House apologizes for slavery

July 29th, 2008 . by TexasFred

WASHINGTON - The House on Tuesday issued an unprecedented apology to black Americans for the wrongs committed against them and their ancestors who suffered under slavery and Jim Crow segregation laws.

“Today represents a milestone in our nation’s efforts to remedy the ills of our past,” said Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, D-Mich., chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus.

The resolution, passed by voice vote, was the work of Tennessee Democrat Steve Cohen, the only white lawmaker to represent a majority black district. Cohen faces a formidable black challenger in a primary face-off next week.

Congress has issued apologies before — to Japanese-Americans for their internment during World War II and to native Hawaiians for the overthrow of the Hawaiian kingdom in 1893. In 2005, the Senate apologized for failing to pass anti-lynching laws.

Five states have issued apologies for slavery, but past proposals in Congress have stalled, partly over concerns that an apology would lead to demands for reparations — payment for damages.

House apologizes for slavery

I say this in ALL sincerity, I hope ALL the recently freed slaves feel a lot better about their freedom now.

Wait, what?? An apology?? For slavery? For something that this nation had the good sense to abolished in 1863??

President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, as the nation approached its third year of bloody civil war. The proclamation declared “that all persons held as slaves” within the rebellious states “are, and henceforward shall be free.” SOURCE

I know there are some out there that are getting a *warm and fuzzy* from this one, but I, for one, see no reason, I mean NONE, that ANY apology should have been issued for something that this nation abolished 145 years ago.

I see no need to apologize for something that my ancestors may have done, it’s a hollow gesture at most, and likely will lead the empowerment crowd to go ahead and seek the reparations they feel they so richly deserve, for something they have NEVER known, only something they have read about.

This is a total waste of time and effort by our Congress, and only serves to show once again that we are not ruled by common sense, but by political correctness.

    You racist mudda you…LMAO

Typical of a liberal led congress:
    Unemployment
    Gas prices
    Economy
    Terrorism
    World conflict
    Crime
    Poverty
    Homeless people
    education

Don’t worry about any of those for GOD sake, We need to APOLOGIZE for slavery….Whew I feel better now.

An apology without merit is void.

And besides what does an apology do? Nothing.

Sheesh, what’s the point. Why was this needed? How has this helped us?

[sometimes I wish I were oblivious to stupid stuff]

I guess Jackson and Sharpton are rejoicing in the name of Black people?

    Leave me out.

    This is depressing.

I could go on for hours about the other problems facing us as a nation, and these jerkwads are apologizing for slavery?

Something that has not directly impacted nor affected anyone for the last 150 years or so?

    jeez.

Is there any semblance of personal responsibility left in this country, or is the populace just content with blaming all their problems on someone else?

    You said it all Fred!

They will never be completely free until they stop starting the name of organizations with the word “BLACK”.

They were freed in 1865 and have turned right around and enslaved themselves again.

TF there you go being a racist again. History is history, good or bad. What happened back then reflects on us today. Had slavery no happened, where would America be today?/ Think about that long and hard.

Damn TF, now you got me going. Why do we need to be so PC and appease everyone these days?? Slavery has been around human culture forever. We are what we are and that’s it. This country needs to go back to being the power that we once were and stop worrying about who we have offended!!! Get over it!!!!!!

Lets talk about the term African-American. What does that really mean. You are an American or you are not. Lets get back to American Pride!!
In the words of my favorite President Theodore Roosevelt

“There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all.”

brought to you by the very people who have little to say about the slavery, human trafficking, and genocide going on in the world today. and who do their damnedest to keep people dependent on entitlement programs, and thus keep them enslaved today.

I didn’t have anything to do with slavery, so those demanding reparations from me via my taxes paid can kiss my ass! go get a job, like I did.

    Here’s my take:
    1. The war ended - get over it and get on with life.
    2. We have been paying out the nose via entitlement programs for years.
    3. I called Congressman Mike Ross’ office this morning. I explained that the Stanfields lost their family farm when the North invaded and that the Stanfields and Taylors have yet to rebuild to pre-war status. I would like my farm subsidy check, thank you very much…..
    4. Maybe we can get the Southern White Farmer caucus to get the North to aplogize for invading our homes and burning our farms during the war.

All they are doing is opening the door for reparations! I’m with you Fred, etc….I do NOT apologize!

Cohen is the pork king for the Memphis area, murder capital of the country, and a major suck up. Good thing I can’t vote in his district!

Mark HIT it. The REAL slavery is that proliferated by the Left, insisting that blacks CANNOT do without their Government Binky. THERE’S the slavery.

Any Black person that refers to themselves as “African-American” please just ignore them. They are stuck on labels and follow the crowd. That is an assumption term and should be disregarded as ignorance.

Reparations is not what the majority of Black people want. It’s the select few who are drowning in the notion that we still have present day Black leaders and are following blindly.

I am American. I am Black. I am a female. etc etc etc.

    Really I’m just Latisha.

  15. comment number 15 by: Tish

I also forgot to comment on the response that Blacks have “enslaved themselves”.

I’d beg to differ. Too broad of a statement. That’s a blanket statement such as all White people are this or all Asian people are that…

I feel that even though no one can represent me but me, those that you are possibly speaking of, don’t even dot my radar, and is not typical of most Black Americans.

    Tish, exactly right!!

I used to work with a guy, one of the best friends I ever had, and he happened to be black…

One day we were at a luncheon and some PC old libber bat was carrying on about how it was so wonderful to see a black man and a white man teamed up as partners and how that was what America was all about…

Well, she looks right at my partner and asks him, “Do you prefer to be called black, negro, African-American? Just which do you prefer??”

To which he answered, “Well, I’ll tell ya, I prefer to be called Bruce.”

She got a funny look on her face and said, “Bruce?? I don’t understand…”

He said, “That’s my name, and unlike you, I don’t dwell on ridiculous labels…”

She got up and left the table and the luncheon… :P
