Couple Wins Millions in Lottery - Twice

August 31st, 2007 . by TexasFred

NEW YORK (AP) - How lucky can you get?

Adeline and Eugene Angelo won $5 million Thursday after buying the winning ticket in last week’s New York Lotto. In 1996, they won $2.5 million after splitting a $10 million jackpot with three other people.

Eugene Angelo, 81, said he and his wife would share their new fortune with their three sons and their families. Taking the lump-sum payment of $2.5 million, Eugene and Adeline and each of their sons will get about $513,000 before taxes.

“We’re a little older, a little wiser and there are a few more of us, when you count the grandkids,” Eugene Angelo said. “We’re still the same old people. Still very excited. It’s a great feeling.”

Adeline Angelo, 74, a retired medical secretary, said she hoped the new money will “buy us good health and longevity.”

With the winnings from their last big prize, the couple moved from the Bronx to Putnam County, about 50 miles north of the city. Eugene Angelo said they would continue to live modestly. And still buy lottery tickets, “just for the fun of it,” his wife added.

Acting Lottery Director Gardner Gurney said this was only the third time in Lotto’s history that a winner has hit the jackpot twice. The odds of winning just once were 22.5 million to one.

“The Angelos are living proof that lightning, or in this case, random luck, can strike twice,” he said.

Good for them, I love to hear stories like this, it makes Lotto players feel good…

I used to play the Lotto all the time, not so much anymore but once in a while I will buy a 5 line ticket, that’s what I always did, a 5 liner and no more…

Well, a few years ago I had a 5 liner and hit 3 out of 6 on 1 line and hit 4 out of 6 on a 2nd line, that was a decent little pay out, and I never pick numbers, I always do a quick pick…

Not too long after that, I was out of town on business and I called home that morning to check in with the wife and she told me, “You have no idea how close you are to being on a plane and headed home right now…”

Well, I thought something had really gone wrong until she told me, “I hit 5 out of 6 on the Texas Lotto last night…” and I have to tell you, if she had hit that 6th number we’d have fully retired, in comfort, right then…

I am very happy for the Angelos, I hope they live a lot longer and thoroughly enjoy it…

UN Inspectors Find Chemical in UN Office

August 30th, 2007 . by TexasFred

UNITED NATIONS (AP) - U.N. weapons inspectors discovered potentially hazardous chemical agents in their office near U.N. headquarters that were probably taken from Iraq’s main chemical weapons facility 11 years ago, officials said Thursday.

“There is no immediate risk or danger,” U.N. deputy spokeswoman Marie Okabe said.

She said there was no evacuation of the office of the U.N. Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission known as UNMOVIC, about a block north of U.N. headquarters on Manhattan’s east side, and U.S. authorities were called in to dispose of the material.

Okabe said one of the substances, identified Wednesday, was phosgene suspended in oil, “whose present state is unknown but which could be potentially hazardous.”

Phosgene can be used as a chemical weapon - and was used extensively in World War I - as a choking agent. Both phosgene gas and liquid can damage skin, eyes, nose, throat and lungs.Full Story Here:

I’ll be damned, there really are WMDs, and it only took the U.N. 11 years to find them, in their own offices…

No wonder these incompetent asshats can’t get anything accomplished in the world, they can’t even keep their own offices straight…

Maybe I owe Bush an apology, I mean, they were WMDs, he wasn’t totally full of crap, he just had his time frame all wrong, and attacked the wrong place, we should have sent the troops into the U.N. Headquarters…

I’ll bet Saddam would be relieved to know that huh??

Pentagon Disputes Parts of Iraq Report

August 30th, 2007 . by TexasFred

WASHINGTON (AP) - Stung by the bleak findings of a congressional audit of progress in Iraq, the Pentagon has asked that some of the negative assessments be revised, a military spokesman said Thursday.

Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell said that after reviewing a draft of the Government Accountability Office report - which has not yet been made public - policy officials “made some factual corrections” and “offered some suggestions on a few of the actual grades” assigned by the GAO.

The Associated Press has learned that the GAO report will conclude that at least 13 of the 18 benchmarks set to judge the Iraqi government’s performance in the political and security arenas haven’t been met.

“We have provided the GAO with information which we believe will lead them to conclude that a few of the benchmark grades should be upgraded from ‘not met’ to ‘met,’” Morrell said. He declined to elaborate or to spell out which of the benchmark grades the Pentagon was disputing.

What the hell?? The DoD gives the GAO the job of grading the Iraq debacle, the GAO does that job and is going to announce that Iraq is seriously lacking in their performance, so the DoD suddenly has some ‘new and improved’ information on the Iraqi debacle that will show it in a more favorable light?

Why don’t they just get Billy Mays to go in between Ka-Boom commercials and let that annoying asshat do a DoD Pro-Mo for them, I can see it now, Billy Mays, in his loud and annoying voice:

“Hi, Billy Mays here, speaking to you today for the Department of Defense concerning the new report on the effectiveness of the Iraqi government. Are you tired of those same old results from the MSM concerning Iraq?? Are you just fed up with the way Iraq looks on your TV and computer screen?? Well we now have ‘Sunshine in a Bottle’, it’s guaranteed to brighten up your outlook on Iraq and make you feel better all over, BUT WAIT!!”

“If you call within the next 10 minutes and tell one of our special operators that you heard about ‘Sunshine in a Bottle’ thru this special offer, we’ll include our high pressure sprayer and application device, that’s right, the high pressure sprayer and application device with an extended reach nozzle, that way you can blow sunshine up YOUR OWN ass, and that’s not all, for our 1st time customers we’ll also throw in a years supply of ‘Bullshit Repellent’ and if you call RIGHT NOW we’ll double the order, that’s right, 2 bottles of our new ‘Sunshine in a Bottle’, 2 high pressure sprayers with extended reach application device, you can blow sunshine up YOUR ass and your friends ass at the same time, and 2 large bottles of bullshit repellent to keep all those bloggers that make too much sense go away and leave you alone, all this for a low one time payment of $389.99, and if you call NOW we’ll also throw in a CD of Alberto Gonzales singing Mexican Christmas Carols as our FREE gift to you! I’m Billy Mays and we’re standing by waiting for your orders, CALL US NOW!!”

At the White House, officials argued that the GAO report, which was required by legislation President Bush signed last spring, was unrealistic because it assigned “pass or fail” grades to each benchmark, rather than assessing whether the Iraqis have made progress toward reaching the benchmark goals.

“A bar was set so high, that it was almost not to be able to be met,” White House deputy press secretary Dana Perino said. “On the other hand, one of the things it does not take into account, which is not on the benchmark list, is the cooperation of the Sunni tribes, who have decided to fight back against al-Qaida.”

The bar was set too high?? OK, expecting a nation to stand on it’s own and to actually think that they would stand and fight for their country is setting the bar too high?

Ya know, given the apathy I see among some people in this nation, maybe that IS setting the bar too high.
