Sebelius: Americans must get swine flu vaccination

WASHINGTON (AP) - Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius appealed anew Wednesday for widespread inoculation against a surging swine flu threat, calling the vaccine “safe and secure.”

Sebelius unconditionally vouched for the safety of the vaccine, saying it “has been made exactly the same way seasonal vaccine has been made, year in and year out.”

Appearing on morning news shows to step up the Obama administration’s campaign for vaccinations, Sebelius said that “the adverse effects are minimal. … We know it’s safe and secure. … This is definitely is a safe vaccine for people to get.”

Sebelius was asked on CNN about surveys showing many parents were wary of getting their children vaccinated for fear the vaccine has been too hastily prepared and wasn’t safe. She replied that it was targeted specifically at the H1N1 virus and was “right on target with an immune response.”

Full Story Here:
Sebelius: Americans must get swine flu vaccination

I went and got my annual, seasonal flu shot last week. Several of us were sitting there in the waiting room, waiting to get the vaccination, and the topic of conversation turned to H1N1, The Swine Flu.

Texans, and most folks from the South in general, just strike up spontaneous conversations when we are in a group. We’re a friendly and inquisitive bunch. We discuss a lot of politics here in Texas. It’s a fairly safe topic given that the libs are to afraid to open their mouth if there’s more than 2 Conservatives around, and, most of us that ARE Conservatives have the language skills to actually conduct a conversation without resorting to name calling. Anyway…

We were discussing the Swine Flu vaccine, it’s safety, it’s dangers, the idea that the government may try to force people to take this vaccine, even if they don’t want to, so forth and so on…

I am not going to divulge where I got my annual flu shot, but, the health care professional that was giving the shots fell in on our conversation and stated, with NO reservation, “I won’t take the thing! I don’t believe they have done all the necessary work on it. I don’t believe it’s safe, and I remember the debacle back in the ’70s when this was tried.”

I too remember that debacle. People DIED. And it wasn’t from the flu, it was from the inoculation.

I take the annual vaccine. It has proven to be fairly effective and all things considered, safe too. I took the pneumonia vaccine as well. Those are to protect me and are taken because I want to take them.

The surest way for me to go into FULL rebellion mode is to tell me I must get swine flu vaccination! They have just hit the immovable object!

And I am sure most of you remember the Avian Flu? Bird Flu? Well, there are treatments being tried for that and swine flu as well. They are more of a homeopathic type medicine though.

For Bird Flu, you get a TWEETMENT.

For Swine Flu, you get an OINKMENT. :P

This H1N1 shot scares me for sure. I have read many reports from doctors on what is in this vaccine and the list of ingredients are scary. Some of them are squalene (here is a good link w/infor: Squalene: The Swine Flu Vaccine’s Dirty Little Secret Exposed, spermicide and mercury.

I will not have my children given this vaccine. My 3yr old had open heart surgery when she was 4 months old and we have done everything to get her immune system back on track. I happen to be into organic and natural (if I can afford it) and vitamins. I know some people don’t agree w/me, but my daughter is very healthy now. I just don’t understand how they can push something that has not been fully tested. From what I read about the vaccine in the 70’s Fred, your right more died from the vaccine than they did the flu. This administration is trying to take away more and more of our freedoms.

I haven’t had a flu shot since the Marines MADE me have one, the last one was in 1984.

I have only had the flu once since then, and it was over in three days or so. you know - lots of rest, fluids, and rest. And fluids.

I have always been a believer in letting the body fight off whatever tries to invade. If you keep trying to “help” your body fight off infections and what not, then the body is not working at it’s full potential.

I understand why someone would be on a regular schedule of the flu shots, mostly because their body is no longer able to fight the flu by itself, and I harbor no ill will towards those who take the shot.

At any rate, no one in this household is going to be taking the H1N1 shot. It just doesn’t make sense.

More better than thou types making decisions for you because you are just plain to stupid to know what is good for you and yours…

    I don’t think so…

I just don’t think there was enough time to produce and make sure this drug is safe. Take Guardasil for example. They are still saying its safe, but girls are dying and having horrible side effects from it. No one in my family will be getting the H1N1 shot. I’ll let someone else be the guinea pig thank you.

