Feds consider new gun regs

The Obama administration is working on new gun control regulations that would target stolen and missing weapons.

Police have a hard time tracking firearms that disappear from gun shops, which “just feeds the sort of already large and existing secondary market on guns,” said Sam Hoover, a staff attorney with the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

It is unclear precisely what the draft regulations, drawn up by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and under review at the White House’s regulations office, would do.

The ATF would not comment on the draft rule, since it has not yet been released to the public, but a description provided by the White House asserts that it would target cases where guns go missing “in transit.” SOURCE

Some of my readers may not have known, or have noticed, but I shut the blog down for a couple of days while I dealt with a continuing health issue. That issue hasn’t been fully put to rest but the stress level has been notched down several degrees.

What a way to get back into the blogging world; a story about guns and MORE Federal regulations on them and gun dealers.

The first thing I have to say will come as NO surprise to anyone; gun control is NOT about guns, it IS all about control, the control of those that own and use guns.

Every time there is an incident where a gun is used to commit some type of crime; whether it’s a robbery, a murder, a mass killing or any other type of crime, the Libbers get all fired up again and try, in any way they can come up with, to take away guns from the millions of SANE and LAWFUL gun owners of this nation.

Since the Libbers have been unable to affect a total ban on guns, their ownership and a forced confiscation of those guns, they again try what they believe to be *the next best thing*; additional and more restrictive gun regulations on manufacturers, distributors, dealers and owners, claiming it’s all being done in an effort to reduce gun crime and gun violence.

Guns going missing *in transit* must be a bigger crime problem than I know about, and I tend to keep a close watch on things like that. Recently this story surfaced, 63 semi-automatic guns go missing from La.-bound truck; 4 arrested, and to the best of my knowledge, the arrests of those thought to have stolen, or arranged for the guns to BE stolen is all that has transpired.

I have heard of no weapons being recovered. Personally, I would think that the recovery of those weapons would be a big story for the BATF had it occurred, if for no other reason in an effort to offset all the news that has been out there since the BATF engaged in some nefarious gun dealings themselves; that being operation Fast and Furious and the *gun walking* that took place.

Currently, gun dealers with a federal license are required to tell federal agents after they discover a firearm has gone missing, but they aren’t required to do routine checks.

“They can discover a gun missing today and have no idea when it went missing, which really makes that information useless to law enforcement,” said Chelsea Parsons, associate director of crime and firearms policy at the Center for American Progress.

I happen to know some folks that have their Federal Firearms Licenses, one is a Class III dealer, meaning he can deal, legally, in fully automatic weapons. For those not knowing what that means; think *machine gun*.

Maybe I’m just too innocent, maybe some of my gun dealer friends are too straight-up LEGAL, I don’t know, but I DO know this; a FFL, especially a Class III license is too hard to come by. No one that I know would engage in illegal or otherwise nefarious gun dealing for many reasons, not the least of which being a massive loss of income and personal freedom.

Speaking as a gun owner, and I can only speak for myself, but if I were to have a gun go *missing* I would immediately be one the phone to our Police to report the weapon, with all pertinent data; make, model, caliber and serial number.

Criminals don’t get their guns through LEGAL sources, they STEAL them FROM legal sources, the American gun owner, and even though WE don’t commit the gun crimes the Libber Left wants us to be held totally responsible and to be disarmed and defenseless.

It seems to me that no matter what reputable gun dealers and legal gun owners do, it’s never enough to make the anti-gun cabal happy and the whole thing truly boils down to their desire to see ALL guns out of the hands of Americans.

MOLON LABE! Come and TAKE ‘em

Okay, so let’s say the government takes away everyone’s guns “to keep them safe”. Does this suggest that criminals would not then turn to some other weapon? Not all murders in the USA are done with guns. These gun-grabbers are the worst kind of hypocrites.

    • Patrick Sperry says:

Alan, latest numbers from the FBI state quite clearly that blunt weapons are the number one weapon used in assaults and homicides by far. So where is the hue and cry for baseball bat control..?

Molon Labe. Never will happen in TEXAS!

  3. dekare says:

I will make them a deal. I will give them all of my guns and ammo, swear to never buy another gun again, and become an advocate for gun restriction…IF those that want this, give up their guns completely, hire no bodyguards, accept no protection from anyone who is armed, or allow the protection of themselves or their families in no way to be connected with a firearm of any kind, no special treatment, no secret bunkers if the SHTF, no secret service, no military protection, no standby police officers hired for them…etc. They are just as helpless to defending of themselves as I would be. If someone wants to steal from them or hurt them, they have to call 911 and hope the police respond in time.

If they need an armed response to danger, they have to call the police and wait for them to arrive just like everyone else would have to. No special protection, just like they want of me.

