Pentagon: Taliban a resilient force in Afghanistan
June 27th, 2008 . by TexasFredWASHINGTON (AP) - The Taliban has regrouped after its initial fall from power in Afghanistan and the pace of its attacks is likely to increase this year, according to a Pentagon report that offers a dim view of progress in the nearly seven-year-old war.
Noting that insurgent violence has climbed, the report said that despite U.S. and coalition efforts to capture and kill key leaders, the Taliban is likely to “maintain or even increase the scope and pace of its terrorist attacks and bombings in 2008.”
The Taliban, it said, has “coalesced into a resilient insurgency.”
At the same time, the Afghan Army and national police are progressing slowly and still lack the trainers they need.

Pentagon: Taliban a resilient force in Afghanistan
We had the Taliban on the run, we had them all but defeated, we were doing one hell of a job in Afghanistan, and that is exactly where we needed to be, and our wonderful troops were kicking ass and taking names, and then what happens?
Gooooooooooddddd Morning Baghdad!
We draw down our forces, we lose focus on the battle where the battle really was, and check it out, now our troops have to go in for a *do over*, a damned *do over*, all because our ADD president had to rush off to Iraq to vindicate *Daddy* and his good name.
You know the old adage, you get what you pay for? Well, you get the government you elect too, and come November, no matter which one of the liberal Democrats running gets elected, it’s going to only get worse for America, it’s just a question of how much worse and how fast.
And as we continue to slip into the abyss that the radical Islamics are hoping we do, our money is worth less on foreign markets, we lose even more respect in the eyes of the world, our oil resources are dwindling, OPEC has us in a choke hold, the Dems still have their heads buried in their asses and refuse to open up drilling anywhere in the USA and America is rapidly falling from any kind of position of power.
McCain will be a continuation of the Bush debacle, Obama will be the death of America, and the Conservatives of this nation tried our very best to guide the American voters to REAL Conservative leadership.
As I said, we’ll have the government that we elect, and it’s killing us.

One thing you don’t want to loose sight about in Afghanistan is that the Soviets got their butts kicked there as they are formidable guerilla fighters.
Yes they were, and WE were supplying the Afghans with everything they needed to kick their asses…
Maybe a little *turn about is fair play* at work, you suppose??
It happened in Vietnam, the Soviets and China kept the NVA and VC well supplied…
the problem really is the electorate, Bush and Obama, and McCain are just symptoms of the sheer idiocy of the public at large. do any of these candidates, or any of the last several presidents deserve that office, the best and the brightest the US has to offer as “leaders”? nope.
The Brits and the Russkies both found that Afghanistan isn’t worth the blood of their troops. Had it been up to me I;d have never put BOTG in either Afghanistan or Iraq. I’d have bombed and missiled both of these pest-holes until there wasn’t one brick standing on another brick. I’d also have paid no attention to ‘collateral damage’. Remember nits make lice so kill’m young before they can become a problem.
Fred, I find your perspective on this interesting because when I’ve expressed the very same point of view (and one that was originally raised by Dr. Jeffrey Record in a paper titled “Bounding the Global War on Terrorism” written at the Army War College in Carlisle Pa.) that Afghanistan was an incomplete war and that Iraq was a diversion of resources.
Of course, I was branded a “liberal” for expressing those views.
But then, the communications from the White House erred by blending the GWOT with the War in Iraq.
Stormwarning, I got called a hell of a lot more than LIBERAL…
I have long felt that Iraq was a diversion, always have and always will, I know what info was given pre-Iraq and not all of it was bad Intel, the BAD Intel was the stuff Bush didn’t want to hear..
Well, to me, being a reformed Democrat and Liberal (I actually worked on Allard Lowenstein’s first run for the House), calling me a “librul” is a slap in the face. Beyond that, I find way too many people who know nothing about the facts who simply and blindly “follow the leader” without recognizing that Afghanistan was, and still is, a job unfinished. Whether it was “bad” Intel, or simply, Intel at the moment, that was then analyzed and interpreted to fit an agenda, is anyone’s guess. But the reality is that we cannot leave Iraq now, and certainly cannot leave it the way it is, and still have unfinished business in Afghanistan. Complicating the picture is Pakistan, and Somalia, and Algeria and a few other hotspots. That’s why, regardless of what you or anyone thinks of McCain, America cannont afford to have Obama win (even Hillary would have been better).
I’ll vote for you for President if I can be in your Cabinet (and I don’t mean the liquor cabinet - although I guess that depends on what you’ve got in there).
