Navy to Modify Barracks Complex That Resembles a Swastika From Air

September 27th, 2007 . by TexasFred

CORONADO, Calif. — The Navy will spend as much as $600,000 to modify a 40-year-old barracks complex that resembles a swastika from the air, a gaffe that went largely unnoticed before satellite images became easily accessible on the Internet.

The Navy said officials noted the buildings’ shape after the groundbreaking in 1967 but decided against changing it at the time because it wasn’t obvious from the ground. Aerial photos made available on Google Earth in recent years have since revealed the buildings’ shape to a wide audience.

The Navy approved the money to change the walkways, landscaping and rooftop solar panels of the four L-shaped barracks, used by members of the Naval Construction Force at the Navy’s amphibious base at Coronado, near San Diego.

“We don’t want to be associated with something as symbolic and hateful as a swastika,” Scott Sutherland, deputy public affairs officer for Navy Region Southwest, told the Los Angeles Times.

You have got to be kidding me…

The ADL is complaining about this and the Navy is gonna cough up $600K to fix it so they don’t get their sensitive feelings hurt??

This was likely a mistake, and one not of OUR doing, the building has been standing since the 1960’s, but we have got to shuck out the bucks to fix it??

I have said it before and it bears saying again, PCness is going to be the death of the United States of America…

Maybe they’ll re-design it to look like a hand flipping the bird.

I made me a comment on this at Gunz blog site and I’m a hopin you’ll let me make one here, I know you are one of them ‘tolerant’ people that don’t like the word nigger and all but let’s see if you’ll let the truth be said.

Built in ‘67 and just now being bitched about? How fucking PC can we get? This is nothing more than some eggheaded builder having his head up his ass, and now we gotta spend more money to make some asshole Kraut hater happy? Screw the bastards, the building looks good as it stands, and it’s been there a long damn time, the damned Anti-Defamation League ain’t nothing but the NAACP for Jews anyway.

Yeah, I’ll let this comment in, this time, just so people can see you for what you are…

And in this particular case, I happen to loosely agree with you, why should WE have to spend the money to fix this?? After 40 years?? No one has been lynched or gassed over it, I fail to see it as a deliberate attempt at symbolism by anyone today, maybe during the time it was built but damn, we have to pay to fix it??

Yea, I’d have to agree somewhat with the closet racist myself, that’s pretty f-ked up and it took 40 years to fully acknowledge it could be offensive to someone? In particular Jews? I wonder how many Jewish American sailors it berthed over a span of 4 decades? Amazing, must not of hurt too bad, this article was the first I’d heard of it.

But on another note, there had to be quite a few hands in the designing, approving, inspecting and building process and no one threw in a flag and said it looks like a swastika? We better change course? LMAO.

    Conversation between Architect and planners:

P> “uh gee, Fritz … does this design kinda remind you of anything?”

F> “Vass? You don’t LIKE my design! Is perfectly GOOD design! My Uncle Adolph LOVED this design!”

P> “yeah, I know, Fritz, but see … some people might fight it … you know … a bit offensive, maybe?”

F> ” Vat people! People flying around in those things you stole from Dr. Von Hindenberg!”

P> “well … you know. Maybe in … who knows … 40 or 50 years … maybe people can see things from space or something. What will they think if they see that … uh … “shape” there?”

F> “I VILL NOT CHANGE DESIGN! IS GOOD DESIGN! YOU WILL APPROVE MY DESIGN, AND YOU VILL … LIKE … IT!”

    …or something.

I have one question. “Who gives a flying fuck at a rolling donut?” Fucking p/c bullshit over something that was built in 1967! (I wonder if Klaus Barbie was an architect. He worked for US Intel)

Has anyone perchance examined the shape of the building to see if, maybe, it was constructed in THAT fashion for the sake of route expediency, HVAC efficiency, and or SAVING A FEW DOLLARS?

    How STUPID are we?

    Don’t answer that.

Who cares what it looks like from the air. People can be so stupid.

Wow , couldn’t we just add some covered walkways with an equal roofline to each side and have a huge foursquare game pad. Really , couldn’t we figure a cheaper way to change the outline of this building.
Heck , just tear down one wing!!!!
