Sen. Ensign’s admission blurs conservative image

LAS VEGAS (AP) - For much of his public career, Sen. John Ensign has appeared a model of the religious right. By this week, he had become just another politician diminished by scandal. Rattled, humbled and alone at the podium, Ensign acknowledged to reporters an extramarital affair, the sort of moral failing he’s criticized in the past.

The Nevada Republican once called on President Bill Clinton to resign, declaring “the truth must come out.” In October 2007, he was sharply critical of former Sen. Larry Craig, of Idaho, calling the Republican’s arrest in an airport bathroom sex sting “embarrassing for the Senate.”

His own admission Tuesday came at a time when the two-term Nevada Republican was building his national profile and assuming leadership in his party. He had recently traveled to Iowa, fueling speculation about his White House ambitions.

The senator has said the Republican Party was in need of new leadership. He hoped to be among the fresh faces, and he built his resume by serving as the GOP’s top Senate candidate recruiter in 2008 and as chairman of the Republican Policy Committee in the Senate, the fourth-ranking leadership post. On Wednesday, he resigned from the position on the policy committee.

On July 18, 1969 Ted Kennedy was directly responsible for the death of Mary Jo Kopechne. He left her to drown in the car that his drunken self drove off that bridge on Chappaquiddick Island. Ted Kennedy is STILL a United States Senator. I have NEVER heard the libtards scream for his resignation. Just sayin’.

Should Sen. John Ensign resign?? Yes, I believe he should. I believe that would be the correct and decent thing to do, otherwise, he’s just another hypocrite RINO that claimed Conservatism and didn’t live up to the responsibility OF that mantle.

For Nevadans, he was known as a polished pro-business Republican and well-spoken ally of the state’s religious conservatives. He was a member of Promise Keepers, a men’s Christian group that espoused devotion to family and marriage.

Even more reason to resign I believe. I am not judging Sen. John Ensign, I am not going to demand that he DO anything, but I will say this, if he has a decent bone in his body, the simple shame of his actions should dictate how he directs his future.

This is not a case where an apology can be made and accepted by the wife and all things are forgiven. That may work for their marriage but it’s not going to get the job done for the Conservative right.

Many Christian conservatives will see Ensign’s public admission as brave and necessary, Ziser said.

If you’re going to play the game, you’ve gotta pay the price. Right?? If the so-called *religious right* isn’t outraged and screaming for Ensign to resign, then the so-called *religious right* is at risk of becoming nothing more than a bunch of crybaby hypocrites.

Oh My God! Did TexasFred just say that the *religious right* was at risk of becoming crybaby hypocrites on this?

Well, yeah, I damn sure did. And here’s why. The *religious right* is still screaming for David Letterman’s head, over a really bad joke. One that he has apologized for profusely, twice. Letterman didn’t screw around or cheat on his wife, not that I am aware of, he made a really stupid remark that he absolutely should not have made and it came back to bite him in the ass. And millions of Americans are demanding he be fired. For a joke.

Ensign broke the sanctity of his marriage vows, he made a total hypocrite of himself, all that he claims to believe in, and all that he supposedly stands for. I fully expect the *religious right* to demand equal unemployment for Ensign, for what I perceive to be a much more serious violation of the public trust than some late night comic making a totally tasteless joke!

Like you said, I’m not telling Ensign what to do, that’s the job of his conscience, assuming he has one.

  2. Kate says:

The senator has said the Republican Party was in need of new leadership.

Well, he sure got THAT right….they do need new leadership, cuz the leadership they’ve got right now, for the most part…sucks! :)

Now, as one of those who would be considered the “religious right”, I never called for Letterman to resign. Personally, I don’t care if he’s on the air or not. Don’t watch him. If people want to send a message, don’t buy from his advertisers.

Should Ensign resigns? Well, honestly, I don’t know. I can forgive him cuz he’s human. As a human, he is subject to the pitfalls of his inner workings. What he did was wrong, no doubt about that! Is this a ongoing thing with him? Haven’t really seen that anywhere, so don’t know. If he’s a Republican version of slick Willy, then he needs to go.

    But that’s just my 2 cents. :)

  3. Basti says:

Cheating on spouses is all to common. I don’t condone it by anyone. And IMO if you’ll cheat on your spouse you’ll cheat those who voted for you as Teflon Willy did.

  4. Kate says:

Oh, I agree Basti! If he was my husband, he’d be walking funny for the rest of his days! And yes, he cheats more than just his family. I wonder if there is something in the water in D.C.?? Jeez. The first thing the Mr said….being the cynic he is…..”At least it wasn’t a little boy.” sigh….

  5. BobF says:

That’s one of the problems when one gets on their self-righteous high horse. He cried for Clinton’s and Craig’s heads, not willing to forgive them but now he has fallen. I don’t like what he did but in the wrong place at the wrong time, any man or woman can fall into infidelity. Lets not forget now that one of the greatest men in both Christianity and Judaism, King David, took another man’s wife and then had the man killed in an attempt to cover it up. God forgave him but David paid a heavy price for it as the bible says, you reap what you sow.

  6. Bloviating Zeppelin says:

Letterman is just a dick. He couldn’t care less about the protests, he has sufficient money to fund an entire city for years. He’s just another GOWP.

Ensign will do what he’ll do. But he certainly deserves excoriation for his conduct. If you point the finger, expect it to turn and be pointed directly back, and rightly so.

  7. Bloviating Zeppelin says:

    But wait, there’s more:

The affair occurred when Ensign was separated from his wife.

Plus, he was shaken down for cash by the husband of the staffer he’d been sleeping with.

  8. cary - Botan Ichihara says:

Should Letterman be fired? For what, a bad joke? That’s a chance comedians take all the time.

Should Ensign step down? For a moral indiscretion? Like you said, Fred - if he truly is a conservative 1) this wouldn’t have happened, and b) he would have been delivering his resignation speech right after his announcement. But again, it’s up to him and his conscience.

Oh, wait - I forgot. He’s a career politician. ‘Nuf said.
