Official proposes bullet tax to curb Chicago crime

CHICAGO (AP) - As Chicago struggles to quell gang violence that has contributed to a jump in homicides, a top elected official wants to tax the sale of every bullet and firearm - an effort even she acknowledges could spark a legal challenge.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle will submit a budget proposal Thursday that calls for a tax of a nickel for each bullet and $25 for each firearm sold in the nation’s second-largest county, which encompasses Chicago.

Preckwinkle’s office estimates the tax will generate about $1 million a year, money that would be used for various county services including medical care for gunshot victims. Law enforcement officials would not have to pay the tax, but the office said it would apply to 40 federally licensed gun dealers in the county.

Through last week, the city reported 409 homicides this year compared to 324 during the same period in 2011. Although the violence still doesn’t approach the nearly 900 homicides a year Chicago averaged in the 1990s, officials say gang violence was largely to blame for a rash of shootings earlier this year.

In the DIM minds of the Democrats in Chicago a tax of a nickel for each bullet and $25 for each firearm sold in the Chicago area is a good thing and will be a crime stopper of sorts and will generate $1 million a year, that would be used for various county services including medical care of gunshot victims.

Well sure, TAX legal gun owners Chicago; make THEM pay for the violence that engulfs you city, sounds like a wonderful idea to me, until you consider this, the people that are committing these gang shootings, drive-by shootings, hold ups, robberies and assorted acts of violence are NOT legal gun owners that BUY their guns and ammo!

All locals have to do is go across the Cook County line to but what they want, and from Chicago it’s a very short drive across the Indiana or Wisconsin state line and it is only a matter of walking into ANY sporting goods store and buying your ammo there, if you’re a person that believes in buying your ammo.

So, that would totally negate the idea of a .05 per round tax on ammo, you see, if you plan on buying a large amount of ammo the cost of the drive, and the idea of screwing Chicago itself out of the tax money would make ME drive that short distance just on general principles.

For those that wish to buy and own a LEGAL gun in Chicago, well, I guess you got them with this $25 for each firearm sold in Chicago. But here again, the people doing the crimes aren’t getting their guns legally, all you will be doing is penalizing honest people!

Preckwinkle insists the ordinance is far more about addressing gun violence than raising money for a county that faces a deficit of more than $100 million next year

Toni Preckwinkle is a damned LIAR, for all of the above stated reasons, and let’s face it, it’s Chicago, it’s ALWAYS about the money!

“We think that’s an appropriate thing to do, especially in the light of the gun violence we struggle to deal with in our criminal justice system and our public health system,” she told a local newspaper editorial board this week, according to a transcript of the meeting provided by her office. “The legal gun shops in suburban Cook County are a conduit for crimes in Chicago. There’s no way around it.”

Again I say, Toni Preckwinkle is either a LIAR, or she is one of the most misinformed and ignorant Democrat I have ever seen. I’m betting it’s a bit of BOTH!

Pay attention Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, you are nowhere near the problem or any kind of solution TO your problems of gun violence in Chicago.

The problem that Chicago faces is rooted in the complexion of the city, gang violence and the fact that Chicago has ALWAYS had a history of crime, corruption and murder, THAT is what built Chicago in the 1st place, and no TAX on bullets or guns will stop it, no more than Prohibition stopped people from drinking!