Got my seasonal flu shot at the health clinic at NAS Corpus Christi earlier this week and had the same conversation with the nurse giving the shot. Told her I wouldn’t get the swine flu shot because of what happened in the 70s. She agreed and stated that she was going to decline the shot also. People tend to forget the past and history also tends to repeat if we’re not careful. Don’t think anyone knows what the side effects of this vaccine will be. The swine flu vaccine in the 70s caused a lot of nerve disorders especially in children. Sebelius needs to be vaccinated, then we can wait and see what happens.

Howzabout Sebelius MUST get a copy of The Constitution, actually read it, and actually make some effort to understand it?

Nah – doesn’t fit his agenda…… why let a little ol’ thing like The Constitution get in the way of the scheme du jour? Hey – if Uncle Barry can ignore it, why can’t Sebelius?

As I stated in my own post yesterday, I will NOT be getting that shot!

I noticed in that article that she says something to the effect that kids don’t have the immunity to fight it off. I’m not at all surprised considering the anti germ campaign that’s been going on for decades. How are kids suppose to build up any sort of immunity if they never come into contact with just plain every day germs?

    Frequent contact?? Building Immunity?? STDs??

    Never having had one…

    Coincidence maybe?? :?

Let me look at a short version of my list—I have too buckle up, I have to buy a hunting and fishing license, I have to pay taxes, I have to buy car insurance, I have to buy a car tag, the list goes on and on and according to Kathleen Sebelius I must get a flu shot—just one more government intrusion in my life. Granted some of the above make sense, but I don’t like anyone telling me what to do, how to live my life and the last one I would take advice from is the government because they know the very least about me and mine. And they have their agenda and not my best interest in mind. Screw the swine flu shots. Our doctor told us just this morning NOT to take them and he know our histroy better than any Obama appointee setting behind some desk in Washington or near the loop in Chicago. Yea, I’m pissed off, but that’s nothing new I’ve been pissed off now for over 50 years. I sick and tired of spineless, crooked, dump, stupid, sometimes queer politicians telling me what I have to do. I’m a thinker and not someone who just fell off the watermelon truck on the way to the food stamp off. I not like those “so-called” homeless people lining up in Detriot today to get there stimulus money while the local liquor store owners check their inventory to make sure they are well stocked for the flood of people that will visit them this evening spending our money and not Obama’s as one igorant lady said earlier today. Screw the politicians and a pox on those dumb voters who elected them.

I’m a firm believer in Flu vacines…that is the regular ones. I think I’ll wait a while for the other to see what effects it has on people. I don’t think the VA will have it until Nov. anyway.

I didn’t take the Flu shot one year thinking I didn’t need it since I leave so far out in the country I was never around that many people. Well luck ( bad luck that is ) has it that one person came to visit and passed it on to my wife..then I got it a week or so later. We were both sick for well over 30 days…at times I thought I was dying…at others times I wished I was dead…because I felt so bad.

Volunteer shots are one thing…but making me take them is like waving a red flag in front of a bull….someone is going to get hurt trying to make me have a shot.

And Freds right…most people in Texas are pretty friendly…unless they are small town mayors…ha ha ha

Fred: As I think you know, my hubby the Grouch, is a physician, does strictly ER now, is Chief of Staff of the local hospital and has been for years. He believes the H1N1 is completely safe. It is made/produced in exactly the same way the common flu shots are. He and I will both take ours as soon as the hospital gets their supply. We are taking it because it is the responsible thing to do for ourselves, our family and those that we both come in contact with.

We are not getting the shot because the government says we must, we are getting it because we feel it is the best thing to do for ourselves. We do not believe the government should force anyone to take these shots and we believe in personal freedom and personal responsibility. Let everyone decide for themselves.

I got the Swine Flu shot in 1976. I was active duty USAF and we had to get the shot. It was done in mass in an aircraft hangar with medical personnel and ambulances standing by. I watched my Maintenance Officer, a major, get his shot, walk about 30 feel, go stiff as a board, and fall flat on his face. Good thing the ambulances were standing by.

If my wife, a Medical Laboratory Technician, gets the shot, I may get one too. This year was the first time since we’ve been married that she got the seasonal flu shot and she says she may get the Swine Flu one too. Whether I get one or not this time, it’s my choice, not the government’s.
