WASHINGTON — The chairman of the U.S. Senate Armed Services committee said he was leaving Wednesday for Iraq to tell its leaders that they must accept responsibility for their country.
“Folks, if you want a civil war in this country, that’s your choice. Count us out of your civil war. We’ve been here four-and-a-half years,” Democratic Senator Carl Levin of Michigan told reporters Wednesday during a stop at Michigan’s statehouse.
Levin’s comments came as the death toll rose to 250 following a spate of four homicide truck bombings in northwestern Iraq Tuesday, underscoring the difficulties in curtailing the steady stream of shooting and bombings that have become the soundtrack to Iraq’s reconstruction efforts.
With Americans increasingly frustrated about the mounting U.S. deaths there, the U.S. Congress is awaiting a pivotal assessment due in September by Ambassador Ryan Crocker and Gen. David Petraeus amid a fierce debate over whether to begin withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq.

Senator Carl Levin to Tell Iraqi Lawmakers to Count U.S. Out of Civil War
I never have been in agreement with the Dems on their views of what is really going on in Iraq or how we need to handle it, until now, and I’m not sure I can fully agree with Levin on this, I don’t know if his words are motivated by his heart or his politics…
Some folks say the surge is a tremendous success, and tell you that bombings in Baghdad are down by 50% or so, and that IS good news, but what about the bombings elsewhere in Iraq?? Do they sort of balance out the positives in Baghdad itself with their obvious and quite apparent negativity??
And to say the Iraqi lawmakers need to count the U.S. out of a civil war is a bit late I think, there already IS a civil war, and we’re caught in the middle of it, and in many ways, whether the U.S. will admit it or not, we bear a certain level of responsibility FOR this civil war, the Bush administration was warned that civil war was a distinct possibility before any action was pursued, but they ignored that advice, they were apprised of ALL possibilities and a failure to establish a strong Iraqi central government and the ramifications of that failure, was one of those scenarios laid out…
This story ties in perfectly with the one just below, I posted my opinion on this same topic well before this post and story came out, maybe I should consider a run at politics, I can’t do any worse than the current batch we have now, and I am obviously thinking along the same lines as some of the pols from BOTH sides…
We can only do so much in Iraq, and in my opinion, short of placing Iraq on total lockdown and declaring it under U.S. martial law and then forcing OUR way of life and government on them, it’s pretty much come down to a case of the ball being in the Iraqi court, they have to act on their own behalf, they must decide if they are going to be a FREE nation or a Muslim nation, and it’s quite obvious, to me at least, you can’t be FREE and Muslim, not if the violence in the Mid-East and most of Asia is any example…
And as I, and many others have pointed out, we can’t, or more correctly, we’re NOTÂ securing our own nation, how can we secure theirs??

I’ve said this many times and I’ll say it again.
If we’re not there to win and use overwhelming force to do it, then brings our troops home.
These fine men and women are soldiers, not policemen.
If that’s cut and running, then so be it.
Win or leave, the sooner the better.
No, you can’t be free and Muslim, that would resemble America too much or even worse Israel, they’re not going to have any of that by Allah…
It appears to me that the only logical solution is to just pull up our pants and come home. hell, the objective of taking out Saddam Hussein has been met. If there are any WMDs they have went underground and we probably will never find them…although we might see them in the future. Declare victory and tell the Iraqis “It is all YOURS”
Will a bloodbath follow? Probably. Is it the fault of the USA and allies? Not really…no more than it was the fault of the USA when Saddam Hussein murdered a million Shiites and another couple of hundred thousand Kurds. If is a big fuckin’ word and “IF” we had not of went in no-one knows what would have happened.
Yeah, there is a hell of a lot of blame to place. Blame Bush and his advisers for not putting enough troops on the ground to disarm the population and secure areas taken. Blame the left wing for abetting the insurgents..every time they have a war protest it is encouragement for the enemy. Blame a public that is not willing to make personal sacrifices in order to win a war. Blame a media that refuses to air the vitories and the good things that have happened in Iraq but twist the bad to make news and fit their left wing agenda.
But don’t blame the military..at least the rank and file who have fought with skill, pride and honor. I do blame some generals who didn’t have the balls to stand up to the administration and demand that the war be fought the way it should have been fought…and that is killing until the enemy submits…total and unconditional surrender.
So bring home the troops. Say we won..and I say that we did win because the original objectives have been accomplished. And if the Iraqis want to continue to kill each other off that just means fewer of the Muslims we will have to fight next time…and oh yes my friends, there will be a next time. It is just a matter of when and where…
Exactly… Our troops did what they were allowed to do, and would have done a lot more if they has a CiC with BALLS…
