too arrogant in their mistrust of you, and too untrustworthy to govern you? As ye sow, so shall ye reap…

The validity of the second amendment is, thank goodness, is not something you personally get to decide for everyone. You can decide for yourself, but only for yourself. For every other American, you have no say in the matter. Get used to it.
The bill of rights is sort of like the 10 Commandments in that the 10 Commandments are not “the 10 Suggestions?. Same with the Bill of Rights - they are not 10 suggestions that can be ignored or stepped on by any person or government - local, state, federal, or foreign. The main difference between the Bill of Rights and the 10 Commandments is that you are judged by the Bill of Rights while you are alive, and the 10 Commandments after you die. All of you out there who do not want a gun? Then don’t own one - that is your right, and I have no right - moral, political, or otherwise to stand in your way of exercising that right. But what you must understand is that you have no right - moral, political, or otherwise - to stand in the way of any responsible citizen’s right to keep and bear arms. Keeping means owning one and bearing means having it on or about your person. If that qualifies me in anyone’s mind as a “right wing gun nut?, then, by that definition, I am. And proudly am, at that

    Texas Fred,

You are as ugly as you are dumb. I suggest you at least take your picture from your web site. If you want to see a handsome dude, go to the City Of Hurst web site. http://www.ci.hurst.tx.us./

As to your question, how does it feel to be the only Mayor in Texas to be a member of MAIG. It feels wonderful. At least one mayor has the guts (actually I preferred another word) to stand up for what is right. I am sending you an attachment that I put together. You will likely have to have your wife or child read it to you. It has some big words in it. But… have it read to you with an open mind and you might realize that we are all seeking the same thing. Get the criminals and illegal guns off the streets.

Bloomberg is a lefty posing as a RINO. Any proposal by him on the gun issue is unconstitutional. He has a lot of money of his own and is trying to bully legislation into existence. The other mayors going along with this need to be voted out of office. Will be hard in places like Philly and Atlanta. If, however, you live in one of those bastions of liberalism you ought to have a feel for the politics.

Fred - You need to start a boycott of Hurst until Mayor Ward changes his tune. If he wants criminals and illegal guns off the streets; make it a mandate for his police force. Maybe he has no faith in his force? I wonder how many illegal aliens reside in Hurst?

The mayor of Tulsa, OK was on the list, but she resigned. It’s a good thing that she has came to her senses.

You know, just once I would like to sit down with some of these people who seem to think that gun control is the answer to crime and ask them one simple question. How in the world is taking away my guns going to prevent a criminal from obtaining a gun? I would love to see how they answered that.

  33. comment number 33 by: Tailgunner

LD - they CAN’T answer that. Nor do they want to. All restrictive gun laws do is disarm the good citizens. As far as the criminals are concerned, it’s just one more little law for them to break. Hardly seems like a blip on a criminals radar screen when they are intent on robbery, rape, or murder.

Take this to the mayor and ask them to refute ANY of the FACTS presented here:
