GOP sweep: Big governor victories in Virginia, NJ
WASHINGTON (AP) - Independents who swept Barack Obama to a historic 2008 victory broke big for Republicans on Tuesday as the GOP wrested political control from Democrats in Virginia and New Jersey, a troubling sign for the president and his party heading into an important midterm election year.
Conservative Republican Bob McDonnell’s victory in the Virginia governor’s race over Democrat R. Creigh Deeds and moderate Republican Chris Christie’s ouster of unpopular New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine was a double-barreled triumph for a party looking to rebuild after being booted from power in national elections in 2006 and 2008.
Elsewhere on Tuesday, Maine voters rejected a state law that would allow same-sex couples to wed. If supporters had prevailed, it would have marked the first time that the electorate in any state endorsed gay marriage.
And Democrat Bill Owens captured a GOP-held vacant 23rd Congressional District seat in New York in a race that highlighted fissures in the Republican Party and illustrated hurdles the GOP could face in capitalizing on any voter discontent with Obama and Democrats next fall.

GOP sweep: Big governor victories in Virginia, NJ
I want to congratulate ALL of the Republican winners from yesterdays election. I hope ALL of you are the Conservatives we need to have in positions of power in this nation. If not, 4 years is ALL you get.
Conservatives all over America are happy about the message that this election sent. I am pretty happy too, but I am not ecstatic. There is a lot of work that still needs to be done. Yesterday was primarily a battle of 2 Governors races, and as important as it is to have Republican Governors, it’s even more important that those Governors are Conservatives that are going to take care of the people and their state and not toe some specific party line. Especially when that party line has little, if anything to do with conservatism.
In other words, NO MORE RINOs.
Folks, I don’t mean to be a killjoy here, but this battle is just beginning, and as one of my great comment makers said in the thread just below this one, he was reminded of Sir Winston Churchill’s great quote: “This is not the end, it is not the beginning of the end, but it is the end of the beginning.”
I want to congratulate the voters of Maine for rejecting a state law that would allow same-sex couples to wed. I was NOT sure that one was going to fly given the choices of Senators that Mainers exhibit. I honestly wasn’t sure that the people of Maine had a Conservative bone among them.
As important as the Governor wins in New Jersey and Virginia were, the real battle will come when we have congressional and senatorial elections. The defeat of Doug Hoffman for the New York seat was a loss for ALL Conservatives. I hope it’s not indicative of the political climate of New York, but I’m afraid it is. Look at New York City, they re-elected Michael Bloomberg to a 3rd term as Mayor. Bloomberg is an anti-gun RINO moonbat that is as libber as it gets. I once thought it was just NYC, now I have doubts regarding conservatism in upstate New York as well.
If these victories in Virginia and New Jersey are to have ANY real meaning, the Conservative wave will have to sweep through this nation like a tsunami. We have to have true Conservatives running for office everywhere. NO MORE RINOs! We can’t accept another RINO, and if that’s all the GOP has to offer, then Conservatives have to reject that offering and reject the GOP and RNC.
Now we need for people like Newt Gingrich to keep their stupid yaps shut, the RNC needs to FIRE Michael Steele! The RNC needs to get a REAL Conservative in there and not some GOP *Token Black* set in place simply because he’s black, in an effort to counteract Obama.
There ARE Conservative Black people in this nation. We have one of the greatest right here in Texas in Michael Williams, and we intend to send Michael to Washington to replace the Queen of the RINOs, Kay Bailey Hutchison. Michael is not a token anything, he’s the REAL DEAL, and that is what the RNC needs to catch on to. We are NOT going to take the same old thing from the GOP and the RNC.
From here on out it’s hard core politics, CONSERVATIVE politics! If you think there’s a poser in the mix, let’s take them out of that mix. Blogs are a powerful tool, that is not an opinion, it’s a fact, and we can get more information in front of more people than the MSM can ever dream of.
Conservative America is waking up, and we’re taking this nation back, from the Libs, from the Dems, from the RINOs, from the enemies of this nation that are currently sitting in the Oval Office! The Socialistic lovers of Islam and tyranny that are trying desperately to destroy America!
Maine was somewhat surprising to me also Fred, but then ever time the voters have gotten to vote on this issue they have rejected it nation wide despite having their state legislatures and judges rule the other way. This is only additional proof that our elected officials are out-of-step with the man oon the street. Guess there are some sane people left in Maine despite the migration from NY state to escape the high taxes—I idea that the new immigrants from NY will bring with them despite their move to Maine. Liberals never learn—I saw this happen in FL during the 10 years I lived there.
As you said in your post this is only a first step and a very tiny one at that and is only a beginning on a very long path back to national sanity. But for today, at least we conservatives can smile. Heck I may go squirrel hunting late this afternoon. I feel so sporting I may use my pellet rifle instead of my 22 rifle.
I was really hoping Hoffman would have pulled it off but considering all the Republican money went to Scuzzy and he didn’t get into the race until recently, he really didn’t do to bad. Also, when she endorsed the Democrat candidate, many voters who didn’t know better probably followed her recommendation. Unfortunately there are still a lot of people who don’t have a clue and only follow a person or party. But, they are waking up as yesterday proved.
Also, me being originally from NY, their politics can be really screwed up. A candidate can run on both the Republican and Democrat tickets. Unless you follow elections close, especially local ones, it’s very hard to tell exactly what a candidate is; Republican, Democrat, Liberal, Conservative, etc.
TF - Well said!
My understanding is that Scuzzy didn’t leave the race in time for her name to be taken off the ballot. Thus alot of people who just voted straight republican had their votes go to her and basically were wasted votes. We will never know for sure if the would have chosen to vote for Hoffman instead, but I’d like to think many of them would have. So don’t completely give up hope in NY just yet.
Lee I have never understood why many vote a straight ticket, but they often do. I would like to see that feature stripped from the ballot, but the two parties will never let that happen. Its their way of protecting a down ticket weak candidate. American politics sucks, but then no other system is better. I do however like the multi-party systems of some European countries—those systems do offer more choices.
This was a good night for conservatives, New York 23 notwithstanding, but it was only the beginning. We need to carry this momentum into the 2010 elections. We may be energized now but we need to stay energized. There is still work to be done.
New York get’s what they deserve on this one. Hooray for VA and NJ. It does show an awakening is happening. Too bad Pelosi is so drunk on power and koolaid that she’s not “getting the message”. I can’t wait to see her lose her precious “power position”!!!
