Republicans block child nutrition bill

WASHINGTON (AP) – House Republicans have temporarily blocked legislation to feed school meals to thousands more hungry children. Republicans used a procedural maneuver Wednesday to try to amend the $4.5 billion bill, which would give more needy children the opportunity to eat free lunches at school and make those lunches healthier. First lady Michelle Obama has lobbied for the bill as part of her “Let’s Move” campaign to combat childhood obesity.

House Democrats said the GOP amendment, which would have required background checks for child care workers, was an effort to kill the bill and delayed a final vote on the legislation rather than vote on the amendment.

Because the nutrition bill is identical to legislation passed by the Senate in August, passage would send it to the White House for President Barack Obama’s signature. If the bill were amended, it would be sent back to the Senate with little time left in the legislative session.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md. said the House would hold separate votes on Thursday on the amendment and the bill.

Don’t you just love the way the media makes the Republicans out to be the epitome of evil? The media is still tipped far to the left, they make it glaringly apparent every day.

The Dems are also pretty good at shuck and jive too, they say the GOP amendment is only being interjected in an attempt to kill the bill. Because God knows, the GOP doesn’t need to be concerned about workers backgrounds. Obviously, the Dems aren’t. Not if they object to these checks being made mandatory.

Republicans say the nutrition bill is too costly and an example of government overreach.

“It’s not about making our children healthy and active,” said Rep. John Kline, R-Minn., the top Republican on the House Education and Labor Committee. “We all want to see our children healthy and active. This is about spending and the role of government and the size of government – a debate about whether we’re listening to our constituents or not.”

No person in their right mind wants to see ANY child go hungry, but if we’re going to spend the money to feed hungry kids, let’s spend it to feed hungry AMERICAN kids. Let’s invest the time and effort to ascertain that the kids we are feeding are LEGAL American citizens.

I know there are hungry kids everywhere. You see the ads on television all the time. They tell you how many cents on the dollar go to feeding the kids, or how your $10 a month can feed, clothe and provide adequate housing, as well as full medical care for a poor unfortunate child in the middle of a flea infested sand pile somewhere in the world. For $10 a month…cheap.

If Mobama wants to feed hungry kids, maybe she could start by NOT stuffing her face, laying off at least 90% of her personal servants, having Hussein stay home for a while, thus saving millions for the operation of Air Force 1 and the staff needed to keep it flying, and not spend MILLIONS to reserve entire hotels overseas for them and their cronies.

That’s not asking too much of the POTUS and his pet Wookie is it?

Those charity groups that feed the children rely on charity, donations, benefactors and so forth. I wish them well too. I used to drop a few dollars in the pot myself, but like a lot of folks, my money is tight.

My blog depends on a few donations from generous readers that like what I write. But times are tight, donations are nearly nonexistent, that seriously limits my ability to help hungry children or make needed changes and updates here.

If I can cut back and make an occasional donation, Obama and Company can too.

If the government is going to feed American kids, needy American kids, I have no real issue with that, but make sure that they really are needy kids and not another welfare scam from the ghetto where the Baby Mama has no telling how many little tykes in tow, all from different Baby Daddy’s, because every time she drops another kid, she gets a bigger check from the government.

I have no problem with a “HAND UP”, but charity and welfare, ‘hand outs’, are not meant to be a way of life, unless you’re a Democrat and support yourself by dropping a baby every 10 months. That is not an acceptable way of life for most of us, but it IS the welfare mentality of the left, libbers and bleeding hearts.

The legislation would increase the amount of money schools are reimbursed by 6 cents a meal, a priority for schools that say they don’t have the dollars to feed needy kids.

Again the media tries to spin it in an effort to make the GOP look like the BAD GUY here. It’s only a 6 cents per meal increase in the reimbursement, that sounds reasonable enough, right?

Think about that 6 cents, multiplied many times, I have no idea how many times, but a great many I am sure, and I would guess the government has no real idea how many times either. Soon it adds up to a lot of money.

Now ask yourself this; how much of a difference is 6 cents going to make in ANY meal you make for yourself or family? Very little I am sure.

That 6 cents figure reminds me of this story from a couple of years ago: Alabama Sheriffs Feed Inmates on $1.75 a Day. There is NO WAY to feed a human being for $1.75 a day. There is no way to make a noticeable difference in a kids meal for an additional reimbursement of a mere 6 cents either.

Obama has frozen federal wages, social security has no COLA this year or next. I know kids have got to eat, but old folks, and legitimately disabled folks have got to eat too.

If there’s no COLA, if wages are frozen for the American people, people other than the POTUS and his Wookie, then Americans are going to be hungry soon. And I don’t mean just the kids!

‘Brother can you spare a dime’ was a catch phrase during the Great Depression. If 6 cents can make a more nutritious meal, it may become a catch phrase again in the very near future.

Is a “wookie” any kin to a chimpanzee?
    Just wonderin,,,,,

  2. Katie says:

What is wrong with background checks for workers with children? This is just political BS from the media. The same assholes who would have praised Congress for not passing the bill if it was done by Democrats.

Mr. Chuck, THIS is a Wookie:

    This is Mobama — Hussein’s pet Wookie…

  4. TexasFred says:

Since Hussein has been POTUS, his Pet Wookie gets a lot of makeup…

But they just can’t hide the fact that she has NO class and a FAT ass… 😈

What the 4.5 Billion should be going to is the production of thousands of Winchester model 70 .308 or 30-06 chambered deer riffles and Diowa rod/reel combos. Some of the money should be used for firearm/hunting and water safety classes. Then the children could learn to hunt and enjoy lean, healthy venison and crappie.
This would give inner city children a respect for the importance of the second amendment. Boy/Cub scout leaders who are jobless victims of Obama’s economy could also be hired as mentors to organize and supervise the hunting and fishing trips. This would give inner city children some much needed male father figure mentorship. Who knows, they might even learn good values like independance, self reliance, respect for athority, teamwork and so on. They might even decide to get advanced experience on those values and join the military.
Also, it would create thousands of “shovel ready” jobs for firearm, ammo, fishing equipment and sporting goods industries. The raw materials trucking and shipping industries would also benefit.

We’re hearing from Congress all kinds of domestic cuts but I’ve yet to hear anything about cutting foreign aid.

In NY State, a carton of generic cigarettes will cost you over 80 dollars. For that same 80 dollars, a parent could provide two children a good breakfast and lunch for a week with plenty of money left over. Many parents will buy the cigarettes and claim to be “poor” because they know the government will provide breakfast and lunch at school for their kids. These are the people who are screaming when they think the free lunch programs are going to be cut. They get money for food in the form of welfare but for some reason they don’t have the money to properly feed their kids.

Thank you TexasFred for the post.
Very well stated, and I am sure reflecting positions most of us would sign with both hands!

    BobF,
I was laughing when I read your comment!… My thoughts EXACTLY!

I was just thinking the same…how many hungry children are from homes/families where drugs, alcohol and cigarettes are PRIORITY?!!

The only sad part of it is: the children are not at fault!!

And there is no doubt, if Obama is so concern about it and want to make a difference why not start to trim the expenses in the WH? why she needs 20 assistants ??? she is not the only working Mom! wouldn’t 10 suffice?! and yes, you are right! cut the foreign aid!!!

The spin in that article is so blatant that it is funny! You would think that you were reading a Democrat press release, and you probably are come to think of it.

  9. Bob Mack says:

Whenever a Dem starts bleating about “the children”, you can be sure that a tax heist is not far behind. If they cared about kids, they wouldn’t have allowed 50 million of ’em to be aborted since 1973.
