Bush learns about the power of veto over-ride

November 8th, 2007 . by TexasFred

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush suffered the first veto override of his seven-year-old presidency Thursday as the Senate enacted a $23 billion water resources bill despite his protest that it was filled with unnecessary projects.

The 79-14 vote included 34 Republicans who defied the president. Enactment was a foregone conclusion, but it still marked a milestone for a president who spent his first six years with a much friendlier Congress controlled by his Republican Party.

Now he confronts a more hostile, Democratic-controlled legislature, and Thursday’s vote showed that most of the Republicans will defy him on spending matters dear to their political careers.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the House will vote as early as Friday on legislation that would spend $50 billion on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan but require that President Bush start bringing troops home.

The money is about a quarter of the $196 billion requested by Bush. It would finance about four months of combat in Iraq, Pelosi told reporters on Thursday.

“This is not a blank check for the president,” she said at a Capitol Hill news conference. “This is providing funding for the troops limited to a particular purpose, for a short time frame.”

House Readies Another Iraq War Vote

It had to happen, we ALL knew it would, Bush had the world by the tail when he went into Afghanistan in pursuit of the perpetrators of the 9-11 attacks, and had Bush stayed the course where the course really was he may have been able to maintain Republican control of the Congress and Senate, but he didn’t, he insisted that we traipse off to Iraq to take out the evil Saddam and his WMD’s…

Saddam is gone, no WMDs of ANY consequence were found, a significant majority of the American people didn’t give a damn about Iraqi freedom, I am one of them, and when those Americans tried their very best to get that message across to the most narrow minded and hard headed President this nation has ever seen but he refused to listen to anyone…

I have my own philosophy concerning the REAL reason we went to Iraq but I’ll leave that alone for now and stick to the topic, VETOS, and the reason they are happening…

As Iraq continued to bleed this nation of lives, massive amounts of money and time, the American people got the Presidents attention the only way they could, they took the House and Senate away from him, but Bush remained confident in his VETO pen, now Bush has such a low approval rating, even among many hard line Republicans, he is suffering veto reversals and will likely suffer even more setbacks before his administration is out of office…

It’s called reap what you sow, and that is exactly what Mr. Bush is doing now, he, through his actions as President, was directly responsible for the Republicans loss of both houses, his actions put many mid term elections in jeopardy and the presidential election a year from now is far from being in the bag, and Mr. Bush bears much of the responsibility for that as well, it’s not that the Dems are offering anything better, it’s not that Pelosi or Reid have all the solutions, they don’t, it’s simply a matter of Bush having dug a hole with his own inflexibility, he has placed himself, his presidency and the USA at the bottom of that hole, and now the Dems are going to take full advantage as they exploit any weakness in the Bush administration that they can find…

Some are going to point to the lessening violence in Baghdad and say that Mr. Bush has been successful in that area, I say look at the increase in violence in other parts of Iraq, as well as in many parts of Afghanistan before declaring ANY victory just yet, and then look at Pakistan, I am of the opinion that the reason we have seen such a dramatic decrease in the violence in Iraq is because the al-Qaeda fighters, Taliban fighters, whatever they may be, are in the process of moving their operation to an area that will be less defended, and at this time, not fully protected by the U.S. military…

Get used to it Mr. Bush, it’s not just the left that’s all over your every move now, roughly 70% of this nation has your number and that of our other elected leaders as well, and you guys ALL need to remember this, YOU work for US, it’s NOT the other way around, and we CAN fire every one of you, and your actions are fast bringing this nation together, against the status quo in D.C., think about that Mr. Bush…

This bill was pretty interesting. The Army Corps of Engineers said they only needed 5 Billion for the projects. The House voted on a 15 Billion dollar bill and the Senate voted on a 14 Billion dollar bill. The House and Senate then got together and compromised on a 23 Billion dollar bill. I don’t think this has anything to do with Bush getting his way. It think it’s rather trying to cut 18 Billion worth of pork out of a Water Resources Bill. If Bush would have used his veto pen during his first 6 years in office, Republicans might still be in control of congress.

In my opinion, BobF just nailed it. But Bush insisted on spending and APPROVING spending at a prodigious rate. There’s only one person to blame here.
