US Death Toll in Iraq War Hits 4,000
March 24th, 2008 . by TexasFredBAGHDAD (AP) - A roadside bomb killed four U.S. soldiers in Baghdad on Sunday, the military said, pushing the overall American death toll in the five-year war to at least 4,000. The grim milestone came on a day when at least 61 people were killed across the country.
Rockets and mortars pounded the U.S.-protected Green Zone, underscoring the fragile security situation and the resilience of both Sunni and Shiite extremist groups despite an overall lull in violence.
The attacks on the Green Zone probably stemmed from rising tensions between rival Shiite groups and were the most sustained assault in months against the nerve center of the U.S. mission.
The soldiers with Multi-National Division - Baghdad were on a patrol when their vehicle was struck at about 10 p.m. in southern Baghdad, the military said. Another soldier was wounded in the attack - less than a week after the fifth anniversary of the conflict

OK Bush Bots, and other assorted Surge supporters, let me ask you this, does this sudden upswing in attacks signal that the Surge has gone by the wayside?? Did the Surge not do enough?? Should we have inundated Iraq with massive troops concentrations as opposed to a Surge??
Do you suppose a total lock down and cleaning out of Iraq might help to stop this idiocy?? Do you believe that is even possible without the full cooperation of the Iraqi people themselves, the ones that are supposedly moderate Muslims and want nothing more than a free and democratic society in Iraq??
Do you think for one moment that as long as people like Ayman al-Zawahri can garner headlines like this, Al-Qaida No. 2 Urges Attacks on Israel, US, that there won’t be a rapid and steady influx of willing martyr wannabes pouring into Iraq, much the same as the ILLEGALS, and only God knows who else pour into the USA through our porous borders??
Maybe it’s just an attack on Easter, who knows, given the attitude of Muslims against Christians, maybe it’s only a temporary dust up as al-Qaida once again shows us, the USA, supposedly the most powerful nation on earth, that as long as there is so much as one radical Muslim left alive, this thing will never stop…
When do we say ENOUGH?? When do we strike with the force that we have at our finger tips?? When do we put an end to this Debacle in Iraq??
The Bush says we won’t settle for anything less than victory, well, he sure has a funny way of going about the accomplishment of that mission, if we’re not going to go on a massive offensive and put an end to this thing, then maybe it IS time to just walk away, it certainly beats the idea of having more wonderful young Americans killed for a people that won’t stand and fight for themselves, either fight with everything we have and get this over with so it can be turned over to the Iraqis or admit that we don’t have the will to FIGHT anymore and come home…
And for the record, in MY opinion, our troops DO have the will to fight, and to do whatever it takes to bring this thing to an acceptable solution, it’s our president that doesn’t have the balls to give the order, he’s afraid that it might not be PC to do so, it might piss off some of his globalist buddies…
The Bush appears to believe that we must fight a war without offending anyone, as I have read elsewhere, ‘why worry about offending a bunch of people that already hate us, is it going to make them hate us more?’, do the job and bring our troops home, the USA has already suffered more than enough damage, in loss of life and in financial expenditure, WIN this thing Mr. Bush, otherwise, these deaths, and any more in the future, will have all been in vain, and that Sir, is on your head…

Bush has tried to do the impossible…please everybody which always results in pleasing damn near nobody…the irony is that as unpopular as he is he still has a higher popularity rating than congress..go figure..
I hate to hear the Bush-Bots say, “It’s only 4000 in 5 years, that’s only 800 per year, what’s the big deal?”
Speaking of our troops as if they were fishing lures, we lost some no big deal. F**k these people, each and everyone.
This is truly a sad day with NO VICTORY in site.
Agreed
Irony?? I’d say it’s more of a travesty…
Can you imagine what it feels like to be less popular than The Bush??
I would not want to belittle the sacrifice our troops make Ranando, but if it’s a numbers game, how come nobody is complaining about the 200,000 citizens who died in traffic accidents here in the US in the past five years? and they did not sign up for hazardous duty! many small children! teenagers! oh, the horror! the cost on the economy!
Hell with Iraq, we need to close all highways down immediately!!! why is Bush not doing anything about this!!!!! WE NEED A CONGRESSIONAL INVESTIGATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the press likes to goad emotional responses from us, why fall for it?
yes, we’ve spent too much life and money over there for what good it’ll do us, but what is pulling out going to do? just give the terrorists a boost.
I wish the arabs were still too busy killing each other to notice or bother with us, but that changed in the mid ’70s with Carter’s foolishness. and we’ve been a main target of theirs ever since, and we will be long after Bush is gone.
I’m with Mark. The only reason they headline this is because of political traction. We could list any number of reasons deaths are occurring everywhere and even though their numbers would be higher, they have no political punch.
I do not minimize the vast treasure of life each of these individuals have given, but if the war was popular we wouldn’t see the constant drum beat of negative statistics. We owe a great debt to each of the families who have had there blood spilled in this war.
Fred, I’m with you in getting it on and getting it over with. We need to stop pleasing everyone and start squeezing off more rounds and get the job done.
I can’t believe the idiocy that has gone into this war.
