Driver with 268,000 Rounds of Ammo Took Wrong Turn to Mexico

The freight company said it’s been in touch with U.S. LE agencies & the U.S. consulate

EL PASO, Texas (AP) — The boss of a truck driver caught with 268,000 rounds of ammunition in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, says his employee took a wrong turn on his way to deliver what he says was legal cargo bound for an Arizona dealer.

Dennis Mekenye, operations manager at Demco freight company in the Dallas suburb of Arlington, said Thursday that driver Jabin Bogan, 27, made “a very honest mistake” when he took a wrong turn that eventually led him to Mexico on Tuesday. Mekenye says he’s been in touch with U.S. law enforcement agencies and the U.S. consulate in Ciudad Juarez.

“We want this solved, that is why we have been so forthcoming with authorities.”

ATF spokesman Tom Crowley said that agents in Juarez “are looking into the specifics of what happened” but declined further comment.

The truck’s tracking unit showed that it had entered into Mexico and that is when Mekenye said he decided to call Bogan.

“We do not go into Mexico, our company is not licensed to go into Mexico,” Mekenye said. The driver told him over the phone that Mexican authorities had detained him and were going to inspect the cargo.

Mekenye said that Bogan informed him that after making two of his three stops in El Paso, Texas, he proceeded to drive to the third stop at company called Carefusion in El Paso before heading to Phoenix, where the ammunition was to be delivered. But he took a wrong turn and found himself at the Bridge of The Americas, unable to make a U-Turn.

“He said a cop told him to go straight and then he could make a U-turn,” Mekenye told The Associated Press. He could not confirm whether the law enforcement officer Bogan talked to was from the U.S. or Mexico.

Delilah Dominguez at Carefusion said the company would not comment on whether there was cargo expected to be delivered by Demco Tuesday.

Howard Glaser, owner of United Nations Ammunition in Phoenix, said the cargo was 18,000 units of 5.56 caliber bullets like those used for ar-15 assault rifles and 250,000 .308 caliber bullets. “They are saying these (the .308 rounds) are for AK-47 rifles but the brass casing is 12 millimeters longer, it will not fit in the chamber,” said Glaser.

“They are making a big political issue out of this,” said Glaser.

Glaser said he bought these surplus rounds from Wideners, an ammunition distribution company in Tennessee and they were intended to be sold mostly online at his online store. There was no immediate comment from Wideners regarding this cargo.

The federal prosecutor’s office in northern Chihuahua state said Bogan is being held pending investigation on illegal weapons charges. Spokesman Angel Torres says the driver claimed he had no goods to declare. Torres said a gamma-ray inspection of the truck’s cargo compartment revealed the presence of metal canisters holding the ammunition. He says the bullets were hidden under pallets in the truck’s floor.

Two calibers of ammunition were found, which can be fired by AR-15 and AK-47 assault rifles, Mexican prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said it was the largest seizure of ammunition in Ciudad Juarez in recent memory.

A *wrong turn*? Seriously?

I lived in El Paso for YEARS and it is damned near IMPOSSIBLE to take a wrong turn into Juarez. Unless you’re STUPID. I mean TOTAL MORON stupid.

When I lived in El Paso, even if you did get headed to Mexico by mistake, there was a U-turn BEFORE the border, you know, just in case, and there were NO GUNS signs all over the place, no guns in Mexico that is.

There is a brief and annoying ad before the video plays, the video is worth the wait!

video platformvideo managementvideo solutionsvideo player

I have to wonder, if the guy isn’t a total moron, then he had to have been looking for that *big score* … UNLESS …

Was this an effort by Eric Holder, BATF, Fast and Furious, Operation Gun Runner et al to supply ammo to their Mexican cartel buddies for all the weapons that Holder, DoJ and BATF let slip across the border?

And as a point of clarification for those not knowing, an AR-15 and an M-4 fire a 5.56 (.223) round, a 240-Bravo fires a 7.62×51 (.308 Win). The AK-47 fires a 7.62×39 round, it will NOT chamber in a weapon that is chambered for a .308 Win.

Sadly, if Fast and Furious was as fulfilling as its brainchild had hoped, the Cartels may very well have a few 240-Bravo weapons.

A point I feel that needs to be made is this; Howard Glaser, owner of United Nations Ammunition in Phoenix is either a IDIOT, or has one running his website.

Please keep Jabin Bogan in your prayers. He is an innocent working man inprisoned in Mexico for doing his honest job. He made a wrong turn by accident! It is not as difficult as one may think. United Nations Ammo Company (UNAC)

No UNAC, it really DOES take a MORON to cross the Mexican border, at ANY crossing in El Paso County, and claim it was done by accident. U.S. highways that lead to the border with Mexico are VERY plainly marked.

And to the dumb-ass at UNAC that wrote their post, pay attention — it’s IMPRISON. 😛

Who wants to buy ammo from a company calling itself United Nations Ammo Company anyway? Maybe it’s just me but I smell a serious case of ROTTEN going down here…

Somewhere in all of this is a Taco Bell commercial; Make a Run fo the Border! 😛

You’re correct, it does stink, but I’m not sure it reeks of DOJ. I wouldn’t be surprised if it reeks of PAYOFF to the ammo manufacturer, the trucking company, or both.

  2. Hoosier Army Mom says:

Can count on you to put out the facts vs liberal fiction. I wouldn’t do business with anyone who used “United Nations” in their company name. I’m with you all, this stinks of moonbat activity… MORON, even in all caps, just doesn’t express the level of stupidity and bull crap these idiots expect the public to believe. :-O

    Thanks for the facts Fred!

  3. mrchuck says:

At first, I thought that the truck driver is Somalian, but after his mother’s sobbing on camera, guess he’s an American.

Mexico is so corrupt that they will hold onto this shipment of ammo for a BRIBE!

Ahem … mordida in espanol. Translates into “little bite”.

This is always part of any transaction with any part of the Mexican Govt. Looks like a driver’s mistake, and there will be mucho dinero pagar para regreando de balatas.

The owner is a dunce for having a driver this dumb!!!

When I saw the guys name I immediately thought *rag head*… Still not sure if he is or isn’t, he can be an South Dallas *rag head* convert, who knows, but that’s the 1st time I ever heard a name like his and the accent used by his *boss*, and not wanting his face shown … well, something is rotten in Denmark, uh, El Paso…

  4. Katie says:

Not a total moron Fred. A delivery boy for Hizbollah. Take a look at the name, the amount of ammo and the “misdirection”. Hizbollah is staging on the Texas border, waiting to invade and go into action.

  5. Bunkerville says:

A whole lot more to this story. One can only wonder how much more is making it across the border. Thanks for the pics… says it all.
