Russian agents infiltrated US society, charges say

NEW YORK (AP) - They sometimes worked in pairs and pretended to be married so they could blend in as the couple next door while working as spies in a throwback to the Cold War, complete with fake identities, invisible ink, coded radio transmissions and encrypted data to avoid detection, authorities say.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Farbiarz, speaking Monday in federal court in Manhattan, called the allegations against 10 people living in the Northeast “the tip of the iceberg” of a conspiracy of Russia’s intelligence service, the SVR, to collect inside U.S. information, the biggest such bust in recent years.

Each of the 10 was charged with conspiracy to act as an agent of a foreign government without notifying the U.S. attorney general, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison upon conviction. Two criminal complaints outlining the charges were filed in U.S. District Court in New York.

Police in Cyprus said Tuesday that an 11th defendant, a Canadian citizen wanted by U.S. authorities on suspicion of espionage and money laundering, was arrested in the morning at Larnaca airport while trying to fly to Budapest, Hungary.

The days of Boris and Natasha, or Spy vs Spy are NOT over it appears.

Russia angrily denounced the U.S. arrests as an unjustified throwback to the Cold War, and senior lawmakers said some in the U.S. government may be trying to undercut President Barack Obama’s warming relations with Moscow.

Russian SVR folks, read: KGB, they changed the letters in an effort to placate the politically correct among us, anyway, they are not too bright if they believe the U.S. government is trying to undercut Obama’s efforts to warm up relations with Russia.

If there are any real PATRIOTS in the U.S. government, they are trying to tie Obama in to this as a Russian plant, a student of all things anti-American. An operative perhaps, the Manchurian Candidate come to life…

“These actions are unfounded and pursue unseemly goals,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. “We don’t understand the reasons which prompted the U.S. Department of Justice to make a public statement in the spirit of Cold War-era spy stories.”

I’m going to take a shot in the dark here. Not being privy to this operation and roundup, I am of the opinion that the U.S. Department of Justice made a public statement on this because, oh, I don’t know, maybe because it’s true?? Do you suppose?

Intelligence on Obama’s foreign policy, particularly toward Russia, appears to have been a top priority for the Russian agents, prosecutors said.

Of course Obama is a top priority for Russian agents. They have to keep track of their man in the White House and make sure that he’s doing the bidding of his Communist masters.

The one thing that does puzzle me is this; the DOJ is run by Eric Holder, he IS the Attorney General of the United States. Most Conservatives believe that Holder is Obama’s man at Justice, why would he allow this to take place? Was there a plot afoot that would imperil Obama and his deep cover as a Manchurian Candidate perhaps?

The papers allege the defendants’ spying has been going on for years.

In ALL seriousness, it has been going on for years. Anyone that buys into this Détente BS, or the Communism died fantasy needs to reexamine the way they look at reality. Russia has never had any less desire to destroy the United States. The destruction of democracy is the goal of ALL Russian leaders, otherwise, they wouldn’t BE Russian leaders.
