Official: US sea captain freed in swift firefight

MOMBASA, Kenya (AP) - An American ship captain was freed unharmed Sunday in a swift firefight that killed three of the four Somali pirates who had been holding him for days in a lifeboat off the coast of Africa, the ship’s owner said and a U.S. official said.

A senior U.S. intelligence official said a pirate who had been involved in negotiations to free Capt. Richard Phillips but who was not on the lifeboat was in custody.

Phillips, 53, of Underhill, Vermont, was safely transported to a Navy warship nearby.

Maersk Line Limited President and CEO John Reinhart said in a news release that the U.S. government informed the company around 1:30 p.m. EDT Sunday that Phillips had been rescued. Reinhart said the company called Phillips’ wife, Andrea, to tell her the news.

I have NO idea yet regarding WHO ordered this, but, if it was Obama, maybe he’s not the wimp we believe him to be. Maybe. All I know is that it took about 3 days too long to come to a conclusion. You can’t negotiate with these people, they do NOT understand reason! Kill them and be done with it!

Perhaps ol’ Butt Orifice was waiting for the UN to act. Pfft! Honestly, I think the Captain decided to take action, and the Naval folks got sick of waiting. Just speculation on my part, obviously, but…..

Congrats to the WARRIORS who made this rescue happen. It did take too long and that message needs to be sent to the hill and needs to get down to the commanders of the task force on station. The moment another attack happens, they need the authority to move in and attack. Kill the bastards responsible in their boats and along the coast.

In many ways I suspect we’ll not know. If Obama made no decision and a naval captain made the decision independent of Mr Obama, I submit it would be safe to say that that is one captain who has jeopardized the rest of what little career he has left.

Agree with both previous comments… I am thrilled at the outcome - 3 days too long, as you say Fred, BUT I HOPE BO does not flap his jaws and now jeopardise even more people.

He is a wimp. Remember that reception he got in Iraq. I have received many emails from soldiers that it was all staged. Yet you will not hear the media say anything about that.

It took 3 days for this to happen due to good planning. Any mission of this type take days to put together and execute.

    No input from Stinky needed.

Great news … thank God for the Captain’s safety. I hope we get to hear just how it came about. Navy Seals ???

Fred, I love that graphic of the eagle and the flag. It looks great on the tote bag that I ordered from your gift shop. I’m going to enjoy using it when I go shopping. My daughter thinks it’s pretty ‘cool’ too.

Happy Easter to all of you!

I agree, Kate, of course! NO imput from BO needed. “Move along there, BO. Let the REAL Americans take care of business…

I have posted this update and used the Beeb too, who are saying that the Captain jumped into the water again and then the pirates were killed. I have to laugh to read that one of the Somali elders was on the USS Bainbridge ‘negotiating’ while this was going down, and that HE is now under arrest. Gotta love our military.;)

I also read that the Captain jumped into the water again, so the islamopirates were fair game to the Navy Seals. Good job guys!!!!! Go Navy!!!! Doubt that “The One” ordered it, based on earlier reports that US Navy personnel, who were in a small boat tried to get close to the raft and were fired on by the Islamopirates and left without firing back. The whole story sounded like the Navy was there, but were totally restrained, except for negotiations, of course. My put is that the Captain is the hero, by giving the Seals an opportunity to take out the Islamopirates. The Navy Seals are heroes for taking them out!!! And, “The One” is now taking the credit! Wonder what will happen to the Islamopirate “taken into custody”? The ACLU will probably defend him in court and the Seals will probably be charged with murder. Can’t happen you say…look at the Marines who were charged with murder and put through the ringer for doing their duty in Iraq. However, one by one they’ve been exonerated. Thank God!!!

I’m sure that the whole story will come out. Be it SEALS, Marines or whoever that pulled the triggers WELL DONE. As for the impostor in chief? Even a broken clock shows the correct time two times a day.