Seems fair to me. You give up yours, I will give up mine. All is fair.

Oh, and if any criminal is caught using a gun to commit a crime in any way, they get sentenced to death and it is carried out within 30 days of conviction. No coddling of criminals, no rehabilitating them, no blaming society for their plight, regardles of the color of their skin…THEY DIE. After all, have to send a strict message that guns will NOT be tolerated.

    Any takers?

Almost a non-sequitur, but not quite, responding to Mr Caruba… sort of:

    http://www.press.uchicago.edu/Misc/Chicago/493636.html

“…Criminals are deterred by higher penalties. Just as higher arrest and conviction rates deter crime, so does the risk that someone committing a crime will confront someone able to defend him or herself. There is a strong negative relationship between the number of law-abiding citizens with permits and the crime rate—as more people obtain permits there is a greater decline in violent crime rates. For each additional year that a concealed handgun law is in effect the murder rate declines by 3 percent, rape by 2 percent, and robberies by over 2 percent.

Concealed handgun laws reduce violent crime for two reasons. First, they reduce the number of attempted crimes because criminals are uncertain which potential victims can defend themselves. Second, victims who have guns are in a much better position to defend themselves…”

  5. DrummerXD says:

Sheriff Mike Lewis of Wicomico County, MD. testified that every weapon used in a crime that he recovered in his 28 years in law enforcement was obtained illegally. That is telling me that, #1. Gun laws directed at dealers don’t work. #2. Every politician knows this and it is indeed about power and control. #3. We The People have been remiss in exercising our 2nd Amendment rights, and that has made our politicians bold, and unafraid of the consequences of their lies and fraud.

Addendum: Last night, Police put out a robocall that 2 suspects from a robbery in a nearby town had fled and were believed to be in our neighborhood or the surrounding woods. We were told to stay inside and not to be worried by the helicopter and spotlight. They went on to say that the suspects were BELIEVED to be unarmed. The helicopters searched the area from 10PM to 2AM. Spotlights shining in the bedroom windows. They never caught the suspects. It was found that they had car jacked a woman at gunpoint and made their getaway. But WE should be unarmed?!?!?

  6. Bloviating Zeppelin says:

First, good to see you back Fred, and God bless.

Second, gun crime is DOWN over the past 20 years, and crimes involving so-called “assault weapons” are UNDER TWO PER-CENT.

Leftists just want to remove firearms from the people. Control — by GOVERNMENT — plain and simple.

  7. Steve Dennis says:

I hope you are feeling better! More rule changes skirting the Congress in order to implement Obama’s radical, anti-gun agenda. One way or the other Obama is determined to go after the gun owners.

  8. Retired Tpr says:

How many weapons are missing from the Federal Agencies? Perhaps a FOIL request is in order! I would bet that the number is larger than the number of ” in transit ” weapons that are missing. Of course these are the Feds, and taking a statement from Obama, ” It’s not my fault!”

  9. Nemesis says:

Good to see you back on deck Fred. I guess the medics would have told you to steer clear of any stress related activities? Oh well, you can’t keep a good man down!

Gunphobia is a disease of the variety of human that has cowardly tendencies and who believe that causing guns to be made ‘illegal’ may also cause their irrational phobia to disappear.

No one can reason with these people who believe that by controlling others they can through ‘laws’ turn the world into how they believe the world should be while completely ignoring how the world really is.

That kind of thinking reminds me of how a child thinks, and anyone who has ever watched children and the games they can sometimes play can also detect the would be controllers. That controlling behaviour - or inner totalitarian tendency - can then be projected onto some adults who have just never grown up, and because they have never grown up disagree with the how the world really is and are in positions of power to do something about it.

In reality we are dealing with adults who have never relinquished their own inner totalitarian tendency that is to some extent, within all of us, but which makes them very dangerous people indeed!

    Hope yer feelin’ better Fred!

  11. LD Jackson says:

Gun control advocates need to change their label. They should be gun owner control advocates. That’s what they are really after.

And seriously! Are they so naive that they would believe anyone with a FFL would not “notice” a gun was missing? A gun doesn’t go missing, it’s stolen. If the holder of the FFL doesn’t know if he/she has a gun missing, then maybe they don’t need a FFL.

  12. Chief says:

First, Let me wish you the best in recovery from what ails you… Old age does creep up on you..
As a concerned citizen, considered by DHS as a domestic terroriist ( I’m a retired veteran and a Viet Nam vet too) . All this hullablu about guns is just politics.. and it’s about control and the eventual take over of this great country by the socialist/muslim/nazi brotherhood. I our coungress had the conjones to stand up to Ofubar and his administration this topic would not even be here..
